I have used empty soda pop bottles and milk jugs. Poke holes in the container you choose bury it in the ground close to the plants you want to water, leaving the top of the container above the ground. When you want to water just remove the top and put water in it replace the top and the water seeps out into the ground and waters the plants.

That's wonderful! These terracotta pots are working really well. I'll definitely bury some soda bottles now, too!

Oh I'm glad to hear it. I like them so far. I planned okra seeds in that pot so I hope it works out!

Wanted to add how envious I am of how cheap you got those! Mine are bigger but I paid way more for some used ones. I know you can make your own out of terracota pots but that's another project on the list for another day

I couldn't believe they were $5!! I've shopped for them before and I knew how expensive they could be.

Looks like a good idea. Please let us know what you think at the end of the season.

So far so good! It is working... I think at this point it would probably take 5-7 days to use all the water in the pot.

That looks like it would be a big help.

So far, so good! I'm happy with it - but it's just the beginning of June now. We haven't been hammered by the heat of summer yet. We'll see how it goes. :)

I've used ollas in some of my containers for the past several yrs & they work great! I'm in southern CA & the summer sun can be brutal. And, when it's hot out, I don't like to go out & be in the sun. My plants DEF suffered. I'm also a serial under-waterer... 😬 These have saved my tomatoes every year. I just go out every few days & water/fill up my ollas. I still top-water, then fill my olla to have maybe an extra day. Sometimes the olla drains in a day or two, depending on how big the plant is & how hot. HIGHLY recommend using these! Oh, & you can certainly use them in ground, too!

It’s pronounced OY-YUH, it’s Spanish. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how well they work 😊

Thank you! I'll make a follow up video soon and pronounce it correctly!

I'm really interested in more details. How much water does each pot hold? How many are you using in each raised bed (how far apart are you putting them)? What planting zone do you live in (for comparisons at the end of your season). Where did you get them? Littele's? Is that a grocery store or a home garden store? I'm wondering where i can find/order some
    Thanks for the information.😊😊😊
    Happy gardening 🎉

I think each one is about 32 oz. Probably holds a Big Gulp of water. This is the first time I'm using it and certainly won't be the only watering I rely on... I got 4 of them and 3 of them are basically in the center of large raised garden beds and one is in the middle of a large pot (probably a 16" square shown here in the video. They are working, in that the level of water does go down after a couple of days... I think it would take about a week -10 days to empty all the water... depending on how dry the soil and weather was, it might go faster than that. Lidl is the food store - similar to aldi - $5 per pot! I was so pleased. My local Lidl doesn't have any more of them. Good luck!

Ty Very Much for the information!
I, too, am going to try olla's. I only have Aldi's near me & I can not afford the 'originals', so I just bought some 8" terracotta pots w/ 10" saucers. There are videos on how to use them as olla's. As I'm in zone 6b (or now 7a) in PA, it's good to have feedback from people who are actually using. I hope to get mine in the ground this week or next.
