'The ending was different' now that's a total understatement if every there was one.

I've just finished this book and could barely put it down. It really does grip you in Robert's loneliness of being the last man on earth, and the horror, boredom, and pain of the past that come up throughout the novel. It is a simple read and quite emotional at times. Overall, great book.

This is my favorite book I read it the first time in the 70. At that time it was also printed as a cross media book for THE OMEGA MAN. Another film based loosely on the book. THE OMEGA MAN was running in theaters at the time I read the book and I turned in my book report with the movie title, because that was what was on the cover of the book. I AM LEGEND was written much smaller. I got my book report back with no grade. Mrs. Orrick (my teacher) told me that I didn't read the book and I just saw the movie. I told her the book was nothing like the movie and that I did read the book. She argued with me and again said I was getting a zero on the assignment. I went home that evening and wrote a book report on the movie. I took the new report into school and turned it in and told her "Here is a book report on the movie you can see by reading them that they are entirely different." I further said "now you can grade me on the book report or the movie report but you are going to give me a grade." I was sent to the office. Another teach Mrs. Greely was there in the office and heard what had happened, she said she would be glad to have me in her class, and a switch was made. She was a great teacher. She even let me and Jim my best friend use a school super 8 camera to do a class project together. Which just push my love for film making up a notch.

I am legend is probably my favorite book. Its about loneliness and that post apocalyptic boredom that happens when there is no one to hang out with and nothing to do.

The last page really cemented this for me as a classic. Really nicely tied up and I'm glad the concept was much more interesting with the book instead of the film. For me, I could care less about the change of his race/skin color for the film. I'm more concerned that the movie loses its edge that culminates to the "Legend."

I love this book, so dark and emotional and vampiric and yet not twilight. The character development is stunning and if the film followed the book it would have made for a very dark but promising movie not a totally different story. I gave the book 5/5 for its pure depth for such a short story.

I just finished it today for my Fiction of Horror class. I really enjoyed it too. It makes me kind of sad how different the movie is from the book is, because I would have really liked to have seen a faithful adaptation. Also the whole dog situation in the movie just rips my heart into a million pieces. I'm really glad I read the book after the movie or I wood have been mad for days. I loved the end of the book because it was so unexpected and exciting.

I read "I am Legend" several years back. I remember I enjoyed it quite a bit. Have you seen the 1964 Vincent Price version ("The Last Man on Earth")? I recommend it. It's very different from the most recent adaptation, but I found it to be just as thrilling.

i loooooved the book so much more than the movie, but both were amazing. i just felt a lot more desperation and sadness and isolation in the book and its definitely in my top ten favorite books of all time =)

I also had to read this for an apocalyptic fiction class and I thought it was great. I thought the most interesting part was at the end when you see the vampires as just trying to love and Robert becomes either bad or good in the eyes of the reader. The vampires just want to live, just as humanity tried. It's really no different than before and says a lot about our civilization. You should watch The Omega Man which was one of the first adaptations of I Am Legend.

When I read it and managed to get the image of Will Smith out of my head, Robert Neville ended up looking like Thor. Also I reckon the book and and film are far apart enough they should have called the film something different and mentioned it was influenced by the book.

Seen a lil of the comic book seems hell of more interesting how the vampire taught him instead of being mindless Zombies . Wonder why they left it out the movies .I think "the last man on earth" and "Omega Man","I am Omega". Might be all related to the book and comics .

I heard that Johnny Depp was supposed to play Neville's neighbor, which would have been awesome and totally have changed the infected people in the movie, and made the movie more faithful to the novella. I was pretty disappointed to find out that the movie was completely different, as was Omega Man, which was the first movie adaptation of this novella.

I read the book in 1991, while in college. It was an amazing read. The whole apocalyptic thing wasn't overdone at that time. The book was FAR, far better than the movie. I was so disappointed in this adaptation (none of the others were good, either).

I'm always hesitant to pick up a book that I've already seen the movie for. I'm a plot lover, always looking for the next twist so it just never seems worth it if I already know what's going to happen and why. But this looks interesting. Comparing the two, I mean. I think I'll be picking this up on my way home from work. Thank-you for always amazing review Saane!

  • @Chops-ul5rq

The reason that the movies ending is different from the book is because the director wanted the ending to be emotional which it was but the book ending is very depressing.

WHAT. I haven't seen the movie as of the dog and my emotional fragility, but I read the book and really liked it although I don't remember any short stories in the second half? Do you mean literal separated short stories? I had a different edition I wonder if it was composed differently. I enjoyed the (mildly predictable) book ending and I'm now intrigued as to how they changed it for the movie. I'm hoping the food was made from people. Eh. References.

I read this book back in 2007. I didn't do any prior research into it, other than maybe reading a brief summary on its product page. So I bought the book and really enjoyed it until the end. Then I absolutely hated it. Not because the story was bad or anything, but because of the short stories. I had no idea they were a majority of the book, let alone even in the book. It took me a few pages into the first one to realize. I'm still upset to this day. It's silly, I know.
