A beautiful bike. Seriously, one of the nicer European Dirt bikes. However, what happened at the end of that race is the reason Japanese Dirt bikes were worth their weight in gold. The Japanese were light years ahead of everyone when it came to quality control. My CR125 and CR250 never broke down. In 2.5 years of riding I replaced one set of front brakes and one piston and rings.
Man that sucks I saw your front end jumping all over the place, I have the same bike and break spokes all the time , I’m sending my hubs to Buchanan and getting new rims and spokes, good luck
So much power untapped, but an excellent display of riding skill! Great & fast riding. The bike sounded perfect! I’ve an ‘88 KX500, but nowhere near the riding skill (anymore)…did when younger though! Still ride a good bit, but have to protect the body & family income😄great video though, very nice.
The Maico had some kind of handling edge. To this day I've never actually heard a satisfactory explanation of the Maico handling advantage. Some say it was because it had a primary chain drive and the engine turned in the opposite direction, making the engine torque the front end down exiting turns. Guys who have ridden many brands of bikes probably know what was going on. Did the Maico designers figure something out? They could have built a gear driven primary, but they didn't. And i give them credit the early Maico fork and triple clamp design was better, but essentially everyone copied that and it still didn't explain the difference. The pipe of the early bikes went under the engine, allowing the seat to be set lower in the frame?
...just happened to watch this today - and I have never seen anyone start from behind the other riders before... That was cool!... Is that even "legal" to start that far back like that?
Husky better. Come off it mate. The old CRs would out pull all. Iv ridden Maicos and they all vibrate like nothing else. Bits fall off em all the time and they hammer the rider to the point they cant finish a long race. The Hondas were a lot smoother in their power delivery. The Maicos might’ve been more powerful all up but they were plain hard work to ride and ya had to rev em all the time. The Hondas gave you power when ya wanted it right from down low thrru to the top end grunt. Unless ya 150% fit two laps would be like ten laps on a Honda. My. 480 doesnt vibrate one bit except at idle. Maicos always felt like the engine mount bolts were loose and the fin ring added to the problem. They used to vibrate to the point that bits would break and fall off. Been there done that. I still love Maicos though, probly more for their name and status. If ya owned a Maico back fhen and even now, you were super duper hot shit. This is a beautiful resto Maico, a credit to its owner. He did well to last that long and round em up like he did. Sorry but yep, Maico break-o is a real thing.

What an amazing ride, just found this clip, gutter you had bike troubles as you were carving through the field, I used to love watching motocross in the 80s and the maicos always looked and sounded awesome, 👌
SOMEONE NEEDS A BETTER CAMERA OR AT LEAST IMAGE STABILIZATION POST PRODUCTION, I ALMOST GOT DIZZY WATCHING THOSE VIOLENT OSCILLATIONS.. IT LOOKS SOO MUCH COOLER WITH THE SMOOTH VIDEO WITH THE RIDER BOUNCING AROUND BUT HORIZON STAYS PERFECTLY STEADY
I bought a KX 500 brand new in1987, Love the old 2 Smokes..nice riding..
this inspires me to finish resto on my 1981 465YZ

That's a very interesting comment. Sad to say I know shit about the maico but makes me wonder. Did you ever find anything out?

Time for a Talon hub & 8-guage spoke upgrade? 🤔
Not to mention a diet, which would help
