Josh believes that empirical evidence is the only true value in public discussion? What a narrow-minded approach to debate. Also, what gives with his last implication? “The difference between Hugh Freeze and some of the other coaches is that you know about the stuff in Hugh Freeze’ past. That’s the *only* difference.” And he based it on some intel he has personally. Does Josh have info regarding other coaches and them attempting to hush sexual assault victims? Has he turned that over to authorities?
@@reaganlecroy7773 Assuming every coach is immediately as bad as Sandusky is a bitter, cynical way of going through life. I don't put people on pedestals nor do I believe that college football coaches are inherently good human beings, but I'm not going to immediately jump to the worst possible conclusions, either. Buth with Hugh? Yeah, I'll jump to those conclusions.
Josh I think you’re reducing the role of a head coach as a win at all costs, and that’s all that matters. If that’s your stance, then fine, this probably doesn’t bother you all that much. But for me, I want someone who is the face of my football program, leading men, to be a little bit better. And no it’s not too much to ask that coaches of all stripes be held to a higher moral standard
Auburn fans are bad upset about Freeze being hired but perfectly fine getting that Tim Cook money while he helps the Chinese Communist Party stomp out the protesters...but nobody wants to have that conversation...
@@billmcgill8583 he's been teeing this up for awhile, saying, "I don't think this would be a bad hire." What people need to understand about these folks is they benefit from sucking up to the most powerful figures in sports. They'd lose access otherwise. I don't begrudge them that. But when you have to overlook some very serious moral lapses - and I'm not talking about the booty calls to sex workers here - to justify your hot takes, well, I lose a little respect for what you have to say.
How do you know he’s not? He’s been there now. He knows what messing up can cost you. Many good leaders have fell and got back up. He may be just the person to lead vulnerable young men now. If not i can assure you he’s on a short leash.
Poor Hugh Freeze. What a price he paid. Only making 5 million a year at Liberty. How tough that must’ve been for him. It’s a disgusting look for the sport. For those who preach the Auburn creed, the hypocrisy should be a bit hard to swallow. But hey, he’ll probably win games. Does anything else really matter?
Two points from me: 1. He did not own up to it in that press conference, he merely said that our lives wouldn't be comfortable if ours were broadcast like his. That's not owning up to mistakes, that's defending his actions. 2. Why is no one talking about the hiring process here as far as the boosts are concerned? Less than 1 year ago, we have booster's fabricating a cheating scandal on Harsin while he's out of the country because they want him out, but now we're hiring someone with real public infidelity issues? The boosters are real losers, but no one cares because Harsin is out. And, unfortunately, I agree with you, wins will wipe the slate clean very quickly. As far as punishment is concerned, a couple years at Liberty making millions is not a punishment. It's just not.
@@jackblanton8184 How's he owned up to it? Coaching at a smaller school and still making millions? Or is it the way he projects his flaws on everyone else? "I own up to my problems, but you'd have the same issues if you were in my position." That's not owning up, that's projection.
@@chrism7574 That is not a real quote. Dude, listen to any of interview of his for the last 6 years. Also, he doesn't owe you an apology for Ole Miss truthfully. He owed his family an apology. And they are still with him
@@jackblanton8184 It's a more flattering quote than what he actually said. I have no desire to listen to the press conference again to hear the real quote. And about the calls to hookers, maybe the family is all he needs to apologize to, as well as the entire Ole Miss fan base for the embarrassment he caused. But he'd need to issue a real apology to a lot more people about his behavior surrounding rape victims. He's shown a pattern of behavior that should disqualify him from any public position, especially an Auburn job where the previous head coach was criticized for a publicly fabricated cheating scandal.
As someone with a degree (about to be two) from Auburn, I’m incredibly frustrated by the hire. At the end of the day, football is a money maker for the university, so I absolutely know why he was brought in (and to his credit, we’ll be a better football team), but also the “front porch” as well. It’s embarrassing having to be represented by someone like him. As for the “you wouldn’t want your mistakes presented in this way”, sure I wouldn’t but I feel incredibly good about myself compared to what he has out there.
Josh, only thing that rubs me the wrong way is that many of us have had to grow up and live with people close to us that have talked (read: posted on social media) constantly about the “Auburn Creed” and suggested with a straight face that their school is different- when in reality they have Bruce Perl and Hugh Freeze as their two highest profile coaches. AU cares about Ws and Ls and places a high premium on them (just like the other 13 SEC schools). It is just gonna really fire people up when the whole “Auburn Man” and “Creed” posts start popping up in 2-3 years.
So Auburn Men cannot make mistakes? I think we all have made mistakes that we would like forgiven. To bring Bruce Pearl into this is absurd as well. Bruce is well documented as being a strong Christian to folks who are around Auburn. You are probably a UAT fan that likes to just hate on Auburn.
@@baileyhix2716 Most people don’t make the kind of “mistakes” Hugh Freeze makes. And anyone can put on the performance of being a good Christian. It doesn’t take much, just go to church, say you’re god-fearing, pay lip service and simpletons eat it up.
@@parker-unfired best comment I've seen on this topic. Well, one of at least. I'd add "and Auburn / Opelika is ate up with simpletons"! Which is exactly why AU made this terrible decision.
I disagree with the overall point that people talking against him will disappear after a ten win season, maybe the Auburn pundits. However I feel like either your giving no credence to some of the other accusations that have come out against him, or you lump them in with the burner phone incident. Its not like this guy is Pruitt where he was slinging dough when it wasn't kosher to be paying players, if this guy wasn't good at being a football coach theirs a none zero chance he could be in jail or heading to it.
@@briancornelius4967 Their are a couple accusations coming out that border on abuse. Asking a girl to take her shirt off while he was in the room, (This was in his teaching years). Paddling female student/students. More recently he is being accused of DMing a student at Liberty to not come forward with abuse accusations towards one of his players.
@Christian Reiling At the risk of sounding like a blind Hugh Freeze defender (the man obviously has a pattern of horrendous decision making), the DM thing was a terrible misstep, but those DMs are now public information, and no where in those messages is there any attempt to coerce this woman not to come forward with abuse allegations. You can find them pretty easily online. This was a former student of Liberty who was later revealed to be one of several Jane Does who had recently settled a class action Title IX suit against the university, with accusations dating back through the last 22 years. This woman was upset at the hiring of Ian McCaw due to his history of sexual assault scandal cover ups at Baylor (a perfectly valid criticism btw). Freeze attempts to defend his boss (neither of them were at Liberty while this former student attended). While being an extremely dumb move on his part to respond on such a highly sensitive topic, he didn't really have any way of knowing that this woman had recently settled litigation against the university.
So….briarcrest doesn’t matter? Hiring hookers for underage kids doesn’t matter? Going after sexual assault victims doesn’t matter? The dude is a red flag walking. Punishment? He’s made millions and is continuing to make millions. A 2 year vacation where he’s STILL basically saying it’s not his fault isn’t s good sign? Bobby Petrino isn’t a major coach for this reason… Josh, this take is so bad that it’s unthinkable. This was basically a defense of freeze. The message is “winning trumps all” and that logic is how you get Art Briles and Baylor, or Joe Paterno and PSU…. I honestly can’t watch other segments knowing this is the mentality here, that’s doing all he’s done is ok, because he’s won football games…he can go coach a division 3 school if he wants to be a coach so bad.
Nah, bad takes here. His friends are right. You say "he's paid his price." How? In July 2022, he DMd a sexual assault victim who had a lawsuit against Liberty. This type of justification is a slippery slope fallacy that allows bad behavior to continue, and with each occurrence, gets worse until there's a much larger problem. To excuse it because it's college football, would be a grave mistake. It's not just football. We are molding impressionable young men into future adult leaders, so who Auburn chooses to lead these young men matters. But, I guess it's okay with you, Josh, to sacrifice our mothers, daughters and sisters in order to excuse and justify known bad behavior. It's college football after all, right? What is heart-breaking and concerning is that Auburn has a very serious issue with sexual harassment on campus that university leadership is not addressing....and the football program still made this decision. But hey, it's college football, so who cares? This is a bad look for Auburn. If you are a man and you overlook, justify, or excuse this hiring decision, shame on you. What if it was your daughter, mother or sister that was sexually harassed by Hugh Freeze? Would you still think..."oh he paid his dues, it's okay?" No. This is not okay.
Josh casually omitting that Hugh lied to recruits and players on the team about the NCAA investigation so they couldn’t leave or transfer. Freeze is just not a good enough coach to overcome the poor character. My personal opinion of him is that he is a religious charlatan like Jimmy Swaggart or someone of that nature. He invokes religion to manipulate. But that aside, I just don't think he is a good enough coach for Auburn to risk its reputation and divide the fan base while they're doing it. The hire was meh. No one else was beating down Freeze's door like Auburn. That tells me something.
I like watching Josh Pate but I was very disappointed with his take on this situation. I'm not one to judge if someone should "suffer" or continue to be punished for past sins. With that said, Josh mentioned that Freeze coached at Liberty, insinuating it was punishment to coach at a lower tier school. Liberty just gave Freeze an extension through 2030 worth $40 million dollars. In what universe is that suffering and paying a price??? I'm not saying Freeze should be living on the streets, but that's no where near suffering. You can drag my name through the mud for that kind of money. Freeze can be forgiven for his sins and move past them overtime; however, he's shown a pattern of some bad decision making. If you disagree with that, then let's just say he's put himself in some sketchy situations repeatedly to the point that it's perceived he makes lots of bad decisions. What kind of bad decisions does he make with regard to running a multi-million dollar football program? I'm still floored that Auburn would hire him. I'm also a little surprised he would leave Liberty with a crazy contract of $40M and he doesn't have to have all his baggage dragged out into the public forum again.
He’s won 10 games once at Ole Miss. but because he beat Saban people act like he’s an amazing coach. For his career at Ole Miss he had a 61% win percentage. And a 48% win percentage in SEC conference games.
I’ve been saying this too. If beating a single team twice merits a good coach, then Gus was a legend lol. .475 winning percentage BEFORE the vacated wins.

The problem with hiring Hugh Freeze is he’s made questionable decisions at his last two jobs. If something like what happened at Liberty happens at Auburn it will be a much much bigger story. Auburn is taking a huge risk by hiring Hugh Freeze, it’s a risk they didn’t need to take. There are other good coaches who can win at Auburn.

Should he be dead and buried, no, but he definitely should not be in charge of molding and mentoring young men.
I think Cadillac will bridge the gap between the players and Freeze. Cadillac comes across as a moral guy and I don't think he will be afraid to speak out.
The only reason this guy is relevant in the coaching world is his two victories against Alabama (which I would argue were lucky, had less to do with coaching and more to do with the oblong shape of footballs - first was early in the season breaking in a new Kiffin offense with Blake Sims at QB, 23-17 in Oxford, second was a really flukey game that Cooper Bateman started in). He went 19-21 against SEC opponents including multiple losses to Vandy and a loss to Memphis in his only season with double digit wins at Ole Miss. He had one 10-win season at Liberty. I hear they didn't even call Dan Lanning. I would've rather taken a chance with Cadillac or Prime if Dan turned it down. I simply don't think he was the best available and the baggage isn't worth it. The irony of the reasons behind the attempted Harsin coup makes it even worse. I'm not even an Auburn fan. I did my entire bachelor's degree at UA... but I do have family and friends that are Auburn grads that are serious about the Creed. I've got significant secondhand embarrassment. I know you say winning heals all but this isn't the way.
What confuses me is that he's the best they could do. He's good at coaching but there are plenty of equally good coaches out there with clean pasts that you wouldn't even have to have this conversation about, and you know Auburn can afford pretty much whoever they want. I mean Matt Rhule went to a much worse-off team than Auburn and he's clearly a very capable coach, I don't think Wisconsin is a better job than Auburn if they had gone after Fickell, and so on. It's possible no one else wanted the job, but I'd be surprised. It's not necessarily that I'm anti-Freeze (ha ha), I'm just surprised Auburn would be willing to let this conversation get all over the news. Agree with it or not it was a predictable outcome, and I can't imagine it's helpful for recruiting or sponsorships and I'm just not sure his on-field performance is clearly above other alternatives enough to make it worth that risk. I guess the Auburn admins disagree, and that's their call to make ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
You are ignoring fit. it is not just the product on field. Fickell is a midwest guy, and Rhule is a big 10/big 12 guy he played at penn state, and coached well at Temple before rebuilding a bad Baylor program. Bryan Harsin was really good at Boise State, with 5 conference title game appearances, 3 conference titles and very strong record (69-19). all his Auburn tenure tells us is that he's more of a west coast guy. Sure Brian Kelly made it work at LSU, but I think he's proving he can coach in the SEC. Hugh Freeze proved that he can build a strong program without a strong brand twice, and one was in the SEC. so he's likely best choice on-field, and with Lane Kiffin staying put... who else do you got? Deion Sanders? who has yet to coach outside the FCS level? This isn't like pro sports where the coach doesn't have to fit the city or region.
Josh, I believe you are one of the best Podcaster on you tube. This is a forgiving country. He has paid for his mistakes. Only God and Hugh knows what he has done. Let him and God sort it 📤out.
my 2 cents worth, I think the powers that be at AU want someone beholding to them, so a good coach with some baggage is more tasteful to them than a Better coach that has some measure of autonomy. He runs a similar offense to Gus not the same, Gus was not as good of a recruiter and he obviously could not develop players like Freeze does. Gus road freezes cost tails to a head coaching position, it’s not a fair comparison at all.
I think that is a hip on the train comment. It's more like the good things Gus did, but the man has coaching sense. He will know how to pick up a third and 1 and not throw a 20 yard pass, he will know how to power his way to two or three yards when necessary, he will make in game decisions like a chess player rather than give up and kick a field goal from the three yard line. Gus was great at giving up games he should've won, Freeze is great at winning games he isn't supposed to. He is more like Tuberville with a better offense than Gus.
People’s take on his “situation” at Liberty is far from the truth. The facts are below: - in no way was Hugh Freeze involved in ANY accusation of covering up SA victims at Liberty - the lady that posted the screen shots off Hugh’s DMs has tagged him over 40 times in comments on her social media despite the fact that he had nothing to do with her claims. - Hugh’s first DM to the girl was an invitation to hear her out - Hugh’s second DM was a defense of the AD at Liberty because of the nonstop posts where he was tagged. Should he have dm’d the student, no, but there isn’t any validity to this being a concern. This accusation is an absolute nothing burger.
Something vvery important that you have left out is Cdillac Williams. He has been hired as the assistant head coach and running backs coach. @Chuck Northington I was against it but for some damn reason he thinks Alabama is 2nd chance U for coaches! Now he is stuck with 2 coaches that nobody wants!
The problem I have with this is the the SEC basically told Saban "You can't hire Freeze as your OC". Now that Auburn has hired him as their head coach, Saban needs to hire Jeremy Pruitt as DC and tell the NCAA and SEC to go pound sand.
I have watched you for a while and respect your view. I think I fall into your camp 2. I think there is a path of redemption, but it involves amends, and by amends I mean working towards offsetting the harm he has caused. That means becoming involved in working towards safer college campuses. Creating transparency and accountability around sexual assault and violence on college campuses. Lending his status and position of power to the organizations that having been advocating this work. This is a great point. If he improves the situation at the school and shows a real effort and care towards making the campus safer and more transparent, I think he will win a lot of people over. I would just be very surprised if that actually happens.

Love JP and his analysis and unfortunately he's spot on. I love the football hire but hiring Hugh Freeze is the equivalent of hiring Harvey Weinstein because he directs great movies. The AD and Auburn needed to look in the mirror and determine what he stands for. We got our answer.
I appreciate you sticking firm with your opinion, Josh. Not enough individual thought being encouraged these days. As I've always heard: "here's what it is, and that over there is how you feel about it. Don't get the two confused"
I’m in the camp of he checked the boxes. SEC HC experience . Qb developer. Great recruiter. Most importantly could start before Dec 5th. I’ve had no issue with the hire.
Which is why I'm pretty much done with college football. The hypocrisy is just piled too high and deep. Like some magic man in the sky gives a flip about a football game. Spare me.
I think this is spot on. It's interesting that people have beef with Freeze but the didn't with Kiffin? Houston Nut is slimy, got Arkansas on probation and then turned around and got Ole Miss on probation. Freeze stepped into a bad situation at Ole Miss and very likely just went along with what was already going on at the hands of Houston Nut. The phones and all that were in the athletic department and not his. I'm sure he knew it was going on and I'm sure it preceded him and he probably couldn't say any about it at the risk of his job, doesn't mean it was right, he just got into a bad situation. He paid his dues, he got fired, he got a show clause, Ole Miss got probation mostly because of Nut. He was out of coaching, had to getba second chance at a small school. Wasn't given the chance he proved that he could win the right way and he has proven his character along the way. Lastly, there are all these moral high ground people that jump on a movement for the sake of having a movement, so, I have no problem with him jumping on social media to defend his friend who was also dupped by slimy Nut.
Freeze commited the violations. Nowhere in any of NOA by NCAA does it mention Nutt. Nutt had to sue Freeze and Ole Miss for defamation. Which they settled
Ole Miss is really good at making bad decisions. Having to apologize and settle with Houston Nutt for the fake stories etc. allegedly since I don't know the details. Then Aubuirn says hold my beer! lolololololol
Plain and simple, the list of things Hugh Freeze has done and the things he failed to take responsibility for, regardless of how you've shamefully chosen to frame it, should preclude him from getting this job. It's unfortunately not the reality that schools are going to avoid hiring a guy with his past if they think they can win with him, but that doesn't mean you have to defend him. I've liked listening to your show up to this point, even when we disagree, but I'm calling it here and turning off recommendations from you.
Same. This crossed a line with basic decently. The Briarcrest stuff is questionable enough, not to mention the other stuff. This whole take was basically a defense of Freeze and why he deserves a chance. He can go coach division 3 if he wants to coach so bad
I agree with you on this. I’ve never been a fan of Freeze (Before his stuff came out), but I also think he’s served his time. The punishment has to fit the crime. He has done nothing to merit never coaching in the SEC again. This is America…… land of second chances.
He literally said nothing but sticking up for his boss it wasn't anything out of the way...people need to get over it if is was you you would do the same thing
There is another camp Josh and that is the camp that believes that not only given his past but very recent past he seems to not have the restraint to avoid controversy and that controvery could damage the Auburn program. Some of us also believe that there were better candidates out there for the HC vacancy. Like it or not, and you should know this better than most, recruting in the SEC is a cuthroat business and some of us believe that Freeze will be at a disadvantage because of his past. NIL will help but that would help any coach. I have been verbally attacked for stating my opinion as well so don't feel as if you are alone in that regard. Many of us that were opposed to this hire are simply looking at it from the perspective of hiring a CEO for a multimillion dollar program that supports every other sports program so yes, hell yes we wanted the best coach available and some of us don't think it was Hugh Freeze. It's a shame that you don't think our opinion is important. Hugh Freeze has paid the price for his transgressions so that is not the issue. I am 100% behind Hugh Freeze and want him to succeed, that doesn't mean my reservation about his hire weren't founded. Believe me, I want to proven wrong on this and if Hugh Freeze proves that I will raise a glass to him.
Serious question, who is available, that wanted the job, that is a better fit for Auburn that doesn't already make 10 mil/yr? I wanted Deion or Rhule, but neither seemed to want the job here.
No he has not. He and Ole Miss defamed the former coach before him. Sued and settled. Freeze and Ole Miss lied to the players and their families. A lawyer had to get involved so players could transfer out. Dozen or more times called an escort service and lied about it. It is a huge risk hire
Freeze is a great fit… more so than Kiffin would be. Awesome family he has. He’s gonna be fine at AU. Bruce Pearl sure loves him. If people want to hate us for us then hate us. You ain’t us… he paid his dues. He didn’t even get a show clause like Pearl did.
Auburn done hired them a snake. Don't give this man an extension he will leave you soon after. Any coach that signs a extension and leaves soon after is an evil snake.
Hugh freeze has never been accused of sexual assault… or at least not publicly. When he was a high school coach he paddled a female student and one changed shirts in front of him but they both stated there was no sexual advance or anything sexual to it. He was not accursed of sexual assault at Liberty.
And how did he do that? From everything I’ve read the cases were reported to the school not Freeze and at least one of them came a year after it was supposed to of happened. I’m not saying the players are innocent but no one has accused him of covering anything up. Your def one of the people in camp 1 who probably doesn’t have a clue what’s going on.
Just something to say about a man who signs a big extension, says he’s never leaving and then 2 months later he’s gone…auburn done hired another one 😂😂
That deal was essentially a bonus for Liberty. Kiffin did it at FAU, Napier at UL, etc. It’s a way to increase the buy-out so when the coach leaves the school the football program can get a new locker room. It’s becoming more common for the G5 level schools who know ultimately their coach will take a bigger job in the near future.
Very disappointed at my Alma Matter as a SA victim ik want it feels like not to be listened to and the feeling of being slapped in the face by a program u thought and believed was different. Whole lot of moral gymnastics on display here.
Two points from me:

Great comment
What is Hugh freeze was black? Wonder how long it would take him to recover and pay price for checkered pass?
Josh I don't think the comparison to Brian Kelly holds a lot of water, Kelly had been to the playoffs and a string of 10 win seasons, I just don't see Freeze reaching that level. (disclaimer Life long Alabama resident and Crimson Tide fan, I want Auburn to get better, so when the undefeated tigers reach the Iron Bowl and get crushed I can hear the wails of anguish from Huntsville to Mobile)

Auburn is about to enter some really good times because Freeze understands this is his last chance and he's not going to waste it. Plus he has accountability with his family being so close and having Cadillac by his side. Roll Tide!!!

You omitted camp #4, us who feel like this a Gus 2.0 hire. Runs the same offense as Gus & Gus beat Bama 3 times.
However, I’m willing to keep an open mind and give Freeze a chance. WDE!!!
Ole miss is an inferior program, he'll have more money and support at Auburn. Ideally, he'll beat Bama even more.
He runs a similar offense to Gus not the same, Gus was not as good of a recruiter and he obviously could not develop players like Freeze does. Gus road freezes cost tails to a head coaching position, it’s not a fair comparison at all.
f. Gustavo
The facts are below:
- in no way was Hugh Freeze involved in ANY accusation of covering up SA victims at Liberty
- the lady that posted the screen shots off Hugh’s DMs has tagged him over 40 times in comments on her social media despite the fact that he had nothing to do with her claims.
- Hugh’s first DM to the girl was an invitation to hear her out
- Hugh’s second DM was a defense of the AD at Liberty because of the nonstop posts where he was tagged.
Should he have dm’d the student, no, but there isn’t any validity to this being a concern.
This accusation is an absolute nothing burger.
yeah idk why people act like he did the assaulting, goes with the narrative i guess
Something vvery important that you have left out is Cdillac Williams. He has been hired as the assistant head coach and running backs coach. His message has been very similar to what Coach Freeze has been saying. Did Auburn put a burner phone in Freeze's contract?? Thats all I wanna know.....
No.
Josh says, "People who live in glass houses, should not throw stones." Confucius says, "People who live in glass houses, should take shower in basement." In all seriousness, Freeze may do well eventually with the $ and talent AU can bring ... but my humble opinion is, he'll be another Bobby Petrino and Ed Orgeron. Coaches who's stars aligned enough for some success but were eventually forced out due to moral issues. I've said in the past that whom ever was responsible for Jimbozo's ridiculous contract should be checked for a previous lobotomy ... I hope the powers at AU learned from that debacle. ^v^

He caused harm inserting himself into that situation, and his path towards healing involves working in that same space.
This is a great point. If he improves the situation at the school and shows a real effort and care towards making the campus safer and more transparent, I think he will win a lot of people over. I would just be very surprised if that actually happens.

Believe me, I want to proven wrong on this and if Hugh Freeze proves that I will raise a glass to him.

Sounds a lot like Napier's speech before he left Louisiana for Florida. Integrity is dead.
That deal was essentially a bonus for Liberty. Kiffin did it at FAU, Napier at UL, etc. It’s a way to increase the buy-out so when the coach leaves the school the football program can get a new locker room.
