My Daddy told me before he passed..."I'll meet you there...at that river. I'll be waiting for you." He, my Mom and I were ALL baptized by the same preacher, in the same place, in a country lake, over a period of 25 years, as the same church family sang this song. When I hear it, I see that water...and I know Daddy's waiting just across on the other side. Lord, come quickly.

The exact same thing happened with me with my mom at 95 . I would sing hymns to her and she would smile. She died 3 months ago. Oh I miss her

My best friend died a year and a half ago. He was only 45. We were die-hard Rams fans. He was a devout Christian and I'm a secular Jew. But I have always have loved this song and I sing it for Joe before I go to sleep once a week. Rams are back in Los Angeles, Joe. He passed on just 2 days before the official announcement by the NFL. But Joe is resting in peace and I remain good friends with his son, dad, and his sister. Yes, Joe, May the saints gather at the river.

My brother in JESUS OUR LORD AND KING, past away (went Home) we had no internet so I sang this to him as best I could He could not talk, He wrote on his board that he and I would meet at the river. 3 hrs later he passed. The writer of this song during the Civil war in 1865, said he "wanted to write about the river of life, as so many songs had been witten about the river of death" Wow what blessed words..Praise Christ and his blessed name forever.

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. This is to all denominations: If Revelation 22:1-7 is your Scripture of the Day, this is a good hymn to compliment it. BTW, I saw The Gaithers in March 2004 at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, SC.
Every time I listen and sing this song, I am always reminded of how limited our human understanding is as to the beauty of our true home in heaven.

I lost my dad May 1989. I was with him in the hospital day and night in the hospital where he gave his life to and died. At his death two angels came and took him away. My mum too, while passing away January 2011, in bed opened her eyes and said to our cousin,, "I have seen the Glory", waved at her and shot her eyes 'Shall we gather at the river???

Ditto for me as I played it at a local Lutheran Chuch that I filled in at as the Opening Hymn. It is #423 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. And let us give thanks to the ones who have gone before us.
