    RENT. You really can't leave out rent. It's the biggest expense especially in a place like NYC. In my experience, you can get a very cheap place, but it can then be a place that's hard to live in. I rented a bed in a living room in a major city in the US, and it was hard to have no privacy. Also, that was still $200 a month. I can definitely see how spending that little on shampoo/food is attainable. But not if you add rent.

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  3 роки тому

      I didn't pay any rent. As I almost never pay for accommodation when I travel. Find something helpful that you can offer to people who can host you and...that's really the trick. I stayed at friends during these months.

      @@WhatashameMaryJane I was going to hop on to say I then watched "How to save money on a trip" after this, where you mention apartment swaps and work for lodging, both of which I was not aware of but sound like great ideas, as well as that couchsurfing has been clutch for you.
      I've been loosely thinking about traveling to new cities for roughly a month, and this is super helpful advice, so thank you!

    I blow through $21 in transportation in a week and $160 in clothes in ONE shopping trip. I find it rather amazing that you managed to only spend that in 4 months, well you already know how I just spend money like it's going out of style but I always make it back up so I never worry too much about it.

    I just realised for the first flight I paid 200 EUROS and not dollars as I counted in this video, so it would be 220 USD. Which doesn't change the total significantly after all, but I just wanted to be precise till the end.

    Excuse me. I have lived in 7 places in 7 years. My children always reminds me of this. I have always stayed at a 4.5 star apartment complex. I furnish my apartment with furniture I got at a consignment store, an estate sale , or furniture auction. That way when I leave I can give the furniture away or sale it on consignment and not feel like I am wasting money.

    Hi Mary Jane not sure if you will see this, I just want to know where did you live in NYC. I traveled from Toronto, Ontario, Canada with the greyhound that took about 11 hours to get to NYC for under $80.00 return and I had stayed at a Hostel in Manhattan, Queen's and New Jersey. I also slept over at the Port Authority on 8th Ave. to save money.

That’s what really set you apart from other travel youtubers. But it seems that’s not the case, and you’d like to keep those “loopholes” to yourself. @@WhatashameMaryJane hun I don't think you should allow anybody to bully you into disclosing everything, you have given wonderful wonderful tips. Some people have non-disclosure agreements which means you're not allowed to share that kind of information with others. That might be something that you set up for your members if you set up a patreon you know you give them the inside track on specific links but you have to clear that with the people that you work with. I find people to be very very very obnoxious about trying to get what they want to get. I feel they should just respect the fact that you came on here and you really shared your life with us. I don't see the point to live an entire Life on budget... We were made to be Happy And live a Great Life ..doing the best we can. Even if I can appreciate this way of travel on the Road which I belive is exaiting and interesting I really do not see the point to make tons of video to make experience on budget.. this seems to be a Non Life.. as if you can choose the man or women of your Life on a base of less expensive One.. you have to chose the One who was made for You.. the One who make you happy.strange approach. You have to do what you really want ..not what It cost the least.. Sorry Just my point of view.

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  4 роки тому

      Ciao Giacomo. First of all we need to make a distinction between living on a budget and making videos about living on a budget, which certainly is not the same thing. As for the second, I believe the purpose is pretty obvious: be useful to people who are interested in learning certain skills.
      About why to live on a budget, I understand your point. You seem to me to have a perspective of a person who grew up in shortage of wealth, or in any case in a different situation of mine. I was lucky enough to never experience poverty as I come from an average wealthy Italian family, who has never had to face real problems with shortage of money. To me the only problem to face is the opposite, which means the consequences of the exaggerated abundance of wealth that the Western world has nowadays. My choice of living a frugal life comes from this standpoint.
