RENT. You really can't leave out rent. It's the biggest expense especially in a place like NYC. In my experience, you can get a very cheap place, but it can then be a place that's hard to live in. I rented a bed in a living room in a major city in the US, and it was hard to have no privacy. Also, that was still $200 a month. I can definitely see how spending that little on shampoo/food is attainable. But not if you add rent.
I didn't pay any rent. As I almost never pay for accommodation when I travel. Find something helpful that you can offer to people who can host you and...that's really the trick. I stayed at friends during these months.
@@WhatashameMaryJane I was going to hop on to say I then watched "How to save money on a trip" after this, where you mention apartment swaps and work for lodging, both of which I was not aware of but sound like great ideas, as well as that couchsurfing has been clutch for you. I blow through $21 in transportation in a week and $160 in clothes in ONE shopping trip. I find it rather amazing that you managed to only spend that in 4 months, well you already know how I just spend money like it's going out of style but I always make it back up so I never worry too much about it. $1986, Intriguing number, I was born in 1986. Yeah I know I'm old AF, give me a break. 🤣
I just realised for the first flight I paid 200 EUROS and not dollars as I counted in this video, so it would be 220 USD. Which doesn't change the total significantly after all, but I just wanted to be precise till the end.
Excuse me. I have lived in 7 places in 7 years. My children always reminds me of this. I have always stayed at a 4.5 star apartment complex. I furnish my apartment with furniture I got at a consignment store, an estate sale , or furniture auction. That way when I leave I can give the furniture away or sale it on consignment and not feel like I am wasting money.
Hi Mary Jane not sure if you will see this, I just want to know where did you live in NYC. I traveled from Toronto, Ontario, Canada with the greyhound that took about 11 hours to get to NYC for under $80.00 return and I had stayed at a Hostel in Manhattan, Queen's and New Jersey. I also slept over at the Port Authority on 8th Ave. to save money.
How did you find free accommodation. I know you already have a video on it, but specifically for this NY trip where did you stay? I love your videos cause you share so much with us! But on this topic you are quite vague
Oh well that’s a shame you don’t want to share that with your viewers and subscribers who are supporting your videos. As a subscriber I valued your honesty and willingness to share! Ciao Giacomo. First of all we need to make a distinction between living on a budget and making videos about living on a budget, which certainly is not the same thing. As for the second, I believe the purpose is pretty obvious: be useful to people who are interested in learning certain skills. About why to live on a budget, I understand your point. You seem to me to have a perspective of a person who grew up in shortage of wealth, or in any case in a different situation of mine. I was lucky enough to never experience poverty as I come from an average wealthy Italian family, who has never had to face real problems with shortage of money. To me the only problem to face is the opposite, which means the consequences of the exaggerated abundance of wealth that the Western world has nowadays. My choice of living a frugal life comes from this standpoint.
