John Robert Williamson AM is an Australian country music and folk music singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, television host and conservationist. Williamson usually writes and performs songs that relate to the history and culture of Australia, particularly the outback, in a similar vein to Slim Dusty and Buddy Williams before him. Williamson has released over fifty albums, ten videos, five DVDs, and two lyric books and has sold more than 4,000,000 albums in Australia.[1] His best-known hit is "True Blue". On Australia Day (26 January) in 1992 Williamson was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) with the citation: "for service to Australian country music and in stimulating awareness of conservation issues". He has received twenty-six Golden Guitar trophies at the Country Music Awards of Australia, he has won three ARIA Music Awards for Best Country Album and, in 2010, was inducted into the related Hall of Fame.

So hopefully you can share our music to more people in America because I feel our bands have been given a roar deal around the world.. so thanks again buck it's a great nic name. Most people in Australia have a nic name. Mine is louie.. after my dad.. to. I think Texans are more like Aussie then anyone anywhere else in the world. Or Aussie are like Texans.. lol. But it's good to se a official sheriff so down to earth. Am sure your dad would be very proud. True blue. Means fair. Decent. Gives everyone a fair go .. offer to help .do the right thing. Trusted. Some one you could leave your kids with and he would take care of them like his own.. you no American fought with Australia in the first world war .. under our command.i think it was there first battle Because we cared about our boys just like yous care about us in the second world war. My grandfather Kenneth carrol.. who fought in New Guinea with the American said they where some of the braves young men he ever fought alongside.. he made it back home because of American army boys they where down to their last few bullets and thought this it it.. but that morning a plane landed under fire loaded with more ammo and they held of the jap attack it was the battle of WAU.. bit of history why a lot of Aussies do appreciate all them young men who help fight the japs in the island campaign. Just letting you yanks know Australia remember your brave young men who travel so farr away to the land down under and help us in the darkest moment in our history.. thank you to all American from a Aussie .

True Blue gets me in the feels every time I hear it
As a kid I once said to my dad that I didn’t like “Waltzing Matilda “ and he said, “Well you’ve never marched behind a military band playing it with ten thousand people cheering you on.”
Even I got teary. John Williamson, who wrote the song, sang this at Steve Irwin’s funeral at Australian Zoo, as we all know, just bought back the memories 😢
Just found Aussie John Williamson, country singer’s UA-cam page. So many songs I haven’t heard in ages, I was singing along to.

As a ex marine you should watch the WW2 soldiers marching and singing Waltzing Matilda put out by the AWM (Australian war memorial). The marine 1st division took it on as their song. I live where the 1st division came to recover from the horrors of Guadalcanal. I walk my dog at the local cemetery and there is a marine buried there who obviously fell in love married and stayed. Citation oval in Mount Martha is where the congressional medal of honour was given to 4 recipients they are not forgotten and I was at the unveiling on a plaque a few years ago,it was very moving.

I love how us Aussie's come together to sing both songs. Brings a tear to my eye.
The song True Blue is usually used in clips of floods and fires, which are somewhat common, showing mateship and coming together to support the survivors and those helping them. Mateship is something that we hold so dear.
* Tru Blu was also the name of a race car, raced by Dick Johnson.
My Grandfather (an orphan) served in the Australian Army and one of those who landed at Gallipoli…… he survived and was sent on to France to continue to fight……. after 4 years service he was finally discharged and sent home (TPD) …….. The song “And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda” is based on a young soldier’s time at Gallipoli is probably the saddest song ever written and I can’t even read the lyrics without shedding a tear. John Williamson does perform this song……. be warned it is heartbreaking 💔.
You hit the nail on the head, mate. Its national Aussie pride for sure. Like the Yanks have for their red, white and blue, not many countries have that innate pride left for their countries now and are willing to stand by them!
It's a shame when people of other countries could care less about their country. Not flying their flag, and really loving where they live.

A little bit of trivia the US Ist Marine Division is the only miiltary unit to use Waltzing Matilda as an official marching tune they adopted it in recognition of the time that they spent based in Australla during WW2. Check out the historical footage from the Australian War Memorial archives of Australian troops marching to battle in WW1 singing Waltzing Matilda. True Blue uses a lot of Auusie slang so even with the lyrics you may struggle to understand the meaning of some words but you definately picked up on the emotion behind it. In Aussie true blue = very genuine very loyal.

Unraveling the mystery of the title "Waltzing Matilda"....
Back in the day, swaggies (hobos) were a common sight in Australia. They walked from one region to another looking for work, with a bag slung over their back. The bag contained their meager possessions. As they walked along, the bag (swag) swung from side to side. The motion was given the term waltzing. "Matilda" is a slang term to mean a de facto wife who accompanied a wanderer. In Australia, the bushman's swag was regarded as a sleeping partner, hence his "Matilda". So, through the day, as he walked along, he was "waltzing with Matilda"

True Blue has become a popular song for funeral services for men.We had it at my father's nd it's a description of a good Aussie bloke and what they stand for. Makes me a little sad but still a great song.❤
John Williamson, what a true blue Aussie, Back in 1974, Australia had a Referendum to see if we wanted to change our national anthem from God Save the Queen. Then, the people vote for the new national anthem. Waltzing Matilda came 2nd, obviously Advance Australia Fair won.
Should point out a few things in the song.
Swag: bed roll.
Swagman: a transient labourer who travelled by foot from farm to farm carrying his belongings in a swag.
Billabong: is a watering hole. That was bend of an old river were either end has dried up, and the bend is still full of water.
Coolibah tree: type of gumtree.
Jumbuck: Male Sheep.
Squatter: is a rich person who squatted on large parcels of land for farming.
Troopers: were our early form of police actually military.

A Jumbuck is an Aussie slang word for a sheep. Waltzing Matilda ,is to go walkabout with a swag on your shoulder. True Blue is a real, genuine ( dinkum ) Aussie. Knocking off for a smoko is taking a tea/ coffee break.
If you want to see Australians interacting with an Aussie band . You should listen to The Angels singing Am I Ever Goi go See Your Face Again . The audience response is totally organic. Every time this is played Aussies of all ages will sing the response. It's got to be live and a later recording.

Hi Buck/Mike. In disasters (like the 2011 floods) we see "true blue" Australians that help friends/family/neighbours without hesitation or request for payments/help in the future. In the video clip for True Blue, you will see the Rural fire brigade (in yellow) which is mostly run by volunteers who get nothing as individuals (just like the CWA or the volunteers in the SES).

John Williamson does a great version of Eric Bogle's 'And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda'. Somehow, hearing this with an Aussie accent makes it a bit more relatable. Eric Bogle's version will always be a special song, along with the great 'No Man's Land' (aka The Green Fields of France). Eric Bogle was born in Scotland and didn't immigrate to Australia until 25yrs of age whilst still singing with a heavy Scottish accent. No matter who sings this, it will always be special to us. I quite enjoyed hearing these songs today. They remind us what a special nation we have created together. I'd love to hear these two songs played named above plus another that many believe should be our National Anthem, 'I Am Australian' by The Seekers. There is a video of their final performance where all five verses are sung. It's special to us all, as it tells the history of our great land from the Indigenous people who have lived here for over 60,000yrs, the Convicts - including my own Convict past, the Gold Diggers searching for the mother load etc., all wrapped up in one brilliant song. If a referendum was held to vote for a new National Anthem, this will win hands down. Mike, you don't need to react to every request you recieve, yet do so when you're ready to. You've only just started your Channel and should set your own pace. You'll be overwhelmed with all of us Aussies making requests.
I'm not sure how much you know about Australian Rules Football (AFL - Australian Football League) aka Footy, but there is a great song called 'Up There Cazaly' written by Mike Brady at the request of the then VFL (Victorian Football League). There are many videos that have been made for this iconic song, yet the one from the Grand Final of 2023 which was sung live by Mike Brady shows our magnificent MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground), which is commomnly shortened to just 'the G' with a capacity crowd. FYI, Roy Cazaly was a ruckman for South Melboune, which is now the Sydney Swans. When players soar into the air to mark the ball they truly can look as if they are flying. It was Cazaly's teammate at the time who was the first to call out "up there Cazaly" when he went to mark the ball during a match. It then became a catch-cry by his fans. This was incorporated into the song as well as our love for footy.

Jumbuck is a lamb. Tucker bag is food bag. Squatter was an English kind of Policeman. Waltzing Matilda is his swag (bedroll carried on his back). Matilda was his wife's name, which he had named his swag after because she had died, so she waltzed (swung on his back) with him. Just to explain.

Interesting to hear that you know the song and used to sing it as a child. Generally when reactors react to Eric Bogle's The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, no one has known the song it is referring to.
Reminds me of a conversation I had with some American gamers a few years back whilst playing. The older one in his sixties recalled learning and watching Picnic at Hanging Rock(Aussie classic book and film) at school, yet when I brought up To Kill a Mockingbird Bird(as my ingame name was partly derived from Scout's brother Jeremy, referred to as Jem), they had never heard of that book or film!!! So we learned about an American classic in school and they had learned about an Aussie classic... amazed me!!

These guys and girl who sing country folk music travel many thousands of klm / miles and days on the roads
Just to sing to the country people and sometimes might only be 20 people that have made many days drive to get there
These artists say its hard to getting there but generally more memorable as you know how far these people travelled to listern to you
This looks like a country charity event to help the farmers sometimes its just to get them to forget their troubles for awhile and be happy
Letting them know their not alone where all in it together
