I literally had no idea that mice or rodents were an issue while traveling in a van! Yikes!😬😳😓I've also never seen another vanlifer talk about this issue at all. Not that I watch a lot but I used to watch quite a few. You learn something new every day I guess.

It’s funny what a natural deterrent can do. Even at home we use Peppermint around windowsills inside AND outside and in the laundry area and under ALL the sinks. Well, Tiffany, I am not surprised that you don't get mice because you are always washing your dishes and you even put bleach in your water tank and you seem to be constantly picking up after yourself. Also, the peppermint oil and mothballs do seem like a very good idea. You are a very strong woman to live a life as such that you do, many of us can't live such a life. And some of us don't even have the resources to even get started. Only the strong and courageous can live as you do.

May I suggest a peppermint "paddy" permanently in the way far back of your glove box. In my cars the cabin air filter is behind the glove box. Yes, I had a field mouse get up into that filter to sleep (& poop!!) after building a GINORMOUS nest in my engine block. I found the nest next day after I moved campsites (had parked next to a big bush); cleaned the nest out & the next morning there was another nest built in the same area! I've purchased several usb rechargeable motion sensing lights to put in my engine each night. Thank the Lord I've never had a mouse in my vehicles. SHUDDER!

  • @ArtsyLadyCrafter
    @ArtsyLadyCrafter 2 роки тому +10

Yep, that's what I'm most concerned about. I feel it is a real issue and that it takes extra effort and time everyday to keep them out. I think it takes more work everyday than I would have to do in my apt or home. I had to come to terms with it because it was one of the main things that stopped me from going forward with my desire to go nomad. I've learned that nomads with the most beautiful, newer rigs have gotten them. Others say, "It's not a big deal, no problem. If people get them they're not clean. Just clean up like you should and you won't get them."
I think no matter how clean you are, there's still a big chance that they will come in. Even if you don't cook in your rig, they may come in simply for warmth, because of water smell and because they smell a human. They might even like the smell of coffee. 😧 They also like to chew the wires under the hood because they are no longer made of petroleum-based wire but now are made of soy-based wire. So there are a number of reasons, even when being clean, that they could come in. Also, some nomads used LED or string lights under their rig. They say it works very well.
I like your use of mothballs. Unfortunately, they are so strong that they smell out of doors too. I think they can stink up the campsite. I've used them outside the back door at home to repel snakes. Every time I went outside on the patio they smelled. After a few days the smell went away. I've also found that they can smell when stored in plastic bins, so I doubt if mothballs will be my first choice when I go on the road this summer.
Here are some notes I've taken on what other nomads use: bay leaves, mint essential oil, cinnamon around the tires and inside, balsam fir oil, nutmeg, chili flakes, star anise, capsacin/red pepper, peppermint and cayenne outside, peppermint inside, peppermint teabags, Simple Green spray on wires.
Here's a recipe for spray: 1 c water, 2 tbsp chili powder, 1 tbsp olive oil, spray under, around and on sides of rig.
Congrats on NO MICE and TFS!

LaSandra Winters Smiley, You can walk around the outside of your mom's house and plug up holes with steel wool that you can buy in the paint department of Lowe's or home depot. Especially where pipes and wires go into the house, dryer vents all have gaps that you can stuff with steel wool. Also basement doors are notorious for allowing them in. Put a door sweep to fill the gap. Good luck.

    Hi Tiffany.
Those moth balls are potent with their smell.
Be careful breathing those...I believe the package tells you not breathe it.
    I personally can't stand them.
I put 1 or 2 in my garbage can before just for odors and to deter any animal that may want to get into it.
But I am not a vandweller of course .
    And I have 2 indoor cats! 😊
But be careful about breathing the mothballs....not good if I am not mistaken.
I guess you aren't bothered by them if you have been doing it 2 years or so.

Great advice Tiffany, you’re a clever lady! Yes, peppermint oil is fabulous and also moth balls. I used to get mice in my Jeep constantly when I lived in the mountains, it’s very dangerous because the deer mice with white bellies carry Hanta virus. They made nests in my cabin filter and got into the Jeep via the glovebox, the engine and up through the chassis, so I used a garden water bottle and sprayed peppermint oil around the Jeep everyday, in the engine area, the hood vents and around wheel wells, and put peppermint sprayed napkins in the glove box. In addition I’d put plastic sticky glue traps in empty cereal boxes inside the Jeep to catch them and dispose of them later. I also strung blinking white Christmas lights on the ground all around the Jeep and carport area to scare them off during the night, it really helped to reduce the traffic!

I've watched and saved over 500 videos for vans, campers, schoolies, and tiny homes. You are thr FIRST person that I have ever seen address this issue. I personally use the peppermint extract and spray everywhere in my townhouse. Especially the kitchen behind the stove and refrigerator. I even spray around my windows, doors, and patio. Every year I've had neighbors complain about a mouse but thank goodness I've never had the issue. I was very frustrated last year, I had a 6ft mint bush growing against my shed outside for the last 14yrs. My neighbor had a mouse next door and asked if I'd seen one. I told him no and even explained about the mint bush keeping away the rodents, skunks, and squirrels. We came home the next day and it had been chopped down and tossed in the back lawn. I've bern pissed to say the least! Mint works!

Thank you so much. I’m new to this and have only been out a few times. Someone said Irish spring soap but others said no. I stayed at my daughters apartment and there was a raccoon that got into everyone’s trash containers. I shaved the Irish spring and put it in the bottom tray of the container and he (Gregory they named him) never gets into their bin. So I’ll just try all three, lol. Thank you! Just subscribed and will be following you.

I am full time as well, in a 40 Ft Big rig. I went through the RV with a flashlight sealed off inside and outside the rig with foam and steel wool. When I setup, I place industrial rat trap boxes by each tire. In my cargo bays I have four battery operated rat/mice rodent repellent that produce sound and strobing lights and they are mounted. In my wet and electrical bay, I keep a small bait box and ensure the bays are closed. Side note- I do spray home defense on my hoses leading up to the rig for ants and any other critters. I keep lights on at night under my rig as well. Inside I have rodent plug in units. I use peppermint and clove oil under the sinks. So far so good. Tiffany thanks for the idea on the brick for the trash can!

Another suggestion is dryer sheets. They hate the perfume smell and its a repellent. Smells much better than moth balls. Moth balls are good to repell snakes.

we've had a couple incidents with rats/mice - peppermint works with fleas too when we do get a mouse we use those sticky pads and it works everytime if you use the original trap, be sure to use peanut butter as bait!

@@WhereisTiffany I’m fine. My traveling has slowed a little…not much. But I always put out these string led lights…they are bigger than fairy lights. They are solar, and I put around perimeter of my car…at night, boondocking….of course I’m not in one place more than a few days and I usually have a fire going until bed time…..luckily I have not had a problem, but I did purchase moth balls, and will use them. I was more concerned about attracting bears with scents where I camp…usually in mountains not in desert….but…gurl….you got me thinking….lol…anyway, I’m always praying for you ……you are awesome and one of my heroes!
