When I attended your Summer RTR in Flagstaff a few years ago, at the Coconino National forest. I camped for 3 nights with you and your tribe. When I left my truck was running poorly as I drove toward Williams Az. To make a long story short appaently Pack Rats had gotten in the engine compartment and chewed up wires. I had to have the truck towed back to the Ford dealer in Flagstaff for repairs to the tune of $650 on top of the $150 tow. The mechanic at the dealership told my this happens frequently. When camping in this environment leave your hood open, and put a few of those small solar wedge light under the engine compartment at night and recharge them during the day. This will help detour critters.

Thank you so much Bob, for taking the time to put this video out. I really appreciate the simplest types of things and have experienced expense from chewed wires.

Clothes dryer sheets..the perfumy ones... tucked in and around the engine compartment, especially the wire harness area... moth balls also work..put them in a light cloth pouch and hang them in the areas as needed... The water bucket works great I've used it often. Thanks Bob, lots of great advise as usual.

I had issues with mice and chipmunks and squirrels getting into my engine . One time my transmission wires were chewed up , cost me 400 bucks plus towing. The mechanic told me to put dryer sheets in the engine compartment to keep the mice and squirrels away , so far it's worked , just thought I would share

You can get mice off glueboards with a little veg oil. You can also do the bucket with no water they can't get out. Then, release them when you leave .

Of all my decades in the wilderness 100% of food and equipment damage has been from rodents. It is incredible how much damage they can cause.

I have used the bucket system for the last 10 years in my camp in New England in the winter. The first year I caught 42 mice over the course of a couple of months in the fall. They are looking for a place to nest. Over the next years there have been less, I use Rv anti freeze in the winter it doesn’t freeze. ❤️

I'm no tree-hugger but please DON'T use poison. I've seen a beautiful owl die after eating a poisoned mouse. So sad.

Last year, my ex-boss's 93 year old mother showed us this 5 gallon trap. We were putting out the old kind of mousetraps, and catching 2 or 3 mice a night. We put out a trap similar to yours, and caught 27 mice by morning.

Thank you so much Bob! It is so important, because the wires are very much needed, and expensive. Thank you for sharing your knowledge ☺️ God bless you, and your loved ones.

That is the best mousetrap I've ever used, and the little devils just can't resist peanut butter. Make sure to use the kind with lots of sugar, not the all natural stuff. Thanks for putting this out there Bob.

I cornered a small rat (in my sticks and bricks) and am still haunted, if you will, by the memory of bashing that little bugger to death - it wasn't a happy or dignified scene for either of us. :(

Just a side note for folks dealing with rodents in their vehicles... rodents have fleas and the types of fleas they are infested with are predominantly Oropsylla montana and Xenopsylla cheopis. This is important to note as both of these types of fleas are capable of becoming infected with Yersinia pestis which is the genus and species of what we all commonly known as plague; and those fleas are capable of disease transmission to humans. Now before you say whoa we don't have plague in the US, well yes we do and in fact the CDC reports there in an average of 7 reported cases each year (range 1 to 17) with the main cluster of endemic disease being in what I like to call the four corners states or AZ, NM, CO and UT. Although NM has the more concentrated area of the disease and there are also cases found in CA as well. And I must also add that all the reported cases in the US that I am aware of are in the western half of the United States. Meaning that you can find cases reported in the states in the western half of the continental US.
