Im African American too and simply loved "Midnight At The Oasis" I always looked forward to seeing Maria Maldour in the 70s with her curly sexy hair. That guitar solo is amazing and sort of played outside the key signature which was unusual for top 40 radio but it worked well. It was clear those players were jazz musicians. I really miss melody harmony and rythym in a song. I walk by car radios today and hear mostly repetitive junk thats ok for dancing but nothing to sit down and listen to.

Don't know why Midnight At The Oasis hit so big? Maria, those guitar licks by Amos Garrett and your voice killed! That's why. It's not rocket science. Though I loved that entire album, Midnight At The Oasis is a definitive moment in that period in time.

God it was such a wonderful time for music! Gone away are the days of true musicians I mean actually could play an instrument live, without a whole production of electrical nonsense aaand you understood the lyrics because they could actually sing!
Thank you Maria for helping me through the 70's and trying to figure out guys - you changed my life 💋 xoxo from a native of California. Oh, we remember yes we remember😏

I don't know how many African Americans might know who she is, but I'll tell you what; this lady and her song Midnight at the Oasis, brought many smiles to my life when I was a child. I love the song! I loved it then and still do. Now, my 9 year old loves the song. She loves hearing all about life in the 70's and the wonderful feelings that this song evoked. I just want Mari Muldaur to know that her music transcended races, and now generations too. I smile inside to this day when I hear the song.

From my point of view, the jug band thing held her back from truly great things she was so capable of doing. But she seemed to be happy with what she did and that is what counts. What a sweet lady she remains today....She should have considered being a big time radio personality as people would and still do admire her a great deal I am sure. What a great speaking ability..such a fluid story teller. She never pauses and just keeps going...What a gal!!

It was SO beautiful it scared me...and it STILL does 38 yrs later!
To this day, it remains the most PERFECT guitar solo on a pop record.IMHO.

That was pretty narcissistic of Maria to say that she had no idea why David's song had any appeal to people. Also in the way she described choosing it, as if the song itself sounded completely uninteresting but she only threw it on the record to fill a hole so to speak. My guess is that she is offended that someone else's song became a hit for her and not one of her own songs. Sorry honey, but that wasn't a cool thing to do. Sometimes we just have to be grateful for any opportunity we get. Without this song, Maria would have just been a footnote in the folk history of NYC in the 60s.
