Maria, you are a living legend and "Midnight at the Oasis" was hypnotic for us teens in the 70's... Thank you Maria!
damn, it's May 2023, and I'm STILL crying when I hear this Song!!! Maybe it's not too late to Find a Camel and My Maria Muldaur.....
Her song midnight at the Oasis was nothing short of amazing ♥️
1974, started dating the girl I married, listening to Midnight at the Oasis every day, still love this song today!
I'm 63 year's old now ,but back then ihad the biggest crush , thank you for the music it was a magic time.
Im African American too and simply loved "Midnight At The Oasis" I always looked forward to seeing Maria Maldour in the 70s with her curly sexy hair. That guitar solo is amazing and sort of played outside the key signature which was unusual for top 40 radio but it worked well. It was clear those players were jazz musicians. I really miss melody harmony and rythym in a song. I walk by car radios today and hear mostly repetitive junk thats ok for dancing but nothing to sit down and listen to.
Vincent M what can be done about it
And who's responsible for the junk music
My dad found a jukebox and we played Midnight at the Oasis...one of the soundtracks to my childhood...In my 60th year and still listening to it ❤❤❤❤
I'll bet you are still secretly hoping, even after all these Years, that you will find your Sheikh!! :D
Don't know why Midnight At The Oasis hit so big? Maria, those guitar licks by Amos Garrett and your voice killed! That's why. It's not rocket science. Though I loved that entire album, Midnight At The Oasis is a definitive moment in that period in time.
It' a complex song with a lot of chord changes. so much better than the pop today.
Agree.
God it was such a wonderful time for music! Gone away are the days of true musicians I mean actually could play an instrument live, without a whole production of electrical nonsense aaand you understood the lyrics because they could actually sing!
Thank you Maria for helping me through the 70's and trying to figure out guys - you changed my life 💋 xoxo from a native of California. Oh, we remember yes we remember😏
I don't know how many African Americans might know who she is, but I'll tell you what; this lady and her song Midnight at the Oasis, brought many smiles to my life when I was a child. I love the song! I loved it then and still do. Now, my 9 year old loves the song. She loves hearing all about life in the 70's and the wonderful feelings that this song evoked. I just want Mari Muldaur to know that her music transcended races, and now generations too. I smile inside to this day when I hear the song.
She is from an Italian Family-
I am African American and I love Midnight At The Oasis - one of my favorite songs
I could not have said it better.
Love this song too❤
@Kenneth J Held your mouth open I reckon.
Midnight's guitar solo is to die for.
I can listen to Maria sing Midnight At The Oasis all day and night. It’s a sultry, sexy tune and Maria puts the right amount of each into this tune. I first saw her and heard her sing it on a TV show “The Midnight Hour” . Great tune by a great artist.
Very Cool to see you again Maria ~ Much Love to You ~
What an incredibly smart, cool, classy, Kind and Beautiful chick!!!!!!!!!! SO glad that her persona is just as kick-ass as the amazing voice in front of it! SZ xo ❤️
I love midnight at the Oasis and love you Maria
Thank you Midnight At the Oasis! It's a very dreamy romantic song.
MIDNIGHT AT THE OASIS IS A SMOOOTH CLASSIC..... FOREVER IN MY HEART!!! MARIA, I LOVE YOU FOR ALWAYSSSSS ❤️❤️❤️!!
I remember hearing "Midnight at the Oasis" And then seeing Maria on television and how it invoked an exotic feeling, The rhythm, lyrics the woman with this middle eastern look.
God I love this woman!
Maria was an absolute BABE and Midnight at the Oasis is definitely one of my all time favorite songs - soooo unique, with one of the most original guitar solos ever! Thanks for the memories Maria.
I first heard her sing while record shopping one day in 1973...bought the album right then. Such an original with her own distinct sound...
Maria D'Amato - you rock!
She just turned 80 on September 12. Happy birthday!
Thanks so much for posting this! I am so impressed with the way Maria can tell her story without an interviewer prodding her along. She is so articulate and keeps the communication flowing like a pro.
Midnight at the Oasis definitely my favorite. So much so that I’ve included it in my daily vocals. Love love this song! So exotic.
Midnight at the Oasis is a Masterpiece! Excellent music! I like it! ✌️👍☮️🎧
she doesn't know why everyone loves 'midnight at the oasis' ? It's the way she sings it. Her voice and her ability to use it gets demonstrated in that song better than any other of hers I know of and probably most of us.
So true. Nice song, but her voice made it.
Well read intelligent wonderful woman! Love you Maria!
Thanks for posting. Maria is a very talented lady who's been there, done that and come out a survivor. God bless you Maria.
Absolutely marvelous! It makes me want to dance, really dance !
Maria knows how to work a tambourine on that hip!
Go Girl. I'm a seasoned Sista, knowing real music when I hear it.
Gotta agree about that solo. I worked on it for weeks and finally mastered it, but it's a brilliantly original work of art.
Thank you, Maria Muldaur, for this lovely video ! Thank you for all the hard work it took to be where you are, and for sure, your perfect, lovely, voice and expression, when you sing... Yes, Midnight at the Oasis was the first time I heard you, and now, 50 years later, I still love you and your songs!! Also that absolutely perfect guitar work of Amos Garrett - stunningly beautiful, jazz oriented, with so much feeling, wow !!! I hope and pray that you and yours will always be Blessed, and pray tonight for you guys !!! Thank you again !! With Love, Fran Danco
It’s the melody and musicality about that song it’s the melody
What a sweetheart. And 'Midnight' is, as others have said here, just a perfect song.
Thanks for posting these clips.
Maria really impresses me and she was such a sweetheart in the 1960s. How could anyone not love her?
Oh yes, there was no other way to do copy licks. I wore out a lot of vinyl from 1966-1985. LOL. Amos Garrett's solo was quite unlike any other at that time..very jazzy (technically speaking) and without effects.
You did very well indeed.
This Is A Good Interview Its Good To See She Still Around😉That Song Was Mine And My Lady At The Time it Was Our Together Song In 1974 😄Thanks For The Music 🎶 NYC Stay Safe📀📀
An iconic song, I was going to school when this song was released.
thanks for posting ,i was 10 at the moment and living in Puerto Rico, this song has always been in my memory...
Thanks for giving a chance to those around you,one very fortunate decision.
Loved her in midnight special...midnight @ the oasis.
What a sharp character! And a great song!
I've been your fan since Midnight at the Oasis.
I thought she was in her 60's she looks beautiful ...some women never loose their inner or outer beauty she is smart :)
her voice says it all
Somehow, I always knew she would be this cuddly one day. Can I have my Retro- Hug now please? . . .Listening to her, as a seventeen year old stuck in the then smokey North West of England, I had NOOO idea she had this awesome musical background. O Shallow Youth . . .
Great song, nice interview.
Thx
Great video!
Great song !!! Watching her sing it always brings back memories of my youth !!!
I was born in the fifties, and I was a singer in a rockband, I always like her to, I am originally from ny and we used to go into the village, so I a with her on that scene. God bless you Maria
I find it Amazing that some of the biggest hits of all time were Put On albums as fillers or after thoughts. I'm glad that this "after thought" was recorded. Because It is a massive generational hit.
Excellent!
thanks for the beautiful music!!!
I went to her show in Memphis Tn And met her backstage. I felt like we had a connection but my wife at the time was in the audience waiting for me to take her back home,. Never forgot Maria and that song. still makes me smile when I hear it.
your amazing Maria! love you and your music , your still beautiful!
fascinating...so vividly recounted...I was there lol
MM came up with an even better album in 1976 with "Sweet Harmony" co-produced by Joe Boyd and Lenny Waronker and features a whole host of great musicians. One of my all time favourite albums.
Love this women, I became a man with this song at the age of 15 1974
Hi Maria. My brother Rafael Meng is the fellow who drove your old trailer to Oregon. A few years ago. He's going to move down here to Baja California sur..near Cabo. Slot of folks have headed down here and are playing also. Sammy Hagar has a restaurant in Cabo. If Rafa ever gets his rear down here and you want to visit. Give him a holler. He never changes his phone number! Lol😊
Yeah whatever, lady. You’re a living legend with this beautiful song you created. Enjoy!
From my point of view, the jug band thing held her back from truly great things she was so capable of doing. But she seemed to be happy with what she did and that is what counts. What a sweet lady she remains today....She should have considered being a big time radio personality as people would and still do admire her a great deal I am sure. What a great speaking ability..such a fluid story teller. She never pauses and just keeps going...What a gal!!
Maria's lost a lot of weight and she's had a total makeover.Don't know if she's had some work done but her face and neck looks much smoother. She sure doesn't look like she's 71. Here's to a gorgeous and talented lady!
I always wonder about the stories behid he songs...it's good to hear Midnight at the oasis' and david nichtern's story. I hope he and she are still getting royalties.
Cool stories. Old people are cool. Usually. Now that I'm old it's cool.
she is a beautiful lady
Still so beautiful!
One of my favs. So beautiful!!!!!
💜
But, really... absolutely no mention of Amos Garrett's phenomenal guitar work on "Midnight"...?! I'm pretty sure that those gorgeously melodic fills and solo truly contributed to the huge success of that song, and Maria's pop leap at the time.
eelalien no kidding! that solo has been one of my favorites all these years...Jimmy Page even said it was one of his favorites as well. You can hear the influence in some of Jimmy's work. "Down By The Seaside" comes to mind~
Thank You! For the last week I have been meaning to find out who the player was from that song!
Without Amos Garretts brilliant guitar work on that record it would've been nowhere near as good as what it was! Pete Townsend and Eric Clapton were discussing the guitar playing on the record and thought it was two guitarists playing... Says it all really!
Best guitar solo all-time.
She could rock a set of jeans. Oh my
I didn't know of Midnight at the Oasis until I heard Betty Wright parody it in her live version of Clean Up Woman. The Midnight Special version is 🔥
The 70s were the best
John Sebastion was talking about this era at his concert tonight in Montreal - their stories pretty much match
Such a fine artist! And her ex Geoff is iconically gifted.
Blessed !!!🌵🌵🌵🎵🐪🐪🐪🎶🎉😃
How many of these songs are out there, those that were little considered, that became long-lasting hits? Emerson, Lake and Palmer's, Lucky Man, was one that was not wanted on the self-titled album. It was written by Greg Lake when he was 12. Still a great song.
Glad to know it took you weeks.
Took me about 38 yrs!! Ha ha..
Best wishes to you.)
The song was catchy and different.
Well... I was 9 when this came out and I didn't know quite of what she was talking about in the song but I did have a crush on a classmate who's name happened to be Maria. Maybe a video should be done for this song. I'll be the star.
Strange that she doesn't mention Amos Garrett who played guitar on 'Midnight'.
one of the greatest guitar solos of all time...
@@shemphoward999 Yes indeed! It's like the old adage ....... ~ Less is more ~ ! How true! I was lucky enough to meet Maria's ex-husband Geoff Muldaur, and Amos Garret during an interview I did at Southampton college in 1975 with Paul Butterfield and the Better Days Band. Ronnie Barron played keys.
Amos Garrett's guitar solo stunned me when i first heard it in 1974.
I just could not work out if he used fingers or a slide or both.
It was SO beautiful it scared me...and it STILL does 38 yrs later!
To this day, it remains the most PERFECT guitar solo on a pop record.IMHO.
I love this interview and Maria is always so delightful but it's a shame Maria doesn't actually mention Amos Garrett by person because this guy needs more attention.
Florida. And midnight at the oasis
She looks a lot different from 1974, she is unrecognizable today. Paul Simon still looks pretty much the same minus a few wrinkles and hair loss but he is still recognizable.
StevenC32 Unfortunately it's called age
I still fancy her.....
Why u people being mean
She's still the same person .and beautiful.
Yep ...Maria as you know , 'Ya gotta pay yur dues down at the union hall or in Columbus Georgia like Ma Rainey.'
Ry Cooter and David Lindley ? Git outta town !
The '70s was the closest thing to Heaven on Earth there will ever be.
She looks like the dance mom lady.
i love her so much and she is so cute i will like to give her one big kiss.
She has such a unque voice. In 1973-1974 she had a great body. She had really had a sexy booty, ha ha and could really play her instruments and a very unque voice. Love you Maria
She still does come on now!
stay classy chuckles
I heard what she said about sex appeal, maybe YOU need to hear again!
Does anyone remember a son she recorded, "I DO" by Connie Johnson....please post!!!!! plzzzzzz!!!
She recorded a song, " I DO", by Connie Johnson" on the "There is love" album 1982, ANYONE HAVE IT? PLEEEEEZZZZ POST!!!! THANK YOU SO, SO, MUCH!!!
I was tenacious back then-remember when you had to keep putting the needle back a thousand times on the track, because there was no "pause" on vinyl? lol
I'm dating myself.
what's vinyl?
@@ebsenraptzski9522 shame about your IQ
U know ppl are full of it when they bring up race unfortunately some of us fall for it.
Btw I am 100 percent African
My continent. Ko
I thought it was just me
Her voice had everything to do with her success, as did her sex appeal!
What's wrong with being approached with wanting a little "sex appeal"? ...offended today? I get it but it's gone all overboard today. A bunch of social hammering. I'd see it as a compliment but ..WHATEVER!
Perhaps a little disappointing that the "person" I associated with the most sensual pop song ever (for me) had/has no idea why people loved it. A case of where the ;author and performer are very different human beings.
That's grea6. That fucking solo is beyond....
No
oye maria no mames por que te dejaste engordar, no se vale
That was pretty narcissistic of Maria to say that she had no idea why David's song had any appeal to people. Also in the way she described choosing it, as if the song itself sounded completely uninteresting but she only threw it on the record to fill a hole so to speak. My guess is that she is offended that someone else's song became a hit for her and not one of her own songs. Sorry honey, but that wasn't a cool thing to do. Sometimes we just have to be grateful for any opportunity we get. Without this song, Maria would have just been a footnote in the folk history of NYC in the 60s.
