  • A basic introduction to creating (fragging) and planning a package (mission) in Falcon 4 BMS. A basic coverage of threat and force needed analysis, and the in-game mechanics of setting everything up.
    CORRECTIONS:
    1. The target for your SEAD/Escort mission should be the strike flight - thanks MavJP
    How to time your flightplan:
    1. Lock the 1st steer and the "TGT" steer
    2. Everything else should be unlocked
    3. Change the 1st steer (take off) times to liking
    4. Change the target time of the strike or main flight, make sure they can fly the other steerpoints OK
    5. Change the takeoff times of the flights as need be to ensure the steerpoints have acceptable cruise altitudes- the most important thing is TOT (time on target). note: In multiplayer games if the take off time is longer than 4 minutes away between flights some players will be forced to wait at the 2d screen before getting in game.

    Wow, this is incredible. Not only does this give an in-depth, easy-to-understand tutorial on how to create packages for sorties in the game (you could actually play an entire campaign doing this without going on a single sortie yourself), it actually sheds a lot of insight on the various kinds of factors squadron commanders have to take into consideration when they're tasked to create packages in real life. Awesome job.

    They don’t make games like they did anymore...l
    Shit, I had this game for years and never gave the right attention to it...
    Now, 20 years later, I saw this (random) video and I can’t wait till I get home so I can download it and enjoy it the right way.
    Thanks!

    Last one.
    Having watched the whole thing...Thank you. I can't put into words the child-like invigoration you've imparted by demonstrating a level of depth in a game I thought I knew inside and out. It's like waking up the day after Christmas, and being the only one surprised that it's a DIFFERENT Christmas that day as well.
    You went into depth, and your understanding is obvious. It was a raw joy to see so much consideration put into ANY form of video game. Can you imagine something like this launching now-days? Coffee table sized manuals? Dynamic, "plotless" campaigns? People would throw themselves from skyscraper windows at the thought of it. This fired up an old, deep nostalgia, and I wouldn't have missed it for anything.
    If you ever do get the chance and feel in the mood, I wasn't joking. You often referenced how much you were leaving out of the video, and you do that on most of your works. I know full well we remember most what we figure out for ourselves, and I'd never even suggest I want my hand held. That defeats the purpose of the experience, that being "Success, under the most demanding of circumstances, through training and dedication to craft."
    What I WOULD like is a few of what you might call Intermediate/Advanced tutorials. Not hand holding, but going into greater, wider depth on given subjects, covering advanced subjects, things like that. Just enough to get me started in the right direction, you know. What to look out for, ways i could start experimenting, etc.
    And I wasn't kidding. I would flat-out donate to the group you fly with via PayPal in appreciation for them. Surely you guys use a private server of some kind. If I could pay a month or two of it's rent, I'd be happy to.
    Regardless, I consider your tutorials works of nostalgic art.
    And I say = As far as I'm concerned, Job Well Done.

    • @tanit

      The challenge is that it's tricky to make an inclusive advanced video, a lot of it is one off things you learn, usually after failing horribly or reading some doctrinal manual tucked away. I tell you what I'm remote and traveling right now but I'll make another addendum for package planning when I get home. Expect it within a week.

      You can. If you click on an engineer battalion (make sure they are engineers and not supply) you'll see a little line with a circle on it. Drag that onto the bridge. The engineers will move there and repair it.

    Great tutorial!
    When it comes to modifying take-off and arrival times at target SP to sync up multiple flights, it might be helpful to align the TOT times first and then work backwards from there to derive reasonable take-off times.

    Thanks to this video I finally fragg'd my own package - the right way this time - AND flew in it, AND brought the airbase to 0%.
    I didn't hit no where near the same amount and diversity of items that the video did, yet still got the base down to 0%.
    Some problems:
    I flew the mission, and had one SEAD and one Escort elements fragg'd with me. But I didn't see (or could not find, didn't know how to locate nor talk to) the other flights/elements. Luckily my package/element had four birds; I made mine and my wingman load Durandal, and the other flight within my element I had them load Mk 82 (don't remember which kind tho). I took great care to put items at the airfield (e.g. Ammo dump, Hangar, Control Tower, whatnot) as steerpoints (e.g. 15 through 21). So here's the second problem: despite making those SPs, the second flight in my element (e.g. Falcon 2-3 and Falcon 2-4) missed half of their targets. I had the Fuel Tanks as a SP and ordered them to attack. They "wilco'd" but then missed by a couple hundred yards. I then had that second flight attack the ammo dump and the hangar, which they killed both. (I used technique: select SP then commanded "Attack my target" on all three targets.) They also missed the control tower, too.
    My wingman though, he hit everything spot-on. I targeted the middle runway (the high-value part) and had two SPs, one on each end of the runway, to give to my wingman to kill the medium important parts of the runway. So the wingman hit it exactly (both ends) and the second flight missed obviously large, discernable targets that were backed up by SPs...
    Is this common for AI performance?

      Nice work on fragging your first package! I will say that your mileage will vary a lot with AI. Sometimes they do awesome. sometimes they miss the Mark completely.

    First of all, Thank you for all great tutorials you make. I personally think those are best tutorials avaiable on web. They are very high quality, you seem like a person who knows what he's doing, and I get great value from them.
    At around 15:25 you say "I could give you 4 hour lecture on threats" and such, and I would really like to attend that lecture:)
    Do you think you could make tutorial/guide about this topic?
    Also, I seem to fail to find any tutorials about actuall missions ingame. I know all technical stuff, how to use my aircraft, how to use radio and such, but when I want to play campaign, i often fail because info in briefing is not enough for someone who never flew missions like that. Could you record few tutorials of you accepting random missions while descripting what you are doing, why are you doing that, what you should do such?
    Thanks for great work!

    Very helpful video once again Krause. One question though. I was playing the Balkans campaign the other day and the AI commander kept giving my squadron suicide missions that passed over Kirov cruisers or deep strikes into enemy territory that flew over tons of SAM sites. How would I override the commander and command flights to abort their mission before they got themselves killed? I figured out how to delete strikes before they takeoff but can't seem to figure out how to do it for flights that are already airborne.

  • @HotaruZoku
    @HotaruZoku 10 років тому +1

    Also, the bit about the EF-11. The Falcon engine actually models effects and abilities the player doesn't have direct access to? You can task craft other than F-16s? How do you employ ship specific strengths, mechanically speaking?
    I would Paypal donate for an in depth coverage of those Frag elements.

    • @tanit
      @tanit  10 років тому +3

      It's pretty simple when you add flights to the package you can select non f16 squadrons. Simply select an ef111 squadron and give them a mission type of Ecm. Have them do way point type "jam" for every way point within 60 miles or so of the target. All Sams will become ineffective. Just make sure those little sparkvarks have an escort they are defenseless. They do not need to be on top of the target to be effective.

      I'll be damned. As highly as I already thought about the campaign engine, I'm still even more impressed thanks to your works to learn something as strategically and tactically fascinating as the idea that Aircraft with unique abilities are both player-fraggable, AND their unique abilities are modeled /and/ impact-full.
      I swear. The more of your videos I take in the more I feel like I THOUGHT I knew how to read, but you come in and mention I've been missing every second word for the last 20 years.

    That trick of reading enemy battalion orders is awfully helpful in the planning stage, but I can't imagine how it's supposed to be realistic. Are we meant to assume allied forces have broken all OPFOR communication codes within 6 hours of the war starting?

    • @tanit
      @tanit  10 років тому +2

      It's fairly realistic. You only know what they are doing at any given time and then have to extrapolate their overall maneuver plan.

    Hi Krause, I've got a question... In your Flight plan window, you have only 1 setting for AirSpeed... On my end I have 2 options: CAS(can change) and TAS(can't edit)... TAS which is always higher than CAS... which one should I consider when planning my flights? I've got BMS 4.33.3 btw...
    Thanks...

    Just a note. SA-5 does not work in BMS4 because has wrong guidance values. If yor aspect is bigger than 5-8 deg, even if you fly simiply straight ahead missile never hit you.

    • @tanit
      @tanit  10 років тому

      I've seen people get shot down by an SA-5 before, but it was because they as I said in the video, flew straight and ignored it. Or didn't defend aggressively enough, assuming that simply turning a bit would make the missile lose track.

    Hey Krause. So I was trying to do my first mission and following along with your video... My planes in the 120th do not have the box to check for the HTS and there is no jammer available... Have you modified your campaign or did I set something up wrong? 4.33 Just want to add I selected Rolling Fire. I noticed in Iron Fortress they start with both available, but it looked to me like you were using Rolling Fire too.

    • @tanit
      @tanit  9 років тому

      +RemmyC4 What aircraft is the 120th using in 4.33? The HTS was limited severely in 4.33 - only certain airframes support it.

    I just got one question: Is it possible to use captured or recaptured airbases in the Campaign? And if yes, how can I redeploy a squadron to another Airbase?

    • @tanit
      @tanit  10 років тому

      1. Yes - but don't use an airbase with destroyed runway sections if you're playing with AI, otherwise they will explode on the runway - wait for it to be repaired. 2. You cannot through the 2d, you have to use an external app called Tacedit. There is also an option in your BMS config to allow squadrons to automatically relocate, but you won't have any control over this.

    • @GAFflyer
      @GAFflyer 10 років тому

      Krause
      Hm, i cant find this option in the config. Not under campaign settings nor somewhere else. Looks like i have to find out how Tacedit works and do it manually.

    • @GAFflyer
      @GAFflyer 10 років тому

      Ok, i edited the falcon bms.cfg and added
      "set g_bAirbaseReloc 1"
      so far the campaign is still working but i don't know yet if any squadron will eventually relocate.

    • @tanit
      @tanit  10 років тому

      GAFflyer I believe they only relocate after the airbase gets destroyed - so you don't have a full strength squadron sitting around unable to do work. If you want to hand pick where to relocate stuff, use Tacedit.

    • @tanit

      the SAM sites? No, they are just physical fighting positions for the SAMs to be deployed in. If there's no SAM in there, they are just concrete and harmless.
