Primitive Technology: Lime

- Опубліковано 5 бер 2018
- At the old hut site (the new one being temporarily cut off by flooding) I made lime mortar from the shells of rainforest snails by firing them in a kiln, slaking them in water, mixing them into lime putty. Limestone is basically calcium carbonate (CaCO3). The general source of lime is limestone and various other calcareous minerals, though shells, egg shells and coral are other sources of lime (for more information see video on Corporals Corner channel: • How To Make Roman Conc... or Skillcults channel: • BuildCult Ep.1, Seashe... ). When heated above 840 degrees Celsius, the lime decomposes into calcium oxide (CaO) or Quicklime and releases carbon dioxide (CO2). When water is added to the quicklime it becomes calcium hydroxide Ca (OH)2 or lime putty. From here the calcium hydroxide can then be shaped into a form and allowed to set. Carbon dioxide enters the lime putty as it dries causing it to turn back into calcium carbonate. The new calcium carbonate has then set, remaining solid and water resistant.
In my local geography, calcareous rocks such as limestone are absent leading to a difficulty in acquiring the feed stock for lime making. However, I was still able to make lime by collecting the shells of large terrestrial snails that are native to the rainforest here. The unoccupied shells of these snails were gathered up and stored at the hut. Fire wood was gathered and packed neatly into the kiln. Importantly, the firewood was stacked on top of the grate rather than underneath it in the firebox as is the normal procedure for firing pottery. Using an ordinary updraft pottery kiln in this configuration allows it to reach much higher temperatures than would be possible during normal use. The wood was lit from above and the fire burned down towards the grate. Alternate layers of shells and wood were added on to this burning fuel bed. After adding the last layer of wood to act as a “lid” to prevent heat loss from above I left the kiln to finish on its own, unsupervised. The whole process took about an hour and a half.
When the kiln had cooled down a few hours later, I took out the calcined shells. Not shown in the video was the fact that some shells got so hot, the dirt stuck to them turned into slag and fused to them, possibly with the lime acting a flux lowering its melting point. This extreme heat (+1200 c) should be avoided as the over burnt lime becomes “dead lime”, unable to slake in water. Most shells were still useable though. They were taken out of the kiln and had water added to them. An exothermic reaction then ensued. Heat was produced as the lime quicklime turned into slaked lime. The water heated up creating steam and the shells decomposed into a white paste. The paste was stirred and crushed pottery was added to it as an aggregate (sand is normally used for this, I just had a lot of old pot sherds lying about to dispose of). This lime mortar mixture was then formed into a block shape and left to dry. It took about a week and a half to set as we have had extremely humid, wet weather. The block was observed to have set demonstrating its properties.
What I created is actually lime mortar, typically used for mortaring bricks and tiles together. It’s basically the ‘Glue’ that holds together the building blocks of masonry structures. From my research 20 kg of lime mortar is used on a 1 m square section of brick wall. 5 kg of lime to 15 kg of aggregate (sand, grog etc.) per a 1 m square section of bricks. The shells, though large, are not terribly abundant. A method for finding shells efficiently needs to be made before considering making lime mortar in this fashion. From my experience sand bars in a creek sometimes accumulate snail shells from higher up in the mountains. In these spots, water velocity decreases and shells in the water tend to drop out of the water column. Additionally lime may be partially replaced with ordinary wood ash in mortar without a corresponding decrease in strength. To conclude, making lime in a land without limestone is possible but can be problematic when trying to do so on a large scale.

It's much more informative and entertaining this way
I don't like reading
Btw - For anyone at home: You don't want to touch the burnt shells with your bare hands as they will react chemically with the moisture and the protective oils on your hands.
Lime is a strong base (alkaline) called Calcium hydroxide which is similar to drain cleaner pellets in strength
Which is why it burnt his fingertips in one of his recent videos, that’s for explaining because I was wondering
After watching your videos, I tried to build a furnace in the Appalachian mountains where I frequently camp for two weeks at a time. As you can imagine, there are plenty of woods, and the terrain contains many sizable stones, but even with river access there is little mud or clay. If at all, it is tightly bound between the roots of trees. The main materials there are rock, sand, gravel, wood and water. Thus, i modified the design to a stone furnace with the sparse amount of clay-rich mud as mortar. Got pretty hot, but not quite hot enough to fire the little bit of clay I found. I would definitely try again next spring
if you got water you can extract clay from the ground, did so in the desert.
burn snail shells for a very long time. will surly turn it into quicklime fleck, then just add some water and sand. ua-cam.com/video/G0p8OFvxs8c/v-deo.html

"Making lime from snail shells" was new knowledge for me. Thank you.
The mortar you made is in Turkey; It is called "Horasan Mortar" or "Roman Mortar". It has various formulas and egg white can also be mixed into it. This mortar has been used in archaeological structures for thousands of years and is a stronger type of mortar than concrete.
Over the years it gets harder and becomes just like a rock. However, although it is hard, its biggest feature is that it absorbs the impacts that occur during earthquakes.
That last part is not entirely true. Lime mortar is not stronger or harder than Portland cement, and isn't shock absorbing. That being said, lime cement is kinda self healing, since when water fills cracks, lime dissolves kinda like what is seen in the video and "repairs" the cracks. It's still pretty cool tho
@@juanchetumare Its not the lime that does that. In roman concrete and mortar it is volcanic ash and salt that has this chemical reaction that grows new crystals when it gets wet. There is lime in normal cement aswell. If volcanic ash wasn't the limiting factor worldwide we would all build with roman concrete still. But we don't have it everywhere so that old roman formula is not as good without it for the masses we use it for.
@@YouCountSheepthat would not be the reason we lost the formula.

good one :) But on a serious note, I was thinking about this, and if you think about coast dwellers, they would have piles and piles of shells to use: either found on the beach or as middens from all the shellfish they ate.
You can almost visualise how they must have stumbled on the technology, after having chucked a bunch in the fire after a meal and then coming back after the rain to find no trace of the shells left.

Bored-ass cavemen had to do something.
@@nievillis Maybe they tried to use it like a stone to make a fire place or they tried to burn it. After they were done they poured some water on the fire so that they wouldn't burn the whole place down and after a few days they realised a hard layer of white stuff on the ground.
@@assasinpatates8066 thats seems so logical and human im surprised you could even think of that. Ye the probably did that accidentally and then tried with other stuff. The "except not accidentally" was meant for sometime after, then ppl started experimenting and finding out stuff on purpose
What an epic video! The early Australian settlers, or invaders, or prisoners, (depending upon whom you talk to) used clam shells in a similar manner to create alot of the first structures that were built. They did this due to a lake of limestone in many of the first regions of prison camps. I really enjoyed the show on the channel. Definitely a great episode!
criminals*
@@sa.8208 prisoner =/= criminal (does not equate to). Are a lot of prisoners criminals? Sure, most likely. But a lot are, and historically have been, political dissidents or just people who pissed off someone -important- powerful (like a farmer eloping with a lord's daughter). A _great_ many were also simply unable to pay a debt in time to appease a landlord, grocer, or other money lender, and that could have been as simple as _them_ owing money, so they call in debts. If you can't pay, you're arrested, sent to jail which causes more fees, etc.

I'm always amazed by how well he lights up a fire. This is actually very impressive work. I doubt most people can light a fire with a stick, even if we gave them over an hour.
I've tried it, and it's incredible how much harder it is than it looks lol. I ended up with jelly arms and out of breath and had nothing to show for it except some wood dust and a slight burning smell.
The magic is in the notch you cut in the fireboard. This collects the hot dust together and then smolders. You blow air over it to get it to glow into an ember and then gently drop the ember into a very dry tinder bundle where it can be nursed into a flame.
@@kittywampusdrums4963
Yes, but I've seen a guy who actually tried that method only struggle to light a fire for over 8 hours. The guy was new in survival, and he was trying his on a beach. But still it conveys how much knowledge and exp you need.
This is why even hobbist survivalists normally carry around flint.

I love how this guy doesnt talk... But he is communicating through actions. Something about it being functional. These are some of the best videos I have ever seen.
Turn on close captioning, he communicates using that
If you use wood ash in the mix in addition to your aggregate the lime should be flexible, victorians used to use this mix to sound dampen floors in a house. The additional ash also allows the mix to set under water.
Additionally you should add way less water to your lime and hammer it where you need it, with larger and smaller crushed up tile, dry as possible, and compact it by repeatedly bashing it into where you want it. This is what the Romans did and this is why their cement is incredibly strong.
As someone who doesn't have access to limestone, this video is perfect for me! Thanks for the demonstration!

calcination: CaCO3 = CaO + CO2
reaction of lime and water: CaO + H2O = Ca(OH)2
curing of lime: Ca(OH)2 + CO2 = CaCO3 + H2O
M. Alex mmm yeah yeah, i know some of those words
interesting, so he only used the shells for their calcium carbonate. meaning if he manages to find marble or some actual limestone, this is much easier to produce?
Maybe. But the difficulty is that dolomite or chalk in such a furnace is very difficult to calcinnte, large pieces inside are not calcinnate, and small ones are hard to find in the ashes. Shells of shellfish are thin, easily calcinnate and simply extracted from the ashes.
you lost me at calc...

About 1700 years, this is roman era technology.

I honestly just find this so interesting to watch
Hi, your skills are great. I love watching them
I had no idea you can make it out of snail shells. I learned some new things from these videos
snail shells are a high percentage calcium carbonate. Kinda like egg shells too.
Shells are calcium carbonate... u can use egg shells too...
Yeah when I did this a few years ago we used egg shells and shellfish shells both work pretty well just as long as you wash the shellfish shells first to get rid of the salt
You can use corals.
ShadowWhelp bones should work too
The best thing I read in the comments were to turn on captions. I've watched 50+ vids and just now found out 🙃
I can relate to that
But he only has 47 videos?
@@HomoLegalMedic re watching
You know it. I've watched these things for years and wishing I knew why he was doing certain things. Now I have to watch from the beginning.
most under rated comment award
probably the most useful videos on UA-cam are videos about survival in the wild. seeing all this crazy house around, I want to go away into the woods, and start living like a human being!
Future archaeologists are gonna be confused when they find 2 of the same thing but one is only 300 years old and the other is thousands of years old
I think it should be millions of years old instead of thousands
Well there's still primitive ppl in the amazon and Indian ocean, and they won't have to piece things together like we did likely because we keep so many records
20 years later, Primitive Technology: Empire
Thanks for 450!
MhaZG 100 years later Primitive Technology: Space tower

Gaurav G. Wow..ty
How many years have I gone without doing this? Thank you!
This is amazing and this video alongside the making of Roman concrete is my #1 video
Do u mean CORPORALS CORNER?
What if the reason he never talks is because he doesn't know that he's being filmed?
That has some... terrifying implications.
He doesn't know any language yet.
He does.... he’s commented on videos.
And he also shows his things to the camera.
R/whoosh
You have advanced to the feudal age

Wapiti he made iron before

THE TRUE PRIMITIVE TECHNOLOGY
The other ones are good but just don't reach this man's level of interest, wish this channel posted more often
Yeah not to be mean but I'm getting sick of those cambodian channels putting "primitive technology" in their title on videos that often have nothing to do with primitive techniques, completely lacking any educational/informative comments if not being frauds ("LMAO we found aluminium nuggets on the ground in the forest and now we're going to cast a sword out of it")
Gauthier Schwebel yup. Especially everyone is trying to make some quick bucks off youtube nowadays. I don’t blame them.
the other ones uses chemical formules and mediaval+ tecnology to create primitive tecnology, they are poop
whoever is writing that description truly is dedicated
The one, the only, the best. Love your videos!
It probably gets *harder over time,* as it soaks up the carbon from the air.
Great job Sir !
it does, if I'm correct water also helps further the process

That is pretty small, don't think Obi Wan would go for small game like that.
Spiked Pigeon I know but I’m only 16 wait till I am an adult
His videos must be shown in schools.
I work in a primary school and have shown it to the kids, they love it, but all think its Minecraft... lol
I showed his videos in my secondary school history class for talking about the stone and bronze age.
Why? Do we need that rock?
Rahul Sagar I hope so coz I'm still in school
Well, the better question is: could you live without it?
that "rock" is called cement. you know, the stuff that ancient greek and the roman empire was build with.
throw in sand and you get plaster, mix it with rocks and you get concrete, . swap the lime with bitumen and you get asphalt concrete.
this technique enabled us to build roads, highways, monuments and cities. sure wouldnt hurt kids to know about this "rock", would it?
If I ever found myself back in time and needed to convince people I was a powerful wizard, I would use this method. Snails into exothermic heat reactions? Absolutely magical.
