Brings back loads of memories...R.I.P. Tony McMahon, Box..Ray Mc Bride, Step Dancer...Willie Keane, Set Dancer...not forgetting Gay Byrne...I'm sure there are many more that I'm not familiar with.. Remember watching that show... Never watch the Late Late Show now.
A Fantastic Show, Christmas Eve 1993. I was thinking watching it that if it was today, there would be 6 months advance advertising and promotion etc etc but back then Gay's great shows were without fanfare but on every week.
Excellent, thank you for posting it. It was nice to see the bald lassie tacking 'Danny Boy'. Personally, I prefer a stronger voice for the song, but, bless her, she gave it a good go.
What an amazing line-up, that must have taken months of planning to get all those amazing musicians and dancers together !!! .... set dancing as well x
Trad and Folk are still big and in many ways Country is an offshoot of them (definitely in the States anyway). Country is just ear catching and dance-able to, I think.
soeffingwhat This country music obsession in Ireland' is just an attempt by local radio to kick our heritage in the head. The hat wearing Irish country eejits of today' wouldn't have been wanted on the show seen here. They haven't a clue' about anything that came before them.
I assume this was pre-recorded the week before as I am sure Mr Byrne was not going to be in Studio 1 on Christmas Eve 1993? Christmas Eve was a Thursday in 1993.
@@johnking5174 It was on Friday but every 4th year is a leap year as you know like 1972, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024, 2028 and so on when there is 29 instead of the usual 28 days in February. I would wish that the RTE series Marketplace programmes in full were online.
Everybody having a good time til Sinéad comes on and says to herself "Right. I'm going to do the most depressing version of Danny Boy ever heard, and depress the f@ck out of this audience. Why? Because I can! Its 1993 and I'm Sinéad O' F@cking Connor"
Theses shows should be run again as they were real entertainment.
Would you see a primetime program devoting the entire episode to celebrate Irish music & culture in 2024?

Yeah, but...from 2023, it's so sad.
Tape RECORDER PLAYING BACKWARDS
Donal and Manus bookending the group!
Just not Ireland's best without the dubliners the furys and the Dublin city ramblers and the Wolfe tones
I think Drops of Brandy, The Foxhunter at 1:13:20 is brilliant.
The best part. I still remember this from 1993.
What is the instrument?
