It's kinda funny how Zipp is practically the main character but you see almost no merch of her
I feel like they moved the role of investigating magic from Sunny to Zipp because Zipp almost had nothing to really do in the movie. Her only motives at that time were, "I want to be more than someone who lies about my non-existing powers," or "I also want to help bring back unity," and both of them get resolved at the end.
How to make the other members of the Mane 5 become important active characters, like Zipp, for the overarching plot (that the MYM writers are shockingly underutilizing!):
Sunny - Wasn't she supposed to be closely tied to Argyle's research about the entirety of Equestria's history? Let Sunny be an active protagonist by adding this interesting layer back to her character profile. Make her (at least stereotypically if not more) the walking library of the group, which will directly contribute to Zipp's curiosity. It should be second nature to her to spout out a lot of information she gained from her dad over the years. As the movie establishes her, she should be fired up with her thirst for answers just as Zipp does!
Hitch - He should be, by default, knowledgeable about the history of Maretime Bay, which is linked to the war that caused the division of the three races, and thus to the history of Equestria. The movie establishes him to also be studious like Sunny and Zipp. Allow him to become an active protagonist by making him connected to the knowledge of the history of his own land. And as a Dragon Dad, he should at least be curious about the origins of his own adoptive son by scheduling meet-ups with Sunny and Zipp off-screen (which should add layers of rich intellectual subtext whenever he gets lines of dialogue on-screen).
Izzy - Whatever happened to the thing about Izzy instinctively able to see the inner luminescence of ponies (or you know, their sparkle? which can likely be the same cutie mark sparkle that is later developed for MYM)? Yeah, let this be a thing again. Izzy's profound insights should have already contributed a lot to Zipp's investigations by now. MYM writers need to recalibrate their priorities again by assigning Izzy back into this character quirk she used to have that made her so intriguingly intuitive back in the movie.
Pipp - She needs to be written with an established character arc that will give her more layers than her obsession of social media and self-gratification. By being a crowned princess second to Zipp, she needs to learn that there is more to her than her life in the screen, on the stage, and from her business (Mane Melody). Let her be an active protagonist to important events, rather than a reactive observer to the plot, by making her become emotionally involved with the mysteries. She can team up with Zipp and use her talents to spread awareness of what's to come, becoming this beacon of positivity and hope, instead of being in denial and getting distracted by day-to-day living.
Bonus: Sprout - He's now gifted with the strongest earth pony magic, making him ultimately and obviously the most important earth pony of all! It would be both a missed opportunity and a mistake if MYM somehow sidesteps Sprout and not give him any more importance than what they decided to give him haphazardly, I must assume.

It took WAY too long for that to happen.
In all honesty, i'm hoping that the main protagonist role switches with every new chapter of G5. because in chapters 1 and 2 Zipp was the protagonist but when the specials and next chapters are released hopefully the roles will change back to Sunny or go to Hitch,Pipp or Izzy, but we'll just have to wait and see.
If zipp is a better main protagonist then Sunny she will make princess Twilight sparkle more proud I will do a better job than Sunny.
Zipp's for sure the main protagonist, Sunny's too passive which would be fine if she was learning to be more involved but she's not. In most of the episodes and the special, Zipp's the one interacting with the story in some way. She's the one who gets suspicious of Misty but is still nice enough to apologize if she feels she crossed a line, she's the first to jump into action when there's a mystery, she's the one looking into the evil pony while Sunny barely worries about it. Zipp literally tells Sunny, twice, "Don't worry, I'll figure this out. Just do your thing."
Kinda makes me wish that Zipp was the Alicorn, she'd be investigating her new form along with everything else. Of course, I have a feeling she'd actually question the creepy Alicorn mirror.
Oh yeah... She would be very suspicious of a mirror that seemed to be leading her astray.

Zipp is also the only one who seems to be thinking logically about a lot of things.
In the make your Mark special Zipp acts more like a protagonist than sunny because she literally knew that the magic is starting to die and sunny and the others didn't believe her
Sunny really needs a mentor. Too bad the movie crew didn't think of that when they nuked Equestria completely and even killed off her dad. Now the only mentor she has left is Opaline...
You highlighted why Zipp is my favorite character. Even from the movie. I liked her personality and she really stood out to me. The other mares were very similar to me. Hitch was my second-fav, but they drastically changed his personality after the movie. I noticed that, for the main character, Sunny does surprisingly little. between MYM and even TYT, I kind of forget she exists half the time. There is nothing wrong with giving the spotlight to another pony for an episode or 2. Gen 4 did that very well. We got to learn more about the other mane 6, while still keeping Twilight at the focal point. I thing Gen 5 doesn't have any direction in the first place. Outside the movie, there has been very little plot. Even Opaline's schemes feel like filler. It's easy to see Zipp as the main character because, as you said, she is the only one who has had anything to do. I don't mind making Sunny the main, but she needs to actually do something. She should be the one to want to know more about the magic, as you said. She doesn't seemt o care at all and the little she does do is fairly inconsequential. The overall gen is pretty bad, though, so I don't see any of this getting better.
Let's not forget that when they inadvertently play a message from Twilight Sparkle, the hero of what they know as Ancient Equestria, about an ominous threat to the Crystals and magic, Zipp is the one who becomes invested in what she was talking about and wants to find an answer to the question about her ominous warning (though we, the viewers, already know well it's Opaline). What does *Sunny* do after seeing her childhood idol, the pony whom she owned a figurine of (along with the other Council of Friendship members) and played with in her extra-idealistic youth, the icon of unity whose legacy her late dad tried to preserve when she and that era had become little more than a foal's fairy tale to the rest of modern Equestria? She goes on with her life and personal pursuits like it never happened. They turned Sunny into that "this is fine" meme, and nobody in-universe has said anything about it. What happened to the mare from A New Generation who liked asking questions and, though pushy about her ideals, took the restoration and preservation of her country's glory years seriously?
In just that one moment from Make Your Mark Chapter 1, they made her look as punchable as Late-FIM!Twilight. Did they *have* to make her sound like a valley girl, in addition to brushing off Zipp's worries about the stability of the Crystals that *just* reactivated after *generations* of bitter separation?
Sunny's flaw should be she is so dedicated to unity she might be pushy and bossy. And the others have to calm her down.
I like Zipp, I really do. But the crowning of Zipp as our protagonist at the cost of Sunny's agency... it's just really sad to me.
I want Zipp to be the main protagonist. It actually makes a good contrast with Opaline who is all about "Alicorns should rule" and is more focused on Summy despite Sunny not really being much of a threat- even while recognizing Zipp as her most aware and intelligent opponent.
Well,I think we all can agree on this cuz look how much screen time she's getting and being the one who's solving mysteries!! Honestly I am a bit of a detective myself. And that would be amazing for me if she is THE main protagonist!!
Wait what if Hasbro is not even realizing that Zipp's getting more screen time or what if Hasbro is planning to make Zipp the main protagoniet!!!
Actually my theories are stupid theories. And I'm watching this vid again bcz it makes sense. And it is soooooooo true that Sunny barely pays attention to any mysteries!!!
In the comics the characters are better, despite the fact that Zipp is the detective, if they make it look like Sunny is the leader and give her more importance, Zipp is the voice of reason for the group, but she does not overshadow Sunny as she does in the serie. I think it's more the problem of the writers, the 5 are the protagonists, but they don't know how to balance them well, which makes Zipp look like the real protagonist. Also, I think they gave her the best, they gave her the best of Rainbow Dash combined with Applejack and Twilight, while Sunny got... nothing. Even though Zipp is the smartest, the voice of reason, Sunny is the leader, the one who holds everyone together and guides them, that's how I see it, but I don't see them show it on the show. I think the latter will change eventually, they will have to show that Zipp can be a good queen, but for that, she has to prove to be a good leader. I don't understand the writers' plans, and I doubt they have one...
It seems like Sunny, Zipp and Hitch are the main characters. They make up a Freudian Trio, but with a twist:
Zipp is logical and calculating, but is also down for some rule-breaking. She's like a Chaotic Spock.
Hitch is surprisingly emotional and spontaneous, but also about following the rules. He's like a Lawful McCoy.
And then Sunny has to balance the two. She's The Kirk.

I think the writers did not plan out more of an arc for Sunny or even Izzy.

TYT came first, dude. The Bright House was built by the first episode of Tell Your Tale. The episode was centered around Pipp and Zipp moving from The Pegasus Enclave to Maretime Bay. I can not tell you where the MYMch1 Intersected. That "special" was a mess.
As it stands now, I think you're right.
And Other than Finder's Keepers eggs never got to the point of buying much MLP merch, but if a Detective Zip with all those gadgets gets released I just might have to get one!
Secretly Misty is the protagonist of G5. We just have yet to see it.
I mean, I doubt she will stay comfortably under Opalines hoof for long.
She is ideal to fill Twilights roll in the sense that she knows nothing about friendship and thus the most room to grow and truly appreciate it and do what she can to embrace what friendship really is.
She's the future queen and has quality to be a good ruler in the future. She's brave, intelligent, caring, and good at leadership
What if later in the show Zipp becomes an Alicorn and the ruler of Equestria? Is Queen Haven only Queen of Zephyr Heights or does she have power over the other towns of Equestria?
I wouldn't mind if Zipp says a pegasus, though I do have to wonder if a pony will ever transform into a true alicorn. And if this happens, does Celestia appear in that same realm that Twilight saw her when she became an alicorn? Does this "spell" still function this far into the future after magic was ripped out of reach?

Yeah, from what I've seen the least developed pony in the movie is now the focus of the entire series. I should have known Hasbro was going to buck it up with an Earth Pony protag. Pity, that was the one thing that was different about this cast. But yeah, Zipp is definitely not the Dash clone I thought she would be, and that's a good thing. I just wish Sunny and Hitch weren't both such huge disapointments.
Is it possible that in next chapters other caracter will become "main protagonists" ? :3
Will we ever see a true alicorn (aside from Opaline) in G5? Would this pony see Celestia during this transformation?
Well, this didn't age well. Partly because the writers could not properly craft a story around her detective attributes. And partly because they gave her no further development beyond Princess and amateur investigator.
Now only Misty matters. All other ponies are her supporting cast. 🤔

Anyone Remember a year ago when we thought Zipp was gonna be a Rainbow Dash 2.0?
I thought I wasn't gonna like Zipp when I first saw images of her, but she ended up being my favorite character.I just wish she wasn't stuck with mid writing.
While I can't deny that Zipp has the greater hunger for knowledge and experience that potential makes her a great ruler and saviour for Equestria, I have a feeling that Izzy's holding back and waiting for the right moment to show ponies what a big great help she can really be. Hitch seems to follow his heart more than his head, which isn't the best approach, but acceptable. Pipp is popular, but a bit out of her depth when it comes to pretty dangerous situations. Sunny seems on the sunnyside down seeing as she's pretty lax when it comes to situations she dismisses as not so bad.
I have a feeling that either Izzy or Sunny are going to befriend Misty first. Personally, I'd prefer the former.

Zipp was the only pony I saw at the beginning of make your mark and tell your tale does that mean she's gonna the main protagonist in the series instead of Sunny?😮 that's sad then I'll never get to see Sunny again and maybe Sunny won't be the main protagonist anymore either.😢

No offense, but I mainly think that they should’ve made her the main protagonist of the show because she’s the only one that takes things seriously and she investigates stuff. I think she was the one that supposed to be an à la and also she may not be into those woolly duties, but at least she’s passionate Not to be rude but sunny she barely studies about magic. She can’t even research about her ailcorn magic
Yeah... Dont worry... Hitch is evidently not the protagonist and, i would dare to say, that he could almost fit like a secondary character even whilt being part of the mane 6...
The truth is, I also love Zipp and currently if they give it more development and I think it has a lot of potential and I hope that little by little it will explain its past because I find it very interesting
This reminds me of Il Neige's review of Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie where he felt that Kaiba was being more of a main character than Yugi.

Sunny was supposed be be explorer, going on adventures to uncover ancient secrets... But looks like because Zipp's VA is more famous, Netflix intervened and made her the new protagonist.
