- A deep dive into some of the most iconic chord shapes and sounds from the Japanese Math Rock band TOE. This video will teach you shapes, while also offering music theory analysis to explain exactly how the chords are built and their role in a key structure. Moreover, I also get into analyzing a few TOE chord progressions. At the end of the video, I do an in-depth breakdown of what my takeaways are after having transcribed and explored their chord sounds. Hope you enjoy!

I love toe. The band is great too
haha agreed.
💀
I love that they have not been afraid to use the same chord voicings to write new songs over their career. For example the Desert of Human and Kodoku No Hatsumei use the same chord shape, just the rhythm and key are different. It's been helpful to me because I used to be afraid of writing multiple songs using similar chords, which just made it immensely harder to write.
toe helped me realize that thinking in such a way is a fallacy. Chord shapes and progressions are only a piece of the pie and should be treated as such. They are just so damn good at songwriting.
gotta love it when emo/math rock bands write in standard tuning
Same here, that being said. Take some of these with a grain of salt as they are transcriptions. The pitches are correct but the way that TOE plays the notes could be a little different. At the very least its a cool realization that for the most part, any thing can be played in any tuning, it just takes a bit of rejigging and arranging.
its always extremely impressive to me, especially when they can do quick and amazing riffs.
two moons is written in EG#BF#A#D#, idk about others
@@het7644 close, but change the A# to a B. Should be: E Ab B Gb B Eb
It's actually just the "Never Meant" tuning, F A C G C E, but tuned down a half step. I worked it out a while ago for a cover on my channel (only thing still there actually). Tuning to A# would require a long finger stretch during the chorus to hit the correct note. When I was learning it I realized that tuning to B allows you to utilize more open strings and makes the song significantly easier to play. Then I went looking for live videos... they're definitely not making the long stretches that A# would require.
Love love love TOE! thanks so much for breaking down these chords. Gonna definitely try experimenting with them later. Would you also consider doing breakdowns for other japanese math rock bands? Tricot is one of my favorite bands and would love to see you break down some of their songs.
Yo happy to! No problem, it was a very interesting and eye opening experience for my self too, so I love doing these analysis and transcription videos. I would definitely do more Japanese Math Rock stuff, maybe something on Uchu Conbini next as they are my favourite Japanese group. Tricot is something I could explore down the line too though.
@@TrevorWongMusic i love Uchu Conbini, their guitarist actually created a new band with is called JYOCHO and has a beautiful tone, also Daijiro Nakagawa himself started making solo albums and songwriting for anime openings and ost, and some songs are very cool too, would love to see transcriptions for some never transcribed songs from him, and your opinion overall
Toe is one of the greatest thing that happend in my life.... this video hits in the heart. Thank you mate!
toe is my favourite band in this genre !!!
Yeah Toe is incredible for sure!
This just made me appreciate the band more, please do more toe video if you can ! and thanks for doing this
Toe is the best math rock band out there. Very happy to have their stuff on vinyl. Thanks for the video ❤
What an epic video Trevor! I love the style, format, and content. Would love to see some more breakdowns of your favorite bands
Thanks so much! Definitely been a while since I've gotten into one this long. Will definitely be doing more breakdowns and transcriptions of bands!
recently got my first guitar, cant wait to learn thank you!
love them! covet, elephant gym, piglet, a picture of her, speed of sound in seawater, zoo strategies are all favorites of mine as well
I'm so glad you're still making lessons, I love the way you play
Love toe so much, they always have interesting minor chord progressions that still sound twinkly
Trevor... Thank you for making this and the toe's riffs video. It is amazing. Thank you!!!!
I love this channel. All of your videos are amazing, always with very good information and very little clutter. Your channel is one of the best for actually learning and progressing on guitar at my level. My only complaint is that your little subscription banner in the bottom right hand corner frequently obscures your tablature, especially if I'm pausing to get a really good glance. I can eventually pause and start a few times to see what I'm missing, but it's really frustrating.
Stoked to see this video. Love this band and your tutorials!
Makes me super happy to hear, definitely with you on the TOE fandom part haha and thanks for the support on the video. Much appreciated!
The omission of root/tonic tones in major chord voicings in order to play off the 3rd-based minor chord in the arpeggio, especially as a borrowed chord that falls back to the IV chord that introduces the original tonic (Long Tomorrow: C#min/Amaj7 -> Dadd9), is super interesting.
A godsend. I love toe, one of my favorite bands, for sure
Thank you for this. Love this band. Please do more of Toe if you can.

Toe is the best
Oh, 🤮. Math rock. So sterile and instantly old.
if you're ever hung up on pronunciation, a friend told me to
just split it up by vowels into 2/3 letter syllables and you should be fine
eg: Mu/kou. Gi/shi Mi/ru Yu/me.
can't help you with the accent, but you're doing better than I!
