I climbed onto our roof when I was 2 and fell. When I got home from hospital I went to the piano and played songs I was hearing on the radio. On a family holiday a few years later I was given a guitar and entered the Caravan Park talent quest a few days later and won. By the end of High School I taught myself to play 6 more instruments. But I was a loner and people considered my weird. Kids made fun of me, and I lashed out. Even though I could solve mathematical problems instantaneously, I failed Maths because I couldn't show how I got my answers. I was sent to a Child Psychiatrist before Autism was a diagnosis - instead, I was labelled with a Personality Disorder and spent years of my childhood zonked out on pentabarbitone - a pretty strong barbituate for a little kid. But years later, it worked itself out. I became a Piano Bar entertainer, then later, a Music Teacher which I love ... and finally, the true diagnosis was given - I was told I had Savantism - and medication was no longer necessary.
Damn, i wish i can be smart at maths or some other stuff to make my family proud while the other hand we are suffering financial problem with me can't do a single decimal word problem.

@@joefrayling9263 would reccomend for people to consider learning how to read it is a gift. My explanation there will be an item or object of matter and speed read it it helps with your mind or else we can go insane stacking things knowing with no thought hard to explain.... I hate myself

I was diagnosed with ASD and GDD at age 2. In grade 6, I chose the trombone after there were too many euphonium players because I did not want to play the flute (my mom played it when she was younger).
During that year, I hated the trombone because I was forced to have private lessons with a community band director.
The next following year, I found the community band that I joined, so I stayed on the trombone. I saw my group of friends in a higher level band, so I pushed myself to be in that band. In music lessons, and I was pushed.
I did a jazz camp and I really liked the trombone instructor, so I was put into lessons with him through the conservatory from grade 8 until grade 12.
I’m now going into my 3rd year of music at my local university, still having lessons with the same trombone instructor. People have told me I can play really really good, but I have little to no self-esteem.

Diagnosed with ASD, never played an instrument growing up, even took guitar lessons but was never that interested it wasn’t until I was 23 and a mate gave me a Takamine he picked up from a garage sale, I learnt the c cord and could play an improvised melody straight away, to me it feels like I’m playing super Mario running along hitting every jump perfectly
Same tho i am not autistic My mum forced me to learn piano never enjoyed it never cared abt it got interested in ukulele years later and tho i am not that great of a player but playing it just came so naturally to me, just learnt the chords and that was enough, i realised i absolutely love string instruments.

There is one man who was recently come in lite in Nepal named Bijaya Shahi. He could read the book with thousands of page within hour and can memorize everything. When he was asked to write the sentence in random page number of book he reads he will write exactly everything.

Those are two independent abilities. I know a girl who sings perfectly on pitch all the time, but doesn't have a perfect pitch and I know one, who has it (she knows a pitch of the played note or anything that makes sound in less than a second), but she barely sings on pitch and she's of course completely aware of it.
Oh my word. I didn't know how rare my gift was. I'm Autistic, and can sing a completely new piece of classical music by simple ' intuition '. Like my brain knows the likelihood of what the next note will be. I learned to follow the notation known as neumes when I was being prepared for school aged 4. I sang the Latin Mass every Sunday in the church choir from the age of 10' and I played the violin but although I can read music it means nothing to me until I hear it played by someone else first. I have synaesthesia so listening to words is exhausting because I see pictures of all the shapes and colours and sometimes quirky images of certain phrases.
I'm so grateful to be autistic. ......4 of my 6 grandchildren are autistic too, and 3 of them ...girls...have perfect pitch.

If youve ever taken an IQ test, you realize right away its a piss poor way to test someones intelligence. If you spend 15 minutes studying the format of the test and its answers, you can easily become a genius.

My older brother’s IQ was measured at over 160 in high school. He skipped 2 1/2 years college taking advance standing exams and was in Mensa. I was 20 points behind him but observing what a misfit he was I taught myself to dumb down. I’ve been happy and content ever since. It’s true “There’s a thin line between genius and idiots.” I’d rather be on the low end.

Wondering if the talent is genetic, if they have tried DNA testing then followed it with geneaology study of their family to see if the gemetics may go back to a famous musician in the family tree? I think that would be a very interesting study to do.

Seems to be parts of the brain not normally active are activated in these people, through disability or injury the brain in compensating for the injury uses parts of the brain that are not normally used.
But why are they not used? How can we learn to stimulate these parts of the brain to work without injury/disability?

I have savant syndrome and I am proud of it.
Perhaps it is way past time instead of those that just want to label others for their weaknesses which everyone has it is instead time we find out what are their strengths in life we all have those as well. Labeling others in a bad way is wrong. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Perhaps society as a whole would be better served treating others with kindness and care and help them find their strengths.❤

Is it a possible Interpretation that the non-verbal RHS acts like a “Governor” to the math or memory sections of the LHS and that acquired savants have just had their Governor/limiters damaged allowing that particular feature to run (dangerously?) High?
I have savant syndrome. But I hate math I will start crying if I get into it ugh.... hopefully the coming generations will adapt better to environmental conditioning of society. Even better with its structure to actually fill the need to understand

I think we all know when we're observing the marvel of a human soul. "Genetic memory?" That's just a fancy term for intuitive genius...it pretends to "play dumb" about the special grant of knowledge our Maker generously endows every one of His children with (yes, even the intelligent instincts accorded EVERY ONE of His creatures). Such gifts don't derive from prior experience; therefore, they cannot be "memory". It is godlike aptitude, a ready respect and appreciation for Divine possessions, and a whole-hearted will to share the beauties of His 'Garden' without a covetous greed to take them from Him and our neighbor.
The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth: “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
so a genius is someone who is doing well at academics , he remembers all the background knowledge/domain-specific knowledge and thus understands comprehend everything well, is that what you mean by a genius ? i think i've met countless geniuses throught my life , listened to some work of increadable human beings , read some cool stuff , so what about those ? are they not geniuses enough ?
Everyone is a genius , everyone can be a genius. But to be a genius you need to go through a process(es) and most people hate the process so they don't bother.
1 in 10 With Autism are Savants? Well I've known at least 70 with Autism but would not say I've known any, so I think it's more rare than that. Possibly MUCH more rare.

Do we all have the potential for this kind of greatness? The answer is yes and no. I'm not educated but I'm a high-functioning autistic. I guess you would say Asperger's. So hear me out and don't shut me down just because I talk about God. We use about 10% of our brains. When God created Adam and Eve we were perfect and magnificent and we were able to use all of the brain. But man ate of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of Good and evil against God's directions. And when man sinned we lost our ability to live forever, to fully communicate with God and our abilities diminished. You could say we got dumber and dumber.
The good news is that through Christ we will one day we will have all of that redeemed.

Yeah there are different kinds of savants. I can't remember shit, generally speaking. But there are some things. I not only remember. Somehow. I already knew. Before I knew.
I had a boatload of health issues when I was, a toddlers age. There was a monumental change and difference. At 7 years of age. When I had my tonsils and adenoids removed. When I came to. I freaked out. Quietly without anybody knowing. I didn't quite feel like myself upon, awakening. But I still faltered. With numerous health conditions. That just plagued me. Laid me out. Time and time again. In, incredible, pain, discomfort, personal accidents. Very con founding.
But then nearly 40 years later. I found out why. And brain surgery made a big difference.. I think I've been back, since then? If it's still actually me? I'm not so certain? I might be the alternate me? If you were to see a copy of my, CD-ROM, MRI. Prior to brain surgery. You'd know why. It's not that of a living breathing functioning, human being. Oh but, it's my brain. Oh dear? It's really bad. You don't need to be a doctor. To see how bad it truly is.
And so since finding that out about 18 years ago. And trying to recover ever since. Things do keep happening. In recent years. That makes me believe. I am actually in a coma. In a hospital bed. Hooked up to, tubes and monitors. And required 24/7/365 care. As I'm vegetative and in a coma. And I think I might be there? Nothing makes any sense anymore. Everything is like a bad science-fiction movie. And I like science fiction. But I don't like Donald Trump science-fiction. I'm tired of this rerun. I would like us to be on a Different Star, Trek. Someone other than Taylor Swift. And Donald Trump.
My MRI is so horrific. The neurologist and neurosurgeon told me. They don't usually talk to people like me. Because people like me wouldn't be able to comprehend or understand anything and would be largely vegetative already. And they said. We have even less understanding. How you are conversing with us, intelligently.
So I have a copy of my MRI on CD-ROM. And I also look at it in, amazement. And so? Because I'm an excellent, Technical Electronic Troubleshooter. I can only surmise. That my brain damage is so bad. That. I don't know. That I'm supposed to be brain-damaged? And I just carry on. Do my work. And I don't know how? The damages really that bad. So?
I must be only thinking with my brainstem? And it offers up an IQ of over 150. So I've got a smart brainstem. I might just be On, Auto Pilot? Maybe I only have instinct? But I shower regularly. And I use deodorant. I don't need to tie my shoes. As down here in central Texas. It's mostly only flip-flops for me. I don't have to tie those. As I only know how to, Thai restaurant.
It might be brain damage. Yes. Yes I can feel it. Ouch! I felt the wrong spot. Brain Stems Work!

Sorry, but I'm not that impressed by this guy's playing. First of all, even when he was playing along with the newly created music in real time, it was essentially the same kind of stuff that he'd been playing over and over before, i.e. hymn-like chord progressions of similar phrase length, etc., and he isn't playing with any other dynamic than fff and thumping out a simple pattern of a bass (root (⁸va) followed with its 2nd and/or 3rd inversions), and in and an awful oom-pa-pa way, (or something similar for in 4/4).
And it hasn't any phrasing, musicality or beauty to it either. I have never heard a savant (formerly idiot-savant)*¹ person actually play well, although I do give them credit for their remarkable memory and assimilation. They hold their knowledge very well and have a wide repertoire, however they employ the same style. There is great mystery in how the are able to repeat something that they have only once heard, and how they come to understand it so quickly but there are mistakes which primarily lay people gloss over that have to be taken into account too, if we are to truly understand this phenomenon. The savants are mysterious and fascinating, but given the limitations that I have noted here, and there are more, (another, e.g. is excess pedal use), they don't possess any sort of magical force that can interest me as it appears to have done with most of the people who have left their impressions in the comments.
Do you think for example, that this person or those like him (and without physical problems with their hands), could get through a Beethoven piano sonata, or concerto?? On hearing it once?? Ten times?? I don't think so. They are, for the most part, just regurgitating a lot of standards, fairly simple and very predictable music and, perhaps most noteworthy, Popular!! And I don't think it's really up to them as much as it's their handlers who dictate the show. They have taken these people and turned them into trained seals, and that is sad. I am more interested in people who are of normal or higher intelligence who have sustained injury to the brain and are gifted with new abilities which they hadn't had a hint of before, and still retained their previous abilities as well. This would appear to be more taxing on the brain where clearly, with the savant, there is this one talent that seems in place to make up for the very low intelligence that they present with. That is what it looks like, anyway, and I wonder if it is this or something else. That is where my interest lies.
This is just my humble opinion and I am curious if anyone else understands or agrees.
* 1. The ones who have decided which words are too upsetting to some ave changed this term without it with one that is equally useful. I see the term "idiot-savant" (pronounced ee-dee-oh sah-vahnt), as descriptive of a person who had had low intelligence since (and before ?) birth yet has been gifted with artistic abilities at a level beyond the norm for their peers of average or better intelligence as opposed to those of average or above intelligence who have acquired their hither to absent abilities by brain injury and keep all of their previous skills and abilities. This is how I interpreted this word, and there's a good chance that I am wrong, but I did see it as a useful phrase. I know that political correction has got its teeth into this, as it does, so I don't mind using simply, "savant". Thank you for reading this.
