    I guess this is my sign to give the Lane dresser that’s been in my garage for 10 months a gentle restoration! Thanks!😊

      @@ivylane-homeHi Lisa, I’ve just rewatched this video as I’m ready to give my Lane dresser a gentle refinish. Do you think other brands of gel stains (Minwax, etc) would work the same way? I would think so, but I don’t usually use gel stain, so I’m not as familiar. Thanks!

    • @ivylane-home
      @ivylane-home  3 місяці тому +1

      @@pfles1 I've used Varathane brand and I assume Minwax gel stain would work the same too.

      @@ivylane-home So I finally did a gentle restoration on a Lane dresser from the Rhythm series. I purchased for $30, put about $30 in supplies and 4 hours in time (needed to patch and color match a bit of veneer.) I sold it for $400 within 24 hours of posting. I would say that was a win for me. Thank you for sharing your gentle restore method!

    Gorgeous! ❤Every time I watch you go through all that work to sand and stain I’m like.. no way! But then the finished product is so gorgeous!! I am surprised at how cheaply made these name brand furniture pieces are with particle board and veneer instead of wood

      That’s the magic of gel stain! 🤩 Right, I was so surprised the first time I worked on one. They are so iconic. That veneer graining though, 👌🏼

    I just love learning all these techniques from you! This one was great because of all the little fixes that needed to be done…these types of pieces just need a little love & repairing shouldn’t deter anyone from trying a light restoration! It’s perfect learning experience! Beautiful! 🦋

    Thank you so much for showing us the time it takes and the breakdown. Fascinating to see how you did this. I’m always concerned that my sanding might go too deep in an area and then the stain will be blotchy but you really managed it beautifully.

    • @ivylane-home
      @ivylane-home  4 місяці тому

      I had to do a couple coats on that one area on top and then a final coat over the whole top evened it all out. Sometimes it just takes some experimenting. I’ve tried toning on a piece and it just didn’t work so I had to strip it. It’s worth trying though! 😊🙌🏼

    This piece looks incredible!! Beautiful work, as always Lisa! I just scored an entire campaign bedroom set that I think will be a perfect candidate for your gentle restoration process. I’ve always done a complete sand down to raw for a refinish project, so I’m kinda excited to try this method and see if I can boost my profit margin by cutting the time down (significantly) with this method!

    This is such a helpful video! I had no idea that the gel stain would cover the scratch that was on the top. If there was a gouge, would you fill first, then stain, then use the touchup crayon sticks? Do the sticks fill in little dents and does the sealer make it harden? Love these campaign dresser videos!

    • @ivylane-home
      @ivylane-home  5 місяців тому

      Well, gouges are a different story. It depends on where it is. On this piece, I had missing veneer on the back bottoms, so I filled them with the epoxy and then used the Blendal sticks. If the gouges were in a more prominent spot, I wouldn't try this method. I would do a full restoration. Mohawk makes fill sticks and Blendal sticks. The fill sticks will fill the dents and the Blendal sticks are for blending the repair and the sealer just seals the wax so you can apply a topcoat. You could also try steaming out dents. That works too!

    Wow, what a difference. It looks great! Some friends gave me a beautiful antique round table that I planned to gently restore with gel stain. The problem is there is a slight musty smell that cleaning is not getting rid of. Can I spray shellac after I scuff sand prior to the gel stain?

    • @KarenBoris
      @KarenBoris 5 місяців тому

      That is a great idea for a video! How to get rid of some of the funky smells these old pieces have. Had one from a smokers house 😝It was SO hard to neutralize that smell even with blocking shellac primer. I now make sure pieces are from a smoke free home. But sometimes the musty smell is off putting too

    • @ivylane-home
      @ivylane-home  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes, shellac can go under gel stain and it would be great to block the odors. You can even spray it on the underside of the table too. I had a musty dresser once, and I took out all the drawers and sprayed the entire interior with shellac to seal it. It worked great!

    Only three hours? WOW. Looks great.
    I looked into Etsy and I could not figure you how to sell just locally. Its more complicated than EBay. Is that even an opion? I am not going to ship furniture. Screw that.

      Yep, I love these types of flips.
      Etsy isn’t really setup for local selling. You can only put it in the description, but people invariably don’t read the description 😬
