That control and voicing is most literally some of the most enlightening stuff to be heard, especially live. His recordings are excellent, and his performances are passionate. Well done Mr. Lewis.
Such honest and beautiful playing. The C# major before the return of the A theme around is pure magic. Perhaps this piece can also be described the way Jean Luc Goddard described Au Hasard Balthazar, the magnificent Bresson film that uses this very piece as soundtrack: "the world in an hour an a half." The world in 40 minutes (the entire D959, that would be)
Beautifully played, - poise, restrained intensity, & every nuance brought out. Reminds one - if one ever needed it - of Schubert’s great empathy with human sorrow.
I really appreciate the fact that music allows for subtle (sometimes not so subtle) differences in performance that allow us to hear from a different angle. Brendel's and Lewis' approach to this piece couldn't be more different, and yet I find each satisfying in its own way.
Paul Lewis plays with amazing lightness and grace. The Andantino movement is a pleasant simple melody. It is uplifting and absolute a listenable Sonata.
No ideas on the sheet music... I'm always amazed how these pianists come in and play 30 or 40 minutes of music with no sheet music. Incredible talent and work ethic.
I cant post links. Go to google. Search "Schubert A Major Sonata Sheet Music" Take the top search result starting with an adress imslp something-something. It should take you to the Sonata. Scroll down and click on the "Complete Score" It should take you to a pdf of the entire sonata. Go to page 11. Ive played this piece 10 years ago when I had a piano. Amazing piece. Saddest thing ever made.

I can't get over this. Absolutely beautiful! Making it my next project.
He just knocks on the surface and the essence manifests by itself. This is seamless performance.
