The temptation of the box is always there. But trust Prof when he reminds us to buy SINGLES
It's the logical choice if you want a particular card instead of just stuff to sell + bulk
That happening to me destroyed my temptation forever.
Yeah i buy singles for decks and just crack packs purely for fun
but what about my paper crack loot box addiction?
I'm a collector first and a player second. As much as I want those cards, nothing will ever be the same as pulling it with my own two hands
Fetch lands are fetch lands, but a booster box could contain anything! It could even contain fetch lands, you know how much you want those!
Then let's just --
@@gunsunnuva8346 We'll take the box!
Which futurama episode is this from?
Family guy actually.
@@sixzerotwoyeah like someone else said it's family guy..early one of the first 3 seasons iirc. Don't remember the exact episode but the bit is peter goes to a time share presentation and the rewards for sitting through it was a boat or a mystery box. So of course he picks the box because "a mystery box could be anything even a boat!"
I’ve applied “buy singles” to every aspect of my life, and now my mail-order bride is arriving shortly.
My hero
How does this only have 20 likes
That's the spirit.
Yah! But does she come with Fetch Lands?
I'm glad you picked a single, else that might have gotten messy.
This is my thought process when buying booster boxes. Then I pull absolutely nothing and become sad for a while.
Congratulations you’ve just fostered a gambling addiction 😊
And after a few minutes you're hyped up for getting some more boosters to open. 😂
Which is why you really should not purchase booster boxes for any reason other than to draft with friends. Never chase cards from packs, always buy singles.
Aw, sorry that you're feeling down. It's nothing like the thrill of opening another box can't fix 😈
Sad and angry at oneself.
I love tappy. She brings that mtg goblin energy that we all need.
Always go for singles. There are plenty of them in your area.
Nope
@@heraldofv3379 They can't wait to chat with you though!
Or on TCG player?? Why would you buy at a store for 50% mark up
@@LightBender777 But, much like the singles in my area, a lot of the singles on TCGPlayer are Heavily Played.
Hey-o.
Hot singles in your area? :P
Even if you don't get what you want, opening up a box every now and then is just fun
Sometimes you get stuff you wouldn't have bought normally and then end up finding something new you like, too. I'll buy a set booster box of a set if I like the whole set just for the experience. But often I'll still do singles
During All Will Be One, main things I wanted were Tyrannex Rex, Ichor Moon Gauntlet, and the Dominus cycle. Got the first two and none of the dominus but I did pull a Elesh Norn and Obliterator. After that, just getting singles for March of the Machine since mainly need specific cards for commander and not a crap ton of stuff I won't be using.
Every new magic player should watch this. This is like "just say no" but actually effective
He's done the math, and numbers don't lie, and they spell "Buy Singles" at your local game store.
Here's a challenge for every booster gamblers / addicts. Make a deck with 93 lands and 7 treasure tokens. Shuffle them and try to draw all 7 treasures in opening hand (repeatable). If you succeed, you can buy the box / booster you want. If you don't then just buy singles. Might save you some thoughts spending money on gacha cards.
"gacha card"
Oh millenial branding everything with their buzzword. Mtg predate gacha.
That's a 7% chance right?
@@hyoroemongaming569pretty sure gacha has been around in japan, where gacha is from, for longer than the game... Think before you speak
@@jingizrPretty sure that's a 7% to draw a single treasure when you draw a card. To draw all seven would be 7/100 * 6/99 * 5/98 * 4/97 * 3/96 * 2/95 * 1/94. Because I don't care to do the actual math, I'll assume the deck stays 100 cards and that gives an answer of about 5/100000000000. That's pretty unlikely. This is a good tip to save money. Assuming that I did the math right.
@@hyoroemongaming569 Gacha has been a thing in Japan since the '60s, MTG has only been around since the early '90s
I like boxes for the novelty of opening packs. Even if there is only a few things I want in the set, I just need to satisfy that pack opening itch.
Amen to that, brother. I like the feel of getting something cool by chance as opposed to buying it outright. Plus, I don't really worry about getting a playset because I just swap cards based on the deck I'm using.
my wisdom: buy singles you need, open boxes for fun
My draft booster box of Modern Horizons 2 only had one single fetchland. But it did happen to be a Misty Rainforest. Conversely, my set booster display of Modern Horizons 2 had all fetchies *except* for Misty Rainforest. But that retro foil Scalding Tarn made up for it.
Well you know, if you break into the store at 2am, you can get a playset of the fetch lands, and it's like you didn't even pay for them! :)
Good 'ole five finger discount
You don't buy the box to get what you want. You buy the box cause you love the chase!
I try to stick to buy only single, but sometimes there is a set where i just want everything. That's why i bought a box of ikoria when it came out, because i love mutate. Then i got the singles that i missed.
Actually did this - and it worked out to my surprise. Thanks to Ragavan and the new elementals.
It's always cheaper to buy specific cards.
I buy boxes when they release, I like cracking packs, I like to build from what I manage to pull, and sometimes I get some crazy results, like two portal to phyrexia in the same box, damn near paying for a display by themselves
This is my favorite Professor video ever
I just came here to appreciate the Bolt Thrower shirt, but the sketch too.
Just getting into MtG and seeing everyone I know have storage totes FULL of cards makes more sense now
Love the tappy clappy
When is she back on shuffle up and play? She is still undefeated!
My life trying to get that one card I want from a set, repeatedly failing to justify biting the bullet up front for that one card, and ending up tripling the cost on the back end over time. ❤
Funny thing, my first box I bought for cracking Packs was a MH2 Set booster box and I got 5 fetches (one old border foil) 1 Ragavan and two incarnations (endruance and grief) and a bunch of other stuff I used for building kitchentable modern decks to play with friends. Never touched a Set box again since I know this was a one time thing. Besg thing you can do with boxes is buying a draft display and saving it to draft later or use the boosters for a chaos draft
Last night at the shop a regular was looking at the last kamigawa boosters and said "buy singles, buy singles, thank you professor." 😂
This video definitely is my mentality as I've been getting into magic. I have a pack addiction
Was building a goblin deck one Saturday night and had a few too many to drink. Had an entire draft booster box of Dominaria remastered. Was looking for pashalik mons and realized that there was a chance he could be in the box. So I started opening, the very last card of the very last pack I pulled pashalik. I cheered so loud my dog came to see if I was ok. Needless to say I don’t have the box anymore for the draft night I was planning.
The buy singles advice is really good if you're only ever building decks, but I prefer to buy a box at each release I'm interested in and then keep them in "inventory", building decks with the cards I have.
This means I get to work out how to get value out of what I have instead of just copying someone's deck list.
I dunno, I just feel like building decks is at least half of the game and buying singles for decks instead of filling out spots on your own creations is like buying pre painted Warhammer.
My suggestion is to buy boxes of sets you like that have lots of good uncommons you’ll use. I never felt bad about how much MH1 or 2 I got because of all the generous gifts, or other useful cards. Also you better like the subthemes of the set in case future sets are printed that support them more. I got a fair bit of Eldraine because there were a lot of cool mechanics from food, sagas, Adventures. And now I have Tom Bombadill as a saga commander with Eldraine set around the corner.
Like the set, and watch the value.
You’ll never
HAHAHAHAH! That end it's GOLD! The good old time when I can but a box y_y
Pgs is such a good game store, glad to see it in a video
To be fair, MH2 is like the only set left where you almost always get your money's worth in pulls
I come to the professor for all my financial needs
Thanks for yet another great financial advice! Off to get me some MH2 boxes baby
Dude that’s so sick I never thought I’d see the shop owner in your vids I visit that store all the time I don’t remember how to spell his name and I don’t wanna butcher it tho lol
Literally the only thing stopping me from buying singles rather than boxes is my addiction to cracking packs. I swear if they packaged the singles I order in booster packs, I’d be set. 😂
"Create your own booster box"
@@kodeystockton1124 How? I've already looked into Cubeamajigs, but they don't give the same tactile feel of cracking packs.
I also got 2 lol. A misty rainforest and a arid mesa. Also pulled soem crimped cards that were fun to see
BUY SINGLES ! 🤘🦁🤘
Card kingdom
The birth of buy a Box game. Now we know the truth, it wasn't his idea.
Cracking packs is about the rush of taking a risk!!!! It’s an inefficient way to get the cards you want, but it’s fun! Better idea is to draft and then sell or trade what you pull in your draft packs!
I do love pulling something really cool that I wasn't even looking for.
I love my simic merfolk/sea monster deck rarely fails, even with no fetch lands.
That bolt thrower shirt. 🤘🏿
Man, the After School Special has really come a long way...
Tappy is so good as the "devil-on-your-shoulder" that just by watching this vid I bought a case.
Ragavan, Urza's Saga, Archon of Cruelty, and all of the "pitch" elementals are high value cards also available in MH2 outside of fetchlands.
EV on a box of MH2 should exceed retail value even after 2 years.
Seems good.
If there’s a specific card in a set I’m looking for, then I will refuse to open packs for it. At that point, it goes from opening packs for fun to gambling, and I’m not much for gambling.
Ayy that Bolt Thrower shirt!
Shout out to Portland Game Store for the background footage :D
This is why Collector products are the way to go.
Mh2 is a collector product. It's not a standard set.
I stick to a prerelease pack each set for the funsies/prerelease promo card. That usually gives me enough of a pack crack fix until the next set.
Depending on what else he pulled he could trade in the rest of rares and mythics for the Misty rain forests and keep whatever is left.
Wish I woulda bought singles as a kid. But you got so much more in a booster pack! Lol. Back in the 90's there was a Black Lotus in the case for $100 and another time a foil Gaea's Cradle for $40. 😂 waay too much money for one card.
That's funny, i just bought a single and got a foil misty rainforest just the other day for fun.
My biggest flex in the span of a month and 6 packs of modern horizons 2 later I pulled 4 fetch Lands
I had to nab those specific two myself for a Mardu commander deck a couple weeks ago because my luck on pulls is crap and I ONLY pull blue fetches.
This sounds exactly like a friend of mine!
It’s not often that the living embodiments of the angel and demon on my shoulder are featured in a UA-cam video
Love this
My first box of MHII contained 12 fetchlands. Can't beat that. Never bought another box (of MHII)
I once bought 3 packs and got 2 Arid Mesa and 1 Marsh Flats and some other good stuff. Sonce then I haven't buy any packs because I guess all my luck is gone now after those pulls.
I used to buy 20 pack bundles and pull 1 every time. I also didn't know that fetches were worth 40-60$ a pop because they don't print them all the time. TuT I traded so many away for commander resources.
Bolt thrower merch?! that´s impossible! :D
When you let the homie cook only to end up calling the fire department
This exact 'problem' is why I started buying single cards if I needed anything.
But I collect Pokémon.
(I never got into the competitive TCG side 😂)
The arid mesa marsh flats box is like every one I opened.
I buy boxes because I’m building my collection back up and I just want to have a repository of cards so I don’t have a $125 order on TCG player every 2 months. But I buy singles when I need them for specific things.
Valery nice clip. Basically it's just gambling. So you could also try spending the money in Las Vegas hoping the outcome will be another.
on tcgplayer, you can get a playset of all 5 of the fetchlands that are in MH2 for not much more than the price of one box of MH2
I'm new to magic and I swear this was me. I learned fast but not fast enough haha. Thankfully if I didn't watch I'd never know the importance of SINGLES SINGLES SINGLES ! HAHA
I purchased: 2 draft, 3 set, and 4 collectors boxes of MH2 thinking that.
I pulled one ragavan, and didn’t get two of each fetch land.
I had two collectors boxes (second printing) that each had zero fetches.
I have witnesses, your honor.
I didn’t pull a play set of elementals either.
Feel like I gotta mention the Bolt Thrower shirt
Unless it's a set I have a big interest in I usually only buy one box to satisfy my need to open packs and just go with singles from that point. But I'm also the collector that likes to get one of every card in a set. Kamigawa neon dynasty is destroying my wallet with singles
Tappy, Voice Of Unreason coming to a Secret Lair near you!
Anyone remember that card where Lillian is whispering into Chandra's ear?
Then there's people like me. Idk, I just like the feeling of cracking open booster packs. I KNOW I'm not likely to get anything worth more than maybe $0.25. But I love just opening them. Like something about opening packs just calms my anxiety.
Maybe there ARE singles in your area
Bolt Thrower T shirt spotted ! \m/ !!!!!
I don't play Magic, but I do play other card games. I'd rather buy singles than boxes (other than on the rare occasion that I want the excitement of cracking open a box and maybe find some special rarity card).
That’s so true. Been there.
Painfully close, looking for Sultai fetch lands and getting two fetches in the whole box, among which one arid mesa...
This felt like a personal attack.
I know that buying singles is the smartest choice financially. For the price tag of some boxes you can easilly finance an entire deck most of the time...but still, nothing feels as good as pulling cards you need from a pack yourself 😅🤫
I got 5 scalding tarn out of 1 box 1 being extended art and I still ended up pulling alot of other great cards in the 30-50$ range
Nice Bolt Thrower shirt
Tippy toes looks like the Prof's student 😅
Bolt Thrower! 🤘🏽
Tappytoeclaws would be the person to convince you to blow your money. People who miss triggers do that
I opened several of the set booster boxes of MH2 and averaged about 5 fetch lands per box plus got 3 full art ragavans
A playset of misty rainforest is one thing, but a box of modern horizons 2 could have anything in it! Even a set of misty rainforest!
Sounds like solid logic to me.
I opened 3 boxes and pulled 11-12 fetch and 3 ragavan as well
Yep, totally my thoughts.
I buy a box, if there is many cards in the set I want. Otherwise it is singles. MOM have a ton of cards I want, at all rarities, so I figured a set box was fine there. Whatever I don't get, I can get some singles of.
Buy a box! It could be anything. It could even be a Misty Rainforest. You know how much you’ve wanted one of those!
here for the bolt thrower shirt
With the current price of enemy fetchlands this is even more hilarious. A playset of Misty Rainforest is only about $70. Heck a playset of all the enemy fetchlands is only $300. Still dumb for lands, but compared to a box it's a steal.
sick bolt thrower shirt
