I love how clearly you can see the feathers rotate to allow air through on the up-flap.

Note how his shoulders rotate back so far that when he first raises his wings the wing is traveling nearly perpendicular to the earth. He doesn't spread his feathers and lets the air through as he does on the second flap, instead he actually twists the whole wing so it's "leading edge" is pointed straight up.

  • @JamSpreadson

I’ve never noticed how the flight feathers separate when the wings are on their way back up to allow air to pass between and then re-lock for maximum surface area!

Look how the feathers rotate on the upstroke of the wing to let the air bypass, and then fold back into a plane on the downstroke. Amazing

Do you know how wide my smile was watching this? I love birds, thank you so much. Is this some kind of sparrow?
I actually re-learnt birds jump a few days ago while I was researching what would be the wingspan of a biologically accurate dragon. I had monk parakeet as a kid and, yeah, I remember feeling the pressure against my body whenever he took off. It was so normal to me I just took it for granted.

Weird question.... I may be looking into this too much but on the up stroke you can see the shape of the outer feather (primary and secondary). Almost like the bird is channeling the air flow through the wing. Do you think that motion produces lift? Control of body motion ? Or are birds doing that to reduce drag on the up stroke of the flap?

Hey Destin, I'm amazed how you manage to capture the small things in our everyday life and show how fascinating they could be if you only take your time and look a little closer. It really puts a fresh perspective to life.
Recently came across the term 'counter steering' which is used mainly by motorcyclists. It basically is when going above ~15MHP steering the handlebar to the right would make your bike turn to the left and vice versa. From what I heard this feels natural when doing it but thinking about it in theory feels really counter-intuitive. Do you think you could look into it with a scientific approach and why different speeds affect this fenomenon differently?
    Cheers
