I polished my second hand vintage brass Trangia camp stove with very fine steel wool, that came up pretty nice, although with small visible scratches. I wasn’t too fussed, I was just happy it wasn’t dirty black from soot anymore😅👍
Have you ever done this for chainrings? I've got an a used set of M900 cranks that I want to spruce up for a build and think polishing the chainrings would clean them as well!
Yeah but I don’t clear every crankset I polish. The clear coat doesn’t stick well to polished surfaces and on cranks your shoes will likely wear through it anyway. Things like brake calipers, stems etc are good to clear coat as there’s less chance of them being scratched up. I have cleared these, it’s (almost immediately) scratched and peeling where shoes have contacted. They still look ok, but not crispy fresh. If you just leave them raw and wipe over with Autosol every now and then-they’ll arguably be easier to keep looking nice. They take a long time to fully oxidise back, the shine takes a few months to dull from what I’ve seen. But at that point a quick rub with autosol/brasso brings them back. Also, wax helps keep smudges to a minimum and slows the oxidising a bit.
I've polished some parts, but i never reach 5000 grid sand paper. The highest is 1500 or 2000 grid then i go with the autosol. And the final product look mirror finished. But seeing yours it make me want to give it a try to with WD40. I use only water before
Old video I know but a pro tip with polishing aluminium. You never have to go over 800 geit to get a perfect result. The pores of the aluminium are closing when you go above. So you can save alot of time just going up to 800 and start polishing and get the same results 🌞
Hi, nice cranks, and the result is amazing, Actually I have 96 GT zaskar frame that looks have lot of oxidize on it, Can I do the same way to clean and polish my frame? Thank you before
Thanks! Oo nice. You can yeah, I have a GT video where I do a shorter method. But for a Zaskar if you have the time then going the slow way like I polished these cranks gives a nicer result. It will take a long time, though! Haha

Cheers! Happy with the results 👌 a few signs are: You’ll feel the sandpaper drag less, it gets to a point where it stops sanding the old marks and you can feel a resistance change. Visually you can see the sanding marks go in the direction you were sanding (not old sanding lines in a different direction). Which is why I end each grit in one direction, so when I start the next one I go a different direction until I get rid of those marks. (Then back to diagonal etc).

Great job! Those cranks look incredible! Highly recommend you get a tub of Mother's mag & aluminum wheel polish. Really speeds up the final polish.

I find using toilet roll to final polish works well on cranks.

You could try an automotive wax or spray on ceramic coat
