I love hearing what varieties people are growing. I have 3 cherry types - SunSugar, Honeydrop and Black Cherry. 3 Oxheart - Red, Yellow and Orange Russian. 2 determinate- Prairie Pride and Dwarf Pink Passion. 2 new varieties- Cosmic Eclipse and Pineapple. 1 indeterminate that I grew a couple of years ago and am growing again. The seeds were given to me by a lady who called them Dad’s Large Italian. Her father got the seeds from a next door neighbour who had brought them from Italy. I believe that they are an heirloom Italian variety. They grew 10 feet tall and gave tomatoes that weighed between 1 and 2 pounds! Hope you have a good harvest after your rocky start.
Sounds like a great lineup! I've grown Pineapple before - seem to remember it was good. I've been thinking I should grow more determinate varieties. 10 feet tall - WOW!
…I’m not growing any, but am looking forward to seeing your harvest and taste test, Sharon. I see that Gurney’s Seeds have the Cherokee Carbon and I think that ten dollars for 15 seeds is expensive so save some seeds from yours. …Black Krim, a Russian tomato is my FAVORITE. 🍅 ♥️🥫 Hopefully Tim likes tomatoes. 😁
I was watching your 2023 taste test video today and jumped to this one in the middle to see everything you planted this year. I copied this info about Heirloom Marriage tomatoes from Totally Tomatoes. I buy a bunch of seeds from them, mostly tomatoes and peppers and I am ALWAYS happy with their seeds. "Heirloom Marriage Hybrid varieties are produced from modern day unions of heirloom parents, providing hybrid vigor while maintaining the virtue and integrity of their old-fashioned beginnings. They were bred for improved yield, earlier maturity, and fewer blemishes while maintaining old-time flavor."
I had started alot of seeds, unfortunately by the time they are hardened off they were dying. I have 6+ years of gardening/ seed starting under my belt. It was crazy, I lost tomatoes, celery, peppers and cucumbers. My zucchini, brussel sprouts and cabbage did fine. So I went to the Amish greenhouse and got some slicer and cherry tomatoes. Super sweet 100's is the only one I can remember. Love your opening phrase..." here for the tomatoes!"😂 I like the taste test videos, sure hope you do them this year.
I am also an Oxheart Fan. Trying some different ones this year: Kosovo, Cancelmo Family Heirloom, Kenosha Growing Jasper for the first time because of you. I always grow Ukranian Purple (aka Purple Russian), Black Krim, Paul Robeson, Dr. Wyches, Sungold, and Barry's Crazy.
Nice! I look forward to seeing your harvest and your taste test on these. I am growing a lot of cherries (black cherry, sungold, barry's crazy cherry, sunpeach, matts, everglade). I wish I had an ox heart in that list but didn't get the seeds. Will do next year. Those Brandysweet plumb sound amazing and I have heard a few people say there are the best. I will try those next year and just added them to my list. I am having the worst year for marigolds. Seeds not germinating, then when they did 3 plants that did died on me and 5 got striped by something eating them. Slugs seem to be bad this year and I am trying 1 last time with every measure I can think of.. I have tried 3 different marigold seed companies and also my own. I might drop them all together this year.
Barry's Crazy keeps coming up ... I'll have to try those. I have pretty good luck with marigolds. However, I plant a lot of seeds in each cell (like 5-7) and usually only get one or two plants. I usually buy my seeds from Baker Creek or Johnny's.
@@SharonsHomeGarden Thank you for that tip. I will start doing that too and see if it helps. This is my first year grown Barry's crazy cherry but so far the plant is insanely strong and growing like a weed compared to all my other plants.
No surprise, we are planting a couple of the same varieties. Amish Paste and Pink Oxheart. I am doing 88+ varieties this year in my SD garden, over a 105 plants. Also participating in a tomato breeding project. Will be taste testing too. Yup, the seed count has gone way down. Baker Creek used to be very generous with their seed counts. Not any more. Pine Tree seeds ... I do not shop from them anymore. Exciting year! Good luck! A blessing you have two gardens this year.
Adelaide festival and rosella purple, both large tomatoes but dwarf variety so dont take up much space, they are prob 5ft tall right now. They are heirloom varieties so i save the seeds. Im in SW AR zone 7b/8a. They do great here. For a lot of tomatoes for canning we grow celebrity and better boy. Celebrity is determinate large tomatoes. Better boy is indeterminate large tomatoes
I'm thinking about growing more determinate varieties in future years. Get the harvest over with all at once. We are still months away from a "mater samich" here. Good luck with your garden!
Can't wait for your tasting video! Good luck!! *fingers crossed Are you not growing any Aunt Ruby's German Green Giant this year? You liked it so much on one of your tasting videos. That one is in my top 3, along with Black Krim and Brandywine Sudduth's strain. I also always have Black Cherry and Green Zebra. By the way, the tomato seed companies in South Africa also started skimping on seeds - some only send 10 seeds per packet now! My friend in the USA will be visiting soon, so I'm going to ask her to bring me some Brandy Sweet Plum and Amish Paste seeds - we don't get those here. However, for the last two seasons I've had an awful time with thrips and the Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus they transmit. The virus destroyed almost my entire crop both years to the point where I hardly got any tomatoes, no matter what I tried to fight them. This year I am building a structure with anti-thrips netting to see if that works... However, that netting is VERY dense, so I'm worried about its heating effect and ventilation issues. But I hope it works, otherwise I don't know what I'll do. I can't NOT grow tomatoes! So cross your fingers for me too... lol
Hi! Aunt Ruby's wasn't one I pulled out of my seed collection this year. Maybe I didn't have any seeds left. I had never heard of thrips. Had to look it up. With the netting I would worry about them getting pollinated, but what do I know! Lol! I hope you are able to solve your issues. Good luck!
@@SharonsHomeGarden Thank you :) You're right about the pollination, but I normally tap all my blossoms every time I walk through my plants anyway, or I just bang the trellis a few times to create vibration, so I think it should be fine. Let's see!
My top 3 beefsteaks are 1 Abe Lincoln, 2 Blue Beauty 3 Bonnies Best! My favorite cherries are Sungold, my own variety, called smokey grape, and a saved seed from what I think was sweet 100's. I have taste tested against all different kinds, and non compares to any seed I have, so I just keep saving it year to year. I didn't know sweet 100 was a hybrid when I saved it.

Wow! $10 bucks a pack?!? I will definitely be saving some of those seeds! Tim likes cherry tomatoes. The rest we will be canning. Take care!

Have you ever tried Mortgage Lifter? I usually grow about 20 plants of these They make great sandwiches. I usually eat 2 a day all growing season.
Oh boy, I tried those years ago and haven't grown them since. I should give them a try again ...

@@SharonsHomeGarden If you want some of my seed I can mail you some.
That would be wonderful! Let me see if I can figure out how to DM you ...
I’m only growing Amish paste so I can can it. Don’t like eating tomatoes. Yuk! How do you trellis your tomatoes? Do
You prune them hard?
I've done several different methods of trellising. This year in the farm garden we are doing the Florida weave.
