While they didn't win a Cup, from the late 80s when I was a little kid through the end of the pre-lockout era (2004), the Flyers were a perennial contender (with the exception of a few years in the early 90s). It was frustrating, but hope sprang eternal. The past 10 years have been really challenging as a fan. I'm really glad they've finally embraced the rebuild.

Wayne Gretzky said the one time that if Pelle Lindbergh didn’t die, the Flyers would’ve won a Stanley Cup.
Also, that 0304 Flyers team they were the closest team I’ve ever seen to winning the Stanley Cup. Our defense was so banged up that year we had Sammy Kapenen who was the winger starting on the defence for us we also had Joni pitkanen and Dennis sedinburgh because Eric desjsardin was injured.
Never forget Primeau tying game 6

It's too bad you weren't around in the 'Broad Street Bullies' Days! Man, those were some battles! Although I wasn't a Flyers fan, I admired their good luck charm “God Bless America” by Kate Smith, also Goaltender Bernie Parent a lot! Ed Van Impe, Bobby Clarke, Dave Schultz, Bill Barber, Rick MacLeish & company were a TOUGH bunch!

I’m a Pittsburgh native Penguins fan and I’ve always admired the hell out of those 80s Flyers squads - they’re one team era I always look for hockey cards of whenever I’m at a flea market. Propp, Zezel, Lindbergh, Hextall, Mark Howe (Mr. Hockey’s own son), Kerr, Tocchet…they had a lot of talent and a lot of heart, especially coming together after the tragedy with Pelle Lindbergh.
There’s a great story about Hextall where one time late in a regular season game Gretzky had a breakaway and Hextall stoned him: Wayne looked back and said “Who the hell are you?” - Ron shot right back “Who the hell are YOU?!” 🤣

    2. I fully acknowledge my recency bias in weighting the Legion of Doom era ahead of the earlier one since I couldn't watch the earlier run as I lived in places like Alabama. So my personal experience and pain comes from being older and in places I could actually see them dominate on TV.
    3. This was awesome info.

The Devils/Flyers rivalry in the 90s was great… the flyers had some good teams but just kept running into better teams like the 90s devils, 80s oilers and islanders. It’s crazy how many times they got knocked out by the future champion. That 3-1 comeback by the devils I’ll be honest the legion of doom was a powerhouse. I always rooted against them as a devils fan but they kinda deserved one looking back. Boucher was good enough, it pretty much came down to Elias w a timely goal in game 7 of the Flyers might have won in 00. The devils were the champs and bear Philly in 7 but Dallas in 6.

Great video as I grew up falling in love with the mid 80's Flyers & more in love with the Legion of Doom of the mid 90's... I just wished they somehow could've combined the LOD top line onto the 80s teams with their solid defense, stout goaltending, forechecking prowess & overall grit and then they themselves would've been a DYNASTY that rivaled the actual dynasties they encountered in those Stanley Cup years of 85, 87 & 97 [i.e. Oilers & Red WIngs]...
And to add a not-so-fun fact, in their other three Stanley Cup losing seasons in team history (1976, 1980 & 2010) they also succumbed to eventual "dynasties" in the Habs, Isles & Hawks :-/// What Sht luck haha!!!

Great video! I would even include the '88 and '89 teams as part of that great '80's run - even though they weren't great in the regular season those years, I remember they lost a heartbreaking series to the Caps in '88 (blew a 3-1 series lead) and then in '89 they took a great Montreal team to six games in the conference final. Huge upset win over the Pens in the second round

If your Lindros Era started with the 92-93 season, you'd think that Mark Recchi was there the whole time, too: he had two solid seasons as part of the "Crazy Eights" line with Recchi (#8), Lindros (#88) and Brent Fedyk (#18) in 92-93 and 93-94 seasons. What's wierd is that Recchi was part of the trade with Montreal that brought LeClair to the Flyers. Wierder still is that Hextall was one of the players that was traded to the Nordiques for Lindros. 90's Flyers were something else.

In the 1980 finals Nystrom was not off side, but the goal earlier was one of the greatest blown non-calls in sports history. I'd also like to point out there was another controversial goal early in the series where the Isles had a goal knocked in with a high stick, albeit not as blatant as the game 6 issue. i think it was in game 1, possibly Denis Potvin, but gotta check that. Bottom line is the Flyers gave the Isles too many power plays; that was an awesome team on the PP those Isles.

Flyers 80's chances died the moment Pelle Lindbergh's Porsche hit that wall. But, yeah, the early 80's Flyers were such a disappointment. Losing 3 straight 1st round series' bookended with the finals losses to the Islanders and Oilers. 1988 sucked losing to the Caps and the official death of the Broad Street Bullies came in the 1989 conference finals when no one came to the aid of Brian Propp who was drilled in a dirty hit by Chelios. Whether or not they win a Cup with the dynasty Islanders and Oilers I don't know. I often wonder that if Bernie's career doesn't end on February 19, 1979 do they beat the Islanders.

Flyers fan here. The '80's Squads mostly had 'heart and grit'...the 90s Teams with the Legion of Doom were (sorry), largely lightweights with only one solid line who all but disappeared in the 97 Cup Finals. That Cup Final made it abundantly clear that the Flyers were way out of their 'league', with Yzerman & Company putting rings around them at-will. The only player on the Flyers who showed-up was Rod Brind'Amour...one of the few showing a solid effort throughout that series.
One thing, however, has remained a constant: The Flyers have been the 'stepping stone' for Cup- opponents, who later launched Dynasties during their Cup Reigns (Canadiens...Islanders...Oilers (85 and thru 90)...Red Wings, and the Blackhawks).
We always bring out the best in our opponents at the worst possible times.
