1966 was some year for sports in New York. Rangers, Yankees, Giants & Knicks all finish in last place, Mets finish 9th out of 10 teams in the National League. Only the Jets break the pattern with a decent but not great year. Also, not only was Gordie Howe old but so was Allan Stanley. Two players on the NHL All-star team in 1966 whose careers went back to the 1940's.
Really appreciate the historical coverage of the Habs!
Detroit's final trip to the Finals until 1995.
Seeing a Bruins fan decked out in Habs gear brings a smile to my face 😂
As a Leafs fan I'm sad for tomorrow lol.
Yup lol
Howe and Jagr played great together.
lol
Linus Ullmark, legendary Red Wing in the 60s 🔥
Bill Gadsby and Gordie Howe became the next two players to play 20 years. Gadsby retired after the finals, a great defenseman, a great career, just could never get the cup. At the time of his retirement he led all defensemen in games played, goals, assists, points, and penalty minutes.
The cup winning goal had controversy attached to it also, Henri Richard seemed to have gloved the puck into the net. But the referee didn't see it, so it counted. Would be crazy with the internet today.
Richard did not "glove" the puck into the net. He had been tripped and the pass from Balon hit him on the arm and Richard, his arm and the puck all ended up in the net.
@@OwenMahoney It still would have sparked controversy today. From the footage, it seemed like it hit his glove, same from Roger Crozier's motions just after the goal, seem to say there was at least something amiss. Considering today they over analyze goals in the regular season, let alone playoffs. It would still have controversy.
I'm really loving these videos. I thought I had it rough being a fan in the '70s but based on how the Rangers were doing back then, I'm glad I wasn't alive yet lol.
Thanks for these videos I'm old and Love them . I never realized Bobby Rousseau was once that good although when he got older he went to rangers and played terrific .
With the #2 pick of the 1966 NHL amateur draft the New York Rangers took future Hall of Fame Defenseman Brad Park.
Eric Nesterenko continued to be a standout for the Hawks.
Just an oversight that Shannon forgot to mention him.
As a Leafs fan, I'm sad that next season will be their last Cup win lol
Later, Ballard’s comment when he heard of Imlach’s passing: “Better him than me.”
I like it more and it makes sense if the NHL expanded again in Canada since it's the ultimate sport there, but in the end, it's all about the $$$ which America has. I'd love to see the Nordiques come back. Hamilton to me still seems like an odd choice since it's so close to Toronto
The NHL is still mad at the Hamilton Tigers for going on strike in 1924-1925 and thus probably won't give them a team. 100 years is a long time to hold a grudge.
The new Flyers franchise would not have made it, if Ed Snyder wasn't there to bail out Jerry Wolman, who was supposed to be the original owner.
Wolman was a real estate developer who should have stayed in real estate. He bought the NFL Philadelphia Eagles in 1963 with a lot of debt and then right after that bought the Connie Mack Stadium, home of the baseball Phillies, again borrowing money and having no capital to both operate the Eagles as well as do anything with the dilapidated baseball park. He was close to bankruptcy, but with bluster and undoubtedly helped by an expansion crazy NHL that was going to get a team in one of the largest cities in the country hell or high water, somehow was granted the franchise. Snyder was a minority owner and when Wolman did indeed go bankrupt and Snyder took control of the team before it played a game.
Love the series
Can't wait to get to the Peter Puck Era n THG thoughts 😄😄
Great video
It would have been interesting of the ill fates Seals had not made it to the nhl and Vancouver had become the 6th team instead.
Leafs could have won this year, but last gasp was next year.
It’s Bobby Hull! It’s the HULL CONNECTION. He played with Gordy Howe, who played with Gordy Howe? Bobby Hull. What rhymes with Hull? Hell! Who’s from Hell? GARY BETTMAN. It’s the Hull Connection!
Actually hell does not rhyme with Hull. But you are dead on about Bettman.
@@OwenMahoneyI guess you weren't here yet when Shannon did that video. It is one of the all time classics on the channel.
Ah, old 😂Wheatabix! Normie Ullman. Made silly money over and above what Wings paid him. Other players have endorsement deals that put their salaries to shame, most notably Red Kelly, Ullman and Bobby Hull.
Richard slides into the net with the puck. Not allowed now. But, it's Montreal...
