Absolutely. I loved every song on that album except Smoke on the Water because it’s so overplayed. It’s hilarious to see the joy on his face just like I had 47 years ago when I was 13. Lazy is the perfect combination of blues and hard driving rock and roll. Welcome to Rock and Roll young man.

As a teenager in the early 1970's the excitement of seeing Deep Purple live was off the scale . . my pals and I never missed a concert when Purple came to our home town in Newcastle, England. Check out . .'Child in Time' . . 'Speed King' and 'Hard Lovin' Man' - all from the classic album 'Deep Purple in Rock.'
We had just finished working high steel at Giant's Stadium on the Stone's Bridges to Babylon Tour, Clem who had been their Site Coordinator was working Local Crew with us and this song came on the radio. I see a tear in his eye and he tells me about being 18 years old, sweeping the floors at SeeFactor in London, a major player in equipment for rock tours. Machine Head had just come out and the company had no one left to send out with Deep Purple on tour. So, 18 year old Clem, brand new to the business, is sent on a World Tour!,26 years later he is looking back on his life on the road.
The best purple lineup in their history i think..the lineup did change many times over the years..and todays 2020 version of purple just released a new album still with ian gillan on vocals.
This song was born on a tour bus going to Portsmouth UK in 1971, when a reporter asked the band how they wrote songs. To demonstrate, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore grabbed an acoustic guitar and began playing a riff consisting of a single g repeated over and over, while vocalist Ian Gillan improvised lyrics over the top. The song was refined and was performed that same night.
Deep Purple . . . Highway Star . . . this brings back memories from college and our outrageous "Pill-box" dorm quarters, with a view and plenty of the best Rock 'n Roll on campus! Beyond great! TY for playing this ~
Daniel, Smoke on the Water and Highway Star are both from Machine Head (1972) another great album. Lazy is a 7 minute jam with extended organ solos by John Lord and vocalist Ian Gillan adds harmonica. Blackmore, Paice(drums) and Glover(bass) all get to showcase their talents here too, similar to Highway Star. Pictures of Home and Maybe I'm a Leo are underrated gems from this disc.
fun fact, they were being interviewed while on tour and the interviewer asked how they wrote songs so Richie started jamming the riff, Ian started singing and they wrote this song in 10 minutes then performed it that night
"Machine Head" is a great record, a true party album. I got lost in it many times. "Smoke on the Water" (which you heard) is its most famous track, but "Lazy" and "Pictures of Home" are better numbers, imo. The album "In Rock" by these guys is one of the precursors to metal, I think. Deep Purple was WAY too loud when I saw them, but they were a great band. "Highway Star" is killer, isn't it?
If you ever have an opportunity to listen to the original sound track of the rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, you will discover that the lead singer , Ian Gilliam, sings the part of Jesus. He is an excellent vocalist!
Greetings from Calgary, Canada. You mentioned how much you liked Smoke on the Water. FYI, the "Rolling Truck Stones Thing" refers to the Rolling Stones Mobile Recording Studio. Purple recorded Machine Head, Burn, and Made in Europe with it. The RSMRS now resides at the National Music Center here in Calgary. It is fully restored and completely functional. It is on permanent display thus not mobile, but, anyone can record with it either from a studio in the Center or live from an adjoining blues club. Coolest part of the whole Center.
Jon Lord, the man behind the mighty Hammond B3, who fed his organ through a Marshall guitar amp and added the fearsome Lesley Rotating Speakers to be able to compete with the power of Ritchie Blackmore's guitar. That's what made Deep Purple. Jon Lord's organ parting any sea in front of him to let emerge the sound of how rock truly should sound. And he succeeded. In my book he did.
I have that Album and I still love it and Back then it was everybody's first song they learned to play! listening to this on my 8-track in the car back in the day!
Deep Purple are certainly one of the greatest bands in rock history. Their influence on other great bands is undeniable. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Led Zep and many more.

There is a show on AXS TV called Classic Albums. It can be found On Demand. The show talks about classic albums and how they were conceived , and recorded. The one about Machine Head is Season 4, Episode 2. All 5 members of Deep Purple are interviewed extensively about the experience. It's a must see for any true Deep Purple fan.

This version put out Machine Head, Made In Japan and In Rock and were easily the most popular lineup for the Purple. Rock On.
Yes, no question, and especially because Daniel has already heard the studio version. “Smoke“ the live version I think is definitely worthy of a reaction. But make sure it’s off of “made in Japan“. That’s the best live version. UA-cam will have probably 50 other ones but that’s the one to go for.

Very good songs from Deep Purple are "Fools", "Child in time", "April" (a long song with a classical orchestra) or "Perfect Strangers" from the eighties.
This is my favorite Deep Purple song! I love how fast the tempo is, and when I learned that first solo wasn't a guitar but actually an organ I legit couldn't believe it lmao. You're right to like this more than 'Smoke On The Water'. You keep doing songs that were the first I heard of many bands.
