Dear Diagnosis...

  • This month we asked our Unfixed members to write letters to their chronic conditions. Some sat down and hand wrote break-up notes. Some wrote promotions letters. Others typed-out letters of inquiry about the nature of their relationships. Still others improvised and found that hate and gratitude can coexist. The diversity of responses we get every month offers a remarkable view into the complexity of living Unfixed. It is never black and white. Never good or bad. It's always both.
After six months together, we are discovering one resounding, shared sentiment. Chronic illness fosters a strength of spirit and perspective that is unshakeable. While in the midst of stabbing pain or unending vulnerability we may curse, withdraw from the world and lose our ground. But within this very adversity, our foundations are being rebuilt and reinforced by something greater.
As our Unfixed Community member Alayna so eloquently wrote in her letter, "You can’t stop me. I will not thank you, nor will I ever cower down or give up, no amount of scarring, fear or inconvenience will keep me from living a life of beauty. Our history together may have taught me that, but it’s my resilience that ensures it.”
    ABOUT:
On February 1, 2020, twenty people living with chronic conditions began a 24-month journey together. They all received an email with a prompt, a question or an idea to help them explore a topic around living Unfixed. Then they set up a tripod and recorded their response with their smartphones. Some are living with the aftermath of a cerebral stroke, others are struggling with autoimmune disease or daily, debilitating migraines. These honest, unpolished moments are at the heart of the unfixed state - the highs, the lows and everything in between.
On the first of each month, they will receive a new prompt. Subscribe to our channel to stay up-to-date on the monthly community videos premiering exclusively here on UA-cam!

Such moving statements, in new ways we haven't seen before from the Unfixed members - there's a a kind of intimacy in speaking directly to their personified conditions.

Powerful & emotional words & people, I take my hat off to them all, thank you for this. I'm really struggling to find any positives from my terrible accident and living with the effects 24/7 - including traumatic replays of doctors' lies and denials (I was injured by medical errors), brain, and throat/swallowing and neck injuries, damaged eyesight and digestion, nerve and muscle losses, mobility difficulties and constant pain. When I can I do my art...
