My Harley Knucklehead Has Too Much Oil on the Top End

  • This Knucklehead is getting too much oil to the top. Let's check out the pump, which has a circulating, pressure limiting, valve in it. I have another one of those valves and it seats better. If we change it and reset the pressure, it just might do the trick. To get to our website, tap on this link. pacificmike.com/

I started using white lithium on certain parts since I saw you use it and I’m very happy! I’ve changed the primary oil on my street glide 3 times and I’ve reused the derby cover gasket every time and I just reapply white lithium and it doesn’t leak!

Thanks Mike. I love those engines. Never knew the lithium grease deal. Maybe the lithium crystals lock together in the thin film and don't permit oil to penatrate.

I received a Coffee Table Book entirely on The HD Knucklehead! It is not an easy read ,I gotta take it slow and absorb nd reread things. It is mind boggling how many mechanical changes were made to the Knuckleheads continually thru production years as problems developed. The book really gets into the specifics of what issues developed and how they attempted to resolve them . Love Your videos ,I only recently discovered them .

Well Thank You. Yes Knuckleheads are interesting. The real fun, take my word for this, is a mildly warmed over Knucklehead with a well balanced lower end, the right cam, well engineered exhaust, right gearing flying down the road. Truly "E Ticket." Nothing runs like a Knuckle.

Any old machinery fascinates me! I ve kind of been sucked into loving flat head engines now.I got into old walk behind Gravely L Model Walking Tractors and have restored a few of them .Amazing Machines ,they were built with so many milling machine operations they could never be reproduced today . I learned how simple yet efficient flat heads are . So I started reading on old 45 cu in Harleys ,and the big bore flat heads ,love the old K Model Sports ters. Your videos are wonderful ,I just watched your rebuild of Kiehn CV Carb ,I put the slide in backwards once .It didn't work too well ! I converted my 87 FXRS with Butterfly Carb over to a Kiehn CV Carb off an 89 FLH. I need to go one size bigger on main jet I believe. I have run the air fuel mix out as far as it goes without falling out and still get some coughing until warmed up a goid bit .It runs great otherwise . Thanks again ,I m gonna be busy watching all your videos .

Thank You. You know, on that carburetor of yours, the main jet doesn't go in to affect until you're flying down the road. The original is usually okay. The low speed jet generally needs changing. It sounds like you'd really like the next size larger on that low speed jet (it's working the whole deal until about 60mph).

Ya know, I've talked with a few of my motorcycle friends about making your bike stand out. Not so drastically change things completely, just subtle little things that set them apart from the run of the mill motorcycle.
Most bikes I see have black frames, I suppose because it goes so well with any color you can find. But I love that you have your knuckle frame in yellow, which, in my opinion isn't the easiest color to make it look good. But your knuckle is such a good looking bike with the frame and tins matched up in a color I don't see on many bikes at all.

Good morning Mr Pacific, Cameraman Mike, hope all is well. Gotta say, white lithium grease is magic. I always use it on gaskets and seals, never had a problem or leak and seals up beautifully every time. Once you smell it burn off, you know it’s sealed.
Gosh, I’d sure love a knucklehead some day, what enthusiast wouldn’t I guess is the bigger question lol.
Both my Twin Cams are 2002, I’m bias towards that year for many reasons but I think I may turn my stage 4 95” into a 106” stroker, going from a 4” stroke to 4 1/2” and shorter skirt pistons. Of course many will say, “ you’re splitting the cases, why not go 124?” Because it’s an extra 6g’s plus in parts and what the hell am I gonna do with a 124” that I can’t do with a 106” on the street besides run hotter and put unwanted stress on other components. Nothing wrong with a 124 but these days, it’s cheaper to just do a crate and where’s the fun in that? No, I’m gonna do all my own work, build a reliable stroker 🤞🏻 and make Uncle Mike proud lol . Some say “what would Jesus do?” I say “ What would Pacific Mike do? “, he’d build a bad ass bike, that’s what he’d do.
    Take care of yourself Mike.

That's all high performance stuff. When building big motors, a lot of things come up that have to be addressed. Making a gasket is no big deal, although, I'll bet Genuine James gaskets has one. Give them a call. "Button" wrist pin keepers are quite common. Delrin is very cool stuff that is a composite of teflon and nylon and doesn't wear out. You'll need to do some research on the oil system. If you can, contact the builder. It will save a lot of headaches. Sounds like a very expensive ,build.

Hey Mike! Working on a 2005 Road Glide with a bunch of miles on it, over 100k. Bike lost a significant amount of it's engine oil into the primary, engine oil was way low and primary was way over filled, transmission oil was ok and filled to proper level. So I surmised the engine oil seal to be the culprit, can't figure any other way the engine oil could get into the primary other than that seal. So I removed the old seal and spacer and purchased both new. Here's my question! When I removed the old seal it looked like it was in backwards compared to what I'm used to seeing in a automotive main seal. Is that because the main purpose of that seal is to keep the primary oil out of the engine and not to keep the engine oil out of the primary? I checked the service manual and it didn't say anything about the direction of that seal. This bike has had a unknown number of previous owners and a lot of miles so I'm wondering if someone else might of put that seal in backwards. If that is the way it goes in then there isn't much area of that outer seal to drive it in with. Thanks for any input! PS I love my PM tee-shirt's , I got one of each. Glad you used a good quality Champion shirt. LLH&R

Hi Mike, love your videos. I’ve a question if you don’t mind. I’m changing the gaskets on my shovelhead oil pump, do you recommend paper or plastic? Thanks

What did the factory use? I prefer paper and white lithium grease.

I'm guessing ( running over a Bear ) is an inside joke , I once knew a paper delivery lady who swears she was attacked by a deer and had to defend herself by cutting its head off ( btw she carried a Bowie knife ) but my Uncle's and I laughed and said that she probably tripped over someone's lawn deer .

No, it's lost in my phone somewhere, but she texted me a picture of the bear lying in the street. And, you'd have to know Linda. She is a little different.

Please don't take offense to my recent comment , Just some people reality these days are questionable to say the least . but in the previous video I don't remember getting a clear understanding if the bear was already down when she hit it or it ran in front of her , But what made me think it was an inside joke was after you mentioned the bear this time I could hear camera man mike laughing several seconds after .

You don't know Linda. She's funny. Anyway. A car or truck hit the bear first. The bear was down. Linda ran over it and fell down. How this was ascertained, I don't know. But the bear was still alive before Linda ran over it. Linda is tough. She got roughed up a little when she fell. I think she was most sorry for the bear. She is truly a kind person.

Its good Linda is ok , Its hard to see what is in font of cars , Its even harder keeping 4 car lengths of space between yourself and the vehicle ahead of you , Someone always wants to go around you and cause a sardine jam and then the other vehicles get mad when that loud motorcycle passes them for safety sake .

Well I was going to say some dumb jokes about Lithium but then you said 1/4-24........

    • @pacificmike9501

And then.... I don't get it. 1/4 x 24 is something you need to always be aware of on these old Harleys.

Not in a Knuckle motor. Knuckles were Harley's first pressurized oil systems. They depend on vacuum at the right time in the right place. Once you get it all right, it stays and just runs and runs.
