Tintagel is cited as the place where Arthur was conceived, according to Geoffrey of Monmouth’s History at least, and it deserves recognition for that but I’d argue the most important place for the Arthurian legend isn’t anywhere associated with the “historical” Arthur but where the legend itself flourished most, namely Windsor Castle. In the reign of Edward III, you could make the argument that he was just a _little_ obsessed with the legend of King Arthur… going so far as to create the Order of the Garter, the highest order of chivalry in England, exclusively modelled on Arthur’s knights. To that end, he had a round table constructed at Windsor Castle as a direct parallel to Arthur. And while everyone in Edward’s reign knew it was all a LARP, that fact seemed lost on later generations as by the time of Henry VIII, he - and everyone else - seemed to genuinely believe that not only was this Arthur’s *actual* round table but that Windsor Castle was the real Camelot. Not sure whether that’s stranger than Shakespeare - seemingly unironically - claiming that the Tower of London was built by Julius Caesar, but there you go. The point being that the Arthurian Legend was inescapably important to the culture and self-perception of Medieval England, even though Arthur was more likely than not a Celto-Roman who had more in common with the Welsh but facts of that nature are ironically more important about the Arthurian Legend than the actual historicity of the man. Was there a real Arthur? Maybe, maybe not. If he did exist, he was a petty Celtic warlord who rose to prominence in the aftermath of the collapse of the Roman Empire who accomplished some local heroics but nothing history changing. But the _idea_ of King Arthur and it’s effect on Medieval literature and culture? That had a more real and profound effect than anything, and was ironically more real than the man Arthur could ever have been. So we should look to Tintagel, if there is indeed any truth to Geoffrey’s claims, to get a sense of what made Arthur the man. But if it’s the Arthur we all know about that you’re looking for, then it’s to Windsor that you should look instead.
