- While visiting Mackinac Island with my family I made sure to check out some of the locations from one of my favorite romantic movies! Somewhere In Time!
Christopher Reeve travels back in time to find his true love! It was based on the novel Bid Time Return written by Richard Matheson.

This was great! I was a Production Assistant and extra in "Somewhere In Time" (still have my crew bicycle license plate #48 hanging on the wall) and had the supreme honour to be standing there on set on the beach the day they filmed the "Is It You?" scene. Great memories - good interweaving of your footage and the film.

I am in Bahia, a huge state about 950 miles from the state of Rio, and the city of Rio of the same name, no jewelry, no wallet, keep cash spending money in your front pocket, no watch, or keep a cheap watch in your front pocket, you will love Brazil, everyone does, it has a over a ninety percent rating by tourists, My state will have a ton of torists who will visit the Olympics then rent a beach house in Bahia. We Bahia are north of Rio and have a shoreline and perfect weather year round. A little commercial for the State of Bahia. But maybe some youtubers are unaware and may go through life without visiting Brazil.

My parents went here to celebrate their 50th anniversary as it was my dad’s favorite movie. My sisters and I were there and it was amazing. He passed away July 21, 2022 and we added the music from this movie to his service.
I hv watched this movie over 60 times during the last 40 yrs and I still enjoy watching it very much! wish I can watch many more times in years to come!n

I just love Mackinac Island but I’ve never seen Somewhere In Time. Is it still available on Netflix in 2021?
No cars allowed on the island- bikes and horses only! Those of us who know Mackinac always laugh that Richard just stumbles upon the Grand when driving and stops on a whim! The book was set at the Del Coronado in CA.

It's amazing to see the Tree where Richard found Elise still looks the same as it was in the movie after 35 years. I love this movie so much. I wish I can go there someday.
My friend, Cathy, just came back from a bus tour to Macinac Island. With Bayouland Tours out of Houma, LA. They spent one night at the Grand Hotel. She showed me pictures of the room she stayed in. Wow.

i graduated in 1982. me and a couple of friends went to the island, a couple of yeares after the movie came out. i've always wished that i was there when they filmed the movie. i've been going to the island for 20+ years now. just love the slower pace.

It's a beautiful Island was there 4th of July 1996 and was cold in the evening. If your going pack some warm clothes we had no clue it would get that cold in the middle of Summer!
I love this island. I sailed there twice in the late 70s with my family. We road to the Grand Hotel on a horse drawn carriage, of course. Actually went inside and saw the memorabilia of Esther Williams, swimmer/actress, of her film there. One summer evening the crew wives were entertained on the front porch as we waited for the sailboats arrival from the Chicago to Mac Race. In the early 80s, in Chico, California, my son and nephew surprised me with the film, and I almost fainted when I saw the Grand Hotel in it. Of course, it's my very favorite love story and film. It was very exciting. So, in 1990 I just had to use the beautiful music from the film "Somewhere in Time" for my wedding. I can't forget to tell you that if you visit there, you will not only be blessed by the enormous beautiful hotel, but the delicious Fudge. I hope you don't miss it. God bless.
If you've never been to Mackinac Island it is a must do before you die experience of a lifetime stay at the Grand at least for one night its EPIC

WOW!!! Matt you are so awsome and funny. I love this video, it was great to watch and it brought back alot of memories for when I was there in 2014. Although those memories are there everyday with me. It actually brought tears to my eyes because I truely love the island. I will be going again this year, in July and October. I can't stay away. Please post more videos of the island if and when you go again. There just can't be enough videos to watch. Thanks again.

just got to watch this again. don't remember much from the flick because i was very young then. all i remember is jane seymour's beauty. in fact, i thought grand hotel was just a creation of the film's writer.

One last comment. At the end you pay tribute to Christopher Reeves and may HE R. I. P. . I was unaware that his love of his life Dana Reeves followed him in death quite soon after He passed away. They had a beautiful kind of love between them and believe that they were Soul Mates. I'm glad he had a loving family and a wife who loved him to the better end. They had a true love. 💜

Wish I could go back to 1958 ... we were so much in love,and no money to visit the Grand Hotel, but it didn't matter, we stayed off island, in a campground. And as all great romances, there was no happy ending... As they say And we will always have Mackinac Island...

When I lived in Michigan we went to the Grand Hotel.On Macinac Island ( pronounced Mackinaw) no cars were permitted.Only horses. An exception was made for them filming of this movie.I adore his movie but I don't watch it as often as I might becuase the ending tears me up.

My parents worked there for 12 years during their summers She was a school teacher so she worked as a waitress at the famous The Island House . My dad was a caretaker of the horses & drove a carriage to the Grand Hotel & other places. I have pictures from the late 20’s & early 30’s! My childhood was spent going to The Island every year in the summers. It’s a very special place for me & I saw it before all the present day charges & limited entrances, when there were fewer people. It used to be for affluent people to vacation. I have a whole album of pictures of my family from that time period. I treasure it like gold! A movie & music that always brings me to tears!
It was the last time they allowed cars on the island until Mike Pence decided he was too good to use the horse carriages for a visit and INSISTED on using a damn FLEET of 8 cars :-(

Thank you Matt!! A well done video and I am going to have to put seeing this on My Bucket List & staying a night at the Grand Hotel. I imagine it's expensive to stay there. Does someone have tours of the islands famous movie sites?? You showed a store of memorabilia from the Movie, is one able to buy scene photos and the one of Elise they had 3 is what made me curious. Can I buy stuff from there online?? I hadn't thought of it until now to see if you had a link here to do it. I truly Love this film and I have a male lover I wish I could go back in time and Marry. We were engaged and still young at age 22 . He gave me a Promise ring I still hold close to my heart and He found me on Facebook and we stayed in touch for 14 months until His untimely death at age 51 on Dec. 22, 2011. We were beginning to fall in love again but I am married & stayed completely faithful to my husband to date although I am not happy. So, to go back in time and Marry Him would possibly have changed both our destiny. He might have been in better health and I be happily married 20 years now. Well, I will never know. So, Matt if you've got the answers to my questions above, I'd love a reply. Thank you!! :-)

When I think of this film a poem by the British poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, published in 1850 comes to mind......I quote " I hold it true, whate'er befall, I feel it when I sorrow most, 'Tis better to have loved and lost. Than never to have loved at all.

It's been 50 years since I last visited Mackinac, true, but since when do they allow cars to be driven? We ferried across then had to park the car. Where are the saddle horses? Did I miss something? :-)
Wow, would love to go back and see what the island was like 50 years ago. Thats really cool. There are still saddle horses too, we rented a bike though. MattsRadShow Not has a chance to view the newer video yet but I definitely will. I wish he was still alive today and was himself before the accident, then how awesome would it have been if he was the tour host of the set of his own film. That, I would fly from Scotland and see it.
Filming was also done in the Mission Point Resort. The theater scenes (MP has a theater with a stage) I know were filmed there.

I have been there in 2008 and it's so touching to be able to visit the island. It's one of my favorite movie of all time. I plan on buying the blu ray version this year when it is release.

My absolute favorite movie. I took a bus tour trip with my Mom and we visited Mackinac Island so that I could visit the Grand Hotel and see each spot that I remember from the film. I was in seventh heaven. We even had lunch in the dining room. I do remember that the production company presented the hotel with the music box of the Grand Hotel and it was in the lobby under a glass case.

I ran a shop with Nancy Gayle Nephew (nephews jantzen Shop) where Reeves walks out of then skips down the street to the Baxter coin shop and the guy behind the counter of the coin shop was behind the counter in my shop he was a carpenter for the film built the gazeboos etc.The crew spent alot of money in the Jantzen shop and they were all great folks which i cant say MS Jane was.9thats a story in itself)Can we say - - - - -They used the nephew jantzen shop for 10 hours before Chris got it just right and that 10 hours was 6 seconds on film.They paid well for the use. Inside I was holding the store down. Reeves got so upset over the take after take the director asked me to leave so he could have a moment to himself. i obliged of course.He read his aiplane news magazine while he unloaded his anxiety.No i threw the magazine away,lol.All in all great time for all the locals and I will brag here.During the pool party when the wrap party was on I was thrown into the pool with Chis ,Jane and I all thrown in and I couldnt figure out why they threw me in as my so called scene was cancelled. yes i almost got in the picture but didnt work out,oh well.But i found out later it was the crews way of saying thanks for all the help with there clothing and presents for back home to there families. So only three were tossed into the pool not even Chris Plummer.Ok cant tell a lie.Chris plummer great guy and his wife had flown off the island back to hollywood before the wrap party.By the way he and his wife Elaine shopped us often loved our sweaters and such.And Candy Cain one of the female checker outers,shops girls over charged Elaine $600.00 dollars one day as she bought a ton of specialty sweaters which we specialized in carrying.From New Zealand( first importer of perrindale wool sweaters in the US) old english oioled wool,cashmere from Scotland and many others. Ah those were the days as they say. I left the island a year later and never looked back till now seeing this vid. Well done to the owner of such.

Matt this is a truly superb video!! My favourite romantic movie of all time, I watch it frequently and have listened to the sound track every bedtime for the past 20 years, it's almost a hypnotic ritual for me now. I would love somehow,someway to visit this hotel and it's grounds.

Probably my most favourite movie ever. I first heard the theme music long before I saw the movie and I very quickly proclaimed it to be my most favourite music in the whole world and it still is today. When watching the movie for the first time and hearing Christopher Reeve say it was his most favourite music in the whole world, I cried. My heart swells with emotion whenever I hear this played. The movie its self is breathtaking and I sincerely hope the day will come when I will have the opportunity (before I die) to visit The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island and stay as a guest and see everything I love about the movie. Thank you deeply for this video, I love this so much I have shared it with all my friends on face book. My love to you for this.
Thanks for posting this video! I loved the movie and music so much that I used the main song from the sound track in my wedding (as I walked down the isle with my father). Such a moving instrumental. I didn't rehearse with it so I didn't know when to start walking, butt when the music began, I told my dad to wait...then suddenly I recalled that the volume would intensify....and like magic, we started walking as if on queue.
