This is the one I retweeted! I was listening to it Nicky, because, I’m about to learn on a Numark MixTrack 2. I need to know the basics. It’s funny, I asked someone, if I could do a stutter loop, LOL! I look forward to your answers and advice. Such a big fan, and thank you for your likes on Twitter.
Such a great episode tbh and I love all your SMC ♥️🔥 But I always have a problem with the piano and another problem with the bass (1) The piano always makes the track feels like it’s muted or something wrong with all the sounds that are playing together. (2) The bass always does the same issue . ........ Can you explain please why your tracks don’t have this problem!!!
Hi Nick Thanks alot for all the information you give us I would like to know for the SMC #6 HOW TO THEARD A FULL FINAL MIX OR HOW YOU MASTER YOUR SONG IN ORDER TO GET IT LOUD AND WELL MIXED: I usually do the Jhon Cristian Masterchain Using the C4 from waves and others pluggins like the Brainworks and Izotope ones. Thanks A lot.
hey Nicky, could you explain where you place the single sounds in the mix? what do you make stereo and what mono? also the freq spectrum placement, that would be very cool! keep it up
Harmonic mixing is more like knowing what key your song is, to apply those frequencies to your EQ, there is a plugin called Fabfilter what can do that for you, you can click the piano roll down the EQ and see what key uses what frequency, its important that you mix the sounds in the same key as the song to get more loudness. Wikipedia spent a page on EQing and harmonic mixing!
Nicky, when layering sounds, how do you tell the difference of when your sound is perfectly full and when it's muddy. I find this a little difficult at times. Thank you!
Thanks for this great workshops. Please let me know where to buy the cleanest and clearest samples. Is it possible to produce such a track as Camorra only with Laptop, Logic Pro X Without an additional plugin ?
Thank you so much Nick!!! Camorra is my favourite track of yours that bell sound is amazing so groovy and catchy. Can you please explain if UAD plugins are a must for mastering do you think it will add something extra to the track ? I’m trying to do the investment obviously mixing must be good first like you always said. Thanks!
How do i mix to get the frequency spectrum decending from low to high. Everytime i have a finished mix i have too much volume on high end. If i eq it down it just starts to sound a bit weird. So basically how should i mix my high end?
Its hard to really teach this, you need to train your ears to know what gap you miss in the mix, but I usually put an EQ on the master and slide a shelf from left to right to see where im missing frequencies and try to fill those with either chords or FX
Do the kick and the bass have to be at the same volume? That is, for example, if the kick is at -6 db, should the bass be at -6db as well? Sidechained of course.
Groetjes Youri
By using plugins like Decimort, Ohmforce, or any other distortion. A guitar amp is a cool way to go aswel, just make sure you edit them so they dont sound generic
what RAM do you have in your computer? i also ouse logic and i got 8 gb (ram) but it runs very slow and in some projects it stop the music because of an overcharge , thank you for the tutorial nicky!
This is my setup: Mac Pro (Late 2013) Processor: 3.5Ghz 6 Intel Xeon e5 Memory: 32gb 1866 Mhz DDR3 Startup disk: Macintosh HD Graphics: AMD Firepro D500 3072MB Serial number: my laptop is a 2014 model macbook pro with 32gb aswel, the ram is important, but you can also fix this by using a bigger buffer size, try setting it to 512 or 1024 at Audio Settings of your DAW when producing
hey nicky.. funny thing - armin van buuren released a music video called therapy. and there is a model guy in it that looks close to you? check it out...
How you chouse which type of bassline you will have in a song? Is it fallowing the notes from chords or from the melody, and i saw that your sub bass notes are different than top bass.
When making progressive, I always take the lowest note of the chords that are playing in the drop. But there is no one rule, you just wanna make sure it blends well with the chords, if no chords, use the key that you like the most, usually G or G# sounds great in every soundsystem because its a frequency almost every system can display well. Roughly around 50hz is a nice 'punch in the stomach' :')
Please fix the resolution when you're in Logic Pro X, so that we can see what it says. The text is way to small for us to read, it was great on the first episodes!
I use the genelec 8150 but 8050 are great aswel, the smaller your speaker setup the bigger your track will sound on a big system, get your song sound fat on a small speaker setup for ex. 8040 or 8030 and it will sound huge live!
About mixing, I always struggled with making my drops loud with leaving space to the drum and bass, like I always feel it lacks the explosive feel of a drop. Can you maybe show us how loud should the bass be and how to make the melody clear and loud at the end of the project? Thanks for the series man 🙏
It really matters what kick you use, its not a one-way-go if you use a long kick, you should use less bass because the kick is already taking up this space, and when you use a short kick there is more space for bass when you sidechain it. Its really not something I can like give you on a paper, but you have to try to learn your ears what is good. What usually helps is installing magic AB from sample magic, load your favorite drop and keep comparing A/B until you get close. Good samples help also, Splice is a good source of samples!
If I’m still starting out, how to get the vocals of other tracks in order to remix them. I know artists send you vocals of their tracks, but that’s because you’re famous.
Hey, Nicky I have a question regarding making bootlegs... How do you blend the vocals with the chords and right now I'm not talking about mixing and mastering but rather how do you make a bootleg look like one song only, when you just have its acapella.
Thanks for the reply man. What I mean is when you make a bootleg...How do you actually mix it with the chords and melody? Coz I tried making a remix & its sounding more like I'm imposing the vocals on a tune and it's not sounding like a whole song. Please enlighten me on this.
What u r saying could mean two things. 1) You have harmony problems - Meaning the chords you have made doesn't match vocals scale. 2) You have problem with volume lvls. In that case you need to improve your mix - analyze frequencies of vocals and leave some space in that area. You can also try to use compression for vocal track. It will give you more volume control and it is gonna be easier to mix it in your track.
Hey, Aquarius thanks for your answer man. So, can you give me tips on how to actually mix the vocals with the whole melody, I mean compression is great, but what more element resides in making a good song.

Hey Nicky! Thanks for the masterclass. Can you teach how to choose, layer and mix chords in progressive house?
Its hard to really teach this, you need to train your ears to know what gap you miss in the mix, but I usually put an EQ on the master and slide a shelf from left to right to see where im missing frequencies and try to fill those with either chords or FX
Thank you so much :) Should I use FabFilter ProQ2 instead of the FL Studio Parametric Eq 2 for this purpose?
If it's possible to have stereo sound..Thanks
Hey Nicky , as a beginning producer , what would you recommend in order to get better at producing?
Do the kick and the bass have to be at the same volume? That is, for example, if the kick is at -6 db, should the bass be at -6db as well? Sidechained of course.
It depends on the key of the kick/bass. There is no one way rule
