Why is Football Flopping In Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Arabia did some absolutely insane business this year. From Cristiano Ronaldo to Neymar Jr. to Karim Benzema to N’Golo Kante to Sadio Mane and a host of other incredibly experienced stars; too many to mention, in fact.
Take Al-Ettifaq, for example. Even with Jordan Henderson, Gigi Wijnaldum, Demarai Gray, and Steven Gerrard as coach, they had just 696 fans in the crowd to watch their game against Al-Riyadh.
I mean, when you look at what the country is also doing with boxing, UFC, WWE, and the like, it feels different from what’s happening with football. They’re able to fill up the arenas in these different sports, even hosting really distinguished personalities from all over the world, but that’s a far cry from what’s happening with football in the same country.

2 hours if you fly...12 hours by bus ( i did it) not many fans will do this. The big 4 still have big away supports in the big cities...they have supporters all over the country but I don't think they will travel unless its a very important derby or cup final. The problem is the very small supports at some smaller clubs...they have literally no support...like al riyadh. This will have to change.

I've watched some of the Saudi League games and the overall feeling is exactly what you would expect, it all feels very plastic. The best games are obviously from the top 4 best teams bought by the kingdom and then you have basically an abysmal difference to the other teams which also reflects on attendance in stadiums which are pitiful. I thought from the beginning that this was a horrible investment if they were thinking about making their money back selling the leagues transmission rights as even the other best european leagues have problems doing that like the Bundesliga or the italian serie a that has lost a lot of the prestige it once had. Maybe their goal is to clean their name and the associations people make when they hear about them , which may work out for some time but frankly it all just seems like another horrible investment decision by the PIF trying to turn saudi into a tourist destination cause that's the only idea these guys seem to have.

I see it as Saudi Arabia sees soccer as a simple cash grab to clean their image in the international arena. But it’s not just as simple as buying players. Look at Chelsea and Manchester United. So much money spent for the teams to be doing just okay in the league. Whenever I hear about the Saudi league all I hear is the players never the teams. Idc about Saudi Arabia really so why would I give them any attention when I can spend my time and money on better soccer and feel better where my money is going.

Sportswashing impact meant a lot of money must be thrown in order to sustain anything that is not developed organically. This is extremely easy in autocratic regimes, but will be very hard to sustain if not using repression.
Kazakhstan joined UEFA in 2002 after a successful sportswashing scheme and in order to stay, Kazakhstan has bribed UEFA officials and used oil money from the Caspian Sea for their football project called Astana to justify their switch (despite Kazakhstan shares more authoritarian root with many AFC members than UEFA). But its recent success is short-lived, since Kazakhstan has no grassroot football culture. The same tactics have since been adopted by Russia and Azerbaijan, before Qatar and Saudi Arabia followed the same steps. Yet Qatar's 2022 World Cup flop, combined with Russia banned from all football events after the war in Ukraine, showed how vulnerable the sportswashing scheme could be.

There is definitely some footballing cultures there...the local team from almaty got 22000 against Aberdeen. I happened to be in the region and went along to the game. Obviously, the attraction of being part of uefa was very exotic for them...this was 2016 I think. I also saw celtic v Astana and there was a good crowd there too..especially as it was essentially a dead rubber ( celtic won 5-0 in 1st leg). However, the problem is the league isnt that attractive to the locals. This is where the established football leagues have it good..the traditions, the history etc., the good crowds...which attract fans to go...to be part of a collective experience.

With appreciation for the efforts of the channel owner, I can say that much of the information he mentioned is incorrect
Firstly, the change in Saudi football is taking place in stages, and so far no superstar players have been brought in except for approximately 5 teams, and all the remaining 13 clubs are operating according to their previous budget, and will be privatized in stages.
Secondly, Al Hilal’s public attendance did not increase or decrease from last year, and did not decrease after Neymar’s injury. The reasons for the discrepancy in Al Hilal’s public attendance lie in the presence of two government stadiums, one with a capacity of 65,000 fans and the other with approximately 30,000 fans. Both stadiums are dilapidated, and next February Al Hilal will move to a stadium. It has its own stadium with a capacity of 26,000 fans, and it is an advanced, air-conditioned stadium that will increase the number of fans.
Al-Nasr has its own stadium with a capacity of 22,000 fans, and attendance was full in several matches, other than what's mentioned.
Al Hilal and Al Nasr will own Qiddiya Stadium in 2025, which is a huge and very modern stadium.
Al-Shabab and Al-Ettifaq have just started playing in their own stadiums, which are sufficient for 15,000 fans, and their crowd numbers are beginning to improve.
Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahly play in Al-Jawhara Stadium, which has a capacity of 60,000 fans, but due to a number of reforms this year, they moved to play in another old and small stadium temporarily, and in 2025 they will have a huge joint stadium.
The audience increase is coming gradually, not only due to the quality of the players, but also due to the development of infrastructure, television broadcasting, encouraging people to sports, and paying attention to emerging talents, which is developing day after day.

    • @ashleygoggs5679

not many will join for a host of reasons, one reason being europe has the most competitive and prestigious awards. And Two being if saudi clubs cant make profits to fill the wages of the large names they will go bankrupt and it will be the owners and sheiks bailing the clubs out, a little bit of debt for a few big names is one thing but when you have huge names like neymar and ronaldo those wages are going to eat at their pockets. The reason the likes of manchester city and united can afford such players is because they are profittable and can afford it without eating into the owners wallets. This isnt happening in saudi.
