    Why is Football Flopping In Saudi Arabia?
    Saudi Arabia did some absolutely insane business this year. From Cristiano Ronaldo to Neymar Jr. to Karim Benzema to N’Golo Kante to Sadio Mane and a host of other incredibly experienced stars; too many to mention, in fact.
    Take Al-Ettifaq, for example. Even with Jordan Henderson, Gigi Wijnaldum, Demarai Gray, and Steven Gerrard as coach, they had just 696 fans in the crowd to watch their game against Al-Riyadh.
    I mean, when you look at what the country is also doing with boxing, UFC, WWE, and the like, it feels different from what’s happening with football. They’re able to fill up the arenas in these different sports, even hosting really distinguished personalities from all over the world, but that’s a far cry from what’s happening with football in the same country.

    Buying big players doesn't realistically sky rocket a leagues popularity. There has to be a stable setting for the leagues, there's no flow from viewers because most of them are there for watching the big players just as mentioned in the video,by the time viewers start flowing with the league and it's matches,then the RSL will be known as league power all over the world

    The Saudi League is the 3rd most profitable league in the world, and its viewership has skyrocketed by a staggering 650% in the past two years. The primary challenge for the league is attracting more fans to the stands, which is due to the high travelling costs between rivals cities and ticket prices that are almost twice as expensive as the Premier League. Saudi Arabia has a young population, and affording these expenses can be challenging. However, when you look at a derby for example, the stadiums are always full, saying that football is flopping in Saudi Arabia is completely wrong

    I've watched some of the Saudi League games and the overall feeling is exactly what you would expect, it all feels very plastic. The best games are obviously from the top 4 best teams bought by the kingdom and then you have basically an abysmal difference to the other teams which also reflects on attendance in stadiums which are pitiful. I thought from the beginning that this was a horrible investment if they were thinking about making their money back selling the leagues transmission rights as even the other best european leagues have problems doing that like the Bundesliga or the italian serie a that has lost a lot of the prestige it once had. Maybe their goal is to clean their name and the associations people make when they hear about them , which may work out for some time but frankly it all just seems like another horrible investment decision by the PIF trying to turn saudi into a tourist destination cause that's the only idea these guys seem to have.

    Second, All those stars came this year except Ronaldo he came last year to Saudi league. You have to watch the games 3 and 4 years ago. In Ittihad stadium audiences were around 60,000 attended. That’s only in one game . I didn’t mention Alhilal or Alnasser.

    Football is about heritage, rivalries and club culture. For many it is a religion, how do you expect it to thrive in a country dominated by an actual religion? Hosting one time events like boxing matches etc is fine, the spectacle element will always be high there. Ask the average football supporter, "what team does Ronaldo, Benzema, Neymar or Mane play for?" Crickets. Al something will be the most likely answer. If they really want to build football over there they're going to have to build the legacy of their clubs and they're not going to do that JUST by buying iconic players who are going to come there to collect their retirement cheques. There needs to be a broader strategy that includes interclub tournaments at the highest levels i.e. Champions League. Perhaps a multi-region league like the villanised Super League where the best come to compete can work. Having the top 4 clubs from each continent play off for a Global Club Championship would be someting everyone would want to see. Then the Saudi clubs would have a chance to sell some of their truly talented local stars to other teams. The Saudi league could become a great feeder league for youngsters not just an attractive option for players in their prime or nearing the end of their careers. They have the money to make a such a thing happen. Hell I might even book a flight to Riyadh to watch Boca Juniors play Bayern Munich in the Global Cup Final if that ever happened.

    • @graduke1
      @graduke1 Рік тому

      The big 4 already have an established fan base...the problem is that the smaller teams don't have the same support, but I think that will be the next development...to increase investment in the smaller sides. New stadiums will be needed ( and have been been built quickly for the likes of el ettifaq and al shabab) hopefully, these new stadiums and the increase in the quality of local teams and the attraction of seeing the big boys will see the crowds at the smaller clubs take route. Also, once transportation improves that will make attendances go up too ( I hope!) Although the Saudis like their 4x4s so maybe that won't make too much difference. It's going to be hard...as youngsters these days want to associate with the stars for the glamour on social media. However, I think the Muslim societies need a release valve , and football can certainly provide that in the traditionally Conservative societies so while your observation is correct , certain muslim countries have well documented passion for the game eg turkey, Morocco, Egypt eg and even saudi have the rivalries and prestige with the big 4. They aren't starting from scratch...however to build a really competitive league is going to take time...and might well fail if the money runs out...but if they invest wisely...not wasting money on neymars..they can definitely move up the hierarchy. However, I can't see the saudi league really challenging the big 5 leagues any time soon.
