Imagine this . being able to see this great master of bebop every tue, night for free ! Now imagine them teaching you how to play bebop . Then letting you play on stage next to them. I am so thankful growing up in Chicago and learning about music and life from Von and George freeman .On any given tue. you could Come to the " El Matador" on 73rd street and sit next to Betty Carter , Milton Suggs ,John Barnes Pharoah Sonders just to name a few . At 18 yrs. old in 1976 , I would get in line and play the head to " Billie's Bounce " with 15 to sometimes 20 musicians of all ages and levels and then play one round of a solo . If you were hot you could play another round . Go home practice what you learned ,come back next tue. In The words of Von Freeman , " Mellow Baby "

I said, "who's that on piano" why, look it's Young John Young. I knew I recognized his keys. Go John, go Vonski,
    Always

Von Freeman IS Chicago Tenor, channeling everyone from Gene Ammons to Johnny Griffin, but always Von, always Von.,

So, why aren't there 100,000 views on this video/audio? When he plays it, he owns it. Melodic as a descriptor is the kiss of death in jazz, but it allows "the masses" to follow. This guy has it down. His musical "decisions" are astonishing. The masses can follow, but then be amazed and captivated by his solos. Pretty much perfect in every way except for the fact that he is not a household name in generic music.

I love this Von Freeman, and now it's 10-20-2013 my first time listening to him. I used to buy nearly all my early 1960s bebop jazz from the Columbia Record Club and two jazz record stores, one in Beverly Hills and one in south L.A., called Sam's Records. The Blue Note label started putting out such mind blowing guys from the 1940s big band days, whose abilities had never been recognized, but they'd kept up their own styles and were really expressing themselves fully. Great post and thank you.
