Classic Game Room reviews SUPER MONKEY BALL JR. for Game Boy Advance from Realism, THQ and Sega released in 2002 for Nintendo Gameboy Advance. This CGR review of Sega's Super Monkey Ball Jr. for GameBoy Advance has gameplay from Super Monkeyball Jr. on Gameboy Advance recorded in HD footage.
"Looks bland visually?"
For the GBA, this is absolutely amazing. Far better than other 3D efforts on the GBA.
This game was all I played when I was 5. Great memories.
Here's an interesting Easter Egg
If you input the Konami Code on the title screen, the text will change to NICE TRY.
I love how Mark reviews the older games in any series before he actually reviews the more recent releases. That's how every reviewer should be like. CLASSIC GAMES FTW
"You can't go wrong whern you just copy Mario kart"?
Action Girlz Racing and M&M Kart Racing seem to come to mind...
@afterlifeproducer Considering 3D games on the SNES looked like this (e.g. Starfox), I think you're exaggerating a bit there.
i love the bowling character selection song in this game
The music in this game is pretty damn good!
I've made many purchases thanks to the excellent reviews of CGR, the most recent being this title. Thanks again!
I loved this game, it was one of my first GBA games and I played it for ages.
The music was great too.
Damm this looks great for GBA. I have deluxe on ps2 and this still captures the feeling of the console games bravo.
@SmoothCriminalAaron No, the first game was an arcade release titled "Monkey Ball," then "Super Monkey Ball" was a GameCube launch title. "Super Monkey Ball Jr." is based on the levels from those games.
@antinodoctors what empty promises from the raylight tech demo? some of the videos from them were show pieces, that showed the gba could do 3d at the time. raylight tech actually end up making it into a lot of gba's 3d games.
@Doyledeth Okay, sorry if I offended you.
how do you control it? might work better with motion detection.
I recognize a lot of these levels from the Gamecube version. Good times.
I agree that it does look pretty good for the GBA. Great physics engine to boot.
some people may be addicted to food(refering to the ad), but im addicted to classic game room.
I had this back in the day i was really happy when finding it last week.
During the video in my mind I kept thinking, okay Mark, it isn't the end of the video yet, you can stop dying! LOL :D
these graphics are really amazing!
no repetitive gameplay is not required. i play marble madness on retron5 with a nes controller. and the main controller has a joystick.
There's a slight variation of it that unlocks everything, and changes the text to 'Super Enable All'. And the best one, which reduces the resolution but increases the framerate, changing the title text to... 'Super Blocky Mode'! :)
One of my first GBA games. It was my great aunt's and she gave it to me after she got a DS Phat which she eventually traded in for a DVD player. I still have this game, which we just refer to as "Monkey Balls."
The only memories I have of this game is it not working with the D-pad, and being hard to control
I played this game so much as a kid.
@DefinedPerception
you control the tilt of the level trying to controll the monkey inside the ball....that's what make's it special
0:51 dat amazing lens flare
I used to love this game as a kid
@jbaron43: more specific it was an NAOMI arcade game. Playable using a giant banana that was an analog stick. The problem with this conversion it's the lack of analog control that made the gameplay frustrating. Super Monkey Ball Jr. was also on the N-Gage. Do you remember it? The sidetalking? Ahahah I want one now :)
1:12 hahaha The Game Room reference
@FastTquick I don't doubt the GBA hardware. I think I have a pretty clear-eyed view of what it's capable of -- it is, at minimum, more than four times as fast as the SNES, and can push polys (especially textured ones) much better than the old console. But the SNES was designed to impress, and is able to achieve a few things with specialized hardware and clever trickery that the GBA wasn't able to do with raw power even a decade later.
Developers really did great things with 3d and psuedo-3d on a system that was considered comparable to a mini-SNES (on steroids)
@antinodoctors While you're right that bittage is a pretty arbitrary means of describing a system's power, and the GBA's long list of ported titles does suggest that it was intended to serve as a portable SNES, in truth the two systems don't have much in common architecture-wise. The GBA's bus speed, for example, is 16.8 mHz compared to a maximum of 3.58 on the SNES, which allowed it to do 3D effects with sheer brute force that the SNES required special hardware to achieve.
Wow, I'm impressed. I thought you couldn't program polygonal stuff on the GBA.
I used to play this game all the time like 4 years ago :D
YES, MORE CGR!!!
@ignika98 yes, I know this. It's actually stronger for a few reasons, but 3d was never by design of the system, and if you consider the GB, GBA and DS they launch with titles that correspond to 8, 16, and "32" but generations in terms of what the titles reflect.
GBA had a couple racers that I could mistake for Playstation titles. Awesome handheld, and some awesome development
I'm probaly one of the few people who got master legitimatly in this game
Wow, I had no idea the GBA version of Monkey Ball was so good and had levels from the original on GameCube. Damn I missed out on a good portable game.
LOL the monkeyz death scream is awesome
I had this game and I never got past like level 5 ;D but I beg to differ the minigames were very fun especially the one where you get to fly!
eric from texas is becoming a classic game room legend
It's funny I just saw this on Goozex and was thinking about snatching it perfect timing!
Can you use GB Advance, GB Color and Game Boy games on the GBA? Is it backwards compatible?
they really made this work with all digital controls? Cool! Will look for a cheap one if i can find it for my DS lite, thankfully a way to still play GBA carts. Cheers!
This game looks like it would do my head in. Nice graphics for an old hand held though.
The only catch with buying GBA games online (especially eBay), is that there are *tons* of pirate carts out there. I suppose it's not a huge deal if you just want to play the game on the actual system; but there's always the chance you'll get one with a faulty battery or some other hardware flaw. Make sure you're getting an original game cart!
This brings back memories, Thanks for the upload :)
"Super Monkey Ball Jr. is a lot harder than the versions on Wii and 3DS." that's because after SMB2, Sega seriously shot down the difficulty. It took me 11 years to finally beat SMB2 in its entirety (all the way through Master Extra), but it only took me a few hours to beat SMB3D. The insane difficulty is what makes it so addicting and fun.
TayoEXE Did you even got all the collectibles in 3d? That's pretty hard.
The music for this game is awesome for a GBA.
I used to have this game on my GBA. I despised it because at 11 years old I didn't cope well with defeat. That was back in 2002 though. I have the Super Monkey Ball game on my iPod Touch.
is there a gameboy classic version of this?
Actually there's 4 difficulties (Master is the 4th difficulty).
I love the 1st,second and Gameboy advance versions I have all 3 they were my 1st gamecube game. I think they sort of ruined it with Bannana Blitz. But THANK U SEGA 4 THE 1ST 2 AND JR.
@animehatchetman Nice, this gives the GBA a huge and affordable game library.
@antinodoctors those both had the capabilities to present those kind of graphics, but the developers did not utilize them well.
This one actually looks alot cooler, the 3DS version doesn't have lens flare!
@Ioselash That may be true, but it still looks bland.
I am use to him swinging a tennis racket on the 360 sega super stars tennis
you should try playing Yoshi Topsy tubby i tell you this you will enjoy it a lot also awsome review as always
If I saw footage for this game without knowing what it is first, I probably would've confused it for a DS game. The graphics look good for a 2002 GBA game.
@OmegaVesko Hahaha, don't worry about it. I'm sure he's going to make that review soon, anyway.
@MagFlare Why do you doubt the GBA hardware? It was really powerful for its time and there were games that made exceptional use of the hardware released as early as 2001. As powerful as it is, could the SNES produce something like Rayman Advance or Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2? I doubt it.
@dragoniguana nah, you didn't offend me no worries.
@TPCrisis You still play the GBA?
Das hardcore, bra.
@RottenRroses i'm not sure, but i think it is possible
@dragoniguana the system specs arent even that high, it's just a suggestive opinion.
For a GBA game this looks amazing
this looks exactly like super monky ball 1 for the gamecube : o
@TheXLink back in the 50s people builded things under there homes called FALLOUTS
konami code = super nice try
the SUPER MONKEY BALL games are fun as hell but the difficulty curve is extreme one level is laughably easy while the next will make you scream
@Lannnyto Yes I still play GBA titles on my DS. There are some real gems.
Much better 3D than Crazy Taxi on gba
@bierbuik The GBA has about the same 3D capabilities as the SNES. The PS1 had completely different graphics, so while it may look similar, I assure you it isn't. Everything @antinodoctors said is true.
Hey announcer, what's your favorite post apocalyptic game series?
2:00
@NeverendingTwilight1 I think the one for the GBA didn't come out during the time this game was released/made.
Actually it IS 3d graphics! very simpe yes, but the maps are made of true polygons. I have this game too. I've loved all the monkey ball games.
@Mafujalate329 That's why I'm not a huge fan of the GBA. The system had potential for some pretty kickass graphics, but developers never seemed to take advantage of that, or rather very few did.
Is that the same announcer from Virtua Fighter?
Wats the music for the title bit
@S0ryiu Oh snap! That sucks way more than a broken controller :( Hope you get a new one soon
@RottenRroses yes
it looks EXACTLY like the gamecube version of this game, and thats saying something for a gba game
Bland? Looks impressive for the GBA.
Great! Now I have another GBA game to hunt down. Thanks :D
All hail the Mark, lol.
why 240p?
I played the ish out of this game when I was little
Awesome!
This might even have better graphics than your average Wii game.
No flamethrowers?
It's kind of like SEGA's response to Marble Madness...sort of.
Nathaniel Bandy disagrees.
@TheXLink Go to the store and buy a new one, trade in some games you don't like if you don't have the money. You should have gotten it for the PC anyways...
looks goddamn impressive for a GBA game.
i kinda wanna play fallout now. thanks for that.
I bet this would work well on the ipad.
@HTwenty1 Oh lol, I stand corrected.
@TheXLink get a gamestop custom wire controller its kick ass
