      It may not be propaganda in the strictest terms, but this is a highly embellished account of the battle of Fort Henry. Historians have found that the British did not specifically target the flag. All in all, there were about 28 total American casualties. The bodies of dead soldiers were not used to hold up the flag pole. That is a total falsehood in this account of the events. A 42 by 30 foot flag has to be on a well-anchored pole, it cannot be held up by a few dead bodies stacked around it.

      Were the 100% Anglo-Saxon men, who signed the Declaration of Independence and wrote the Constitution. Thinking about Africans, Asians and Latin Americans, when they were doing so? Remember, most of those men owned humans as property at the time. A practice which had been banned in Britain since the 11th century. Also, something which the British at the time, were seeking to abolish in their colonies. What a great time to want to cut ties with the Mother Country.

      @@Cuffsmaster first of all, I think you meant "except" not "accept". I do not accept that most of this story is wrong. I do accept that the story as told here was told in a way to stir the American soul. This story made it sound like many died when in fact, only 4 brave men died and 24 more were injured. 330 British soldiers were either killed, wounded or captured. The incredible part to me is that Britain suffered nearly 14 times more casualties than the American patriots. This was during the war of 1812 when Britain came back mad that we were succeeding as a nation. While 4 deaths and 24 injuries may not seem like a lot to you what I see is 4 strong courageous people left this world too early. That is the point, people have died to as BP said give us the freedom to live the lives we get to live today. It's about gratitude to ALL who have served, bled, and died for that principle.

    My 8th Great Grandfather, Christopher Crary, was twice captured by the British. The second time, he was imprisoned in one of the prison ships, where the conditions were so squalid that most prisoners died from disease and starvation. Christopher escaped from the prison ship and returned to the fight, serving until the war was won. He's an inspiration to me in times like this, when those who have never endured tyranny seem willing to surrender the freedoms our ancestors sacrificed everything to give us. Democracy is fragile. Our resolve to defend it cannot be.

We did not win our freedom with pen and paper, we had to fight the greatest naval and military power at the time and lose many lives to do so. It was by God’s grace that America came to be,if we had lost,King George could have very well had those men put to death for treason or in prison. Yes we should celebrate this day with jubilation and songs of freedom and thanks giving to our Father for life liberty and the pursuit of happiness,but let’s not forget to remember the labor pains America endured to birth this Nation 🇺🇸

      You left out the fact that if France didn’t bankroll us and give us troops, ships, and $$ we would have been screwed. It took a long time for the US to become a “country” and were really a loose confederation of states. So that presented a lot of issues with different states and who pays the soldiers and who doesn’t. That’s why there was mutiny a few times. They were especially angry about having done a year or two and hadn’t been paid while new recruits were given bonuses and pay. So they got extremely angry (justifiably).
      That’s part of why Benedict Arnold defected to the British. He fought and spent $10,000 out of pocket on different campaigns with Congress agreeing to pay originally and then afterwards giving him a hard time. Then he was injured twice in the same leg. The last one happened when he rallied the troops and single-handedly won during Saratoga while Gates twiddled his thumbs. That’s when the French agreed to openly help us. Then Gates went and said he did it all by himself. They also accused him of using his position as leader of Philadelphia to “enrich himself”. That was the last straw. After that he defected.

      You know why that is? Because the British common law is the DNA of the American Constitution. The American Revolution basically held up a mirror to Britain's own standards, and found them lacking, and re-established them in a purer way, in a new land. And not only have the Brits taken a few meaningful looks in that mirror over the last couple of centuries, we have also faced common enemies together that threatened civilization as either of us knew it.

    Great reaction. I don't know when they stopped teaching this in schools but I remember learning about this in school in like 2nd or 3rd grade & it made me proud to be an American back then! When football players started taking a knee during the national anthem, I stopped watching football. They were flat out disrespecting the men and women who sacrificed their lives so we all could live free. No, we didn't treat the Native Americans or Asians or Blacks right in the beginning but we realized the error of our ways and grew as a nation and changed. Blacks in America have it much better than their cousins back in Africa who sold their ancestors into slavery. Asians, Latinos, and every other nationality or ethnicity who came and added their culture to our own has only made us stronger as a nation and more inclusive than any other country in the world. The fact that in Los Angeles alone there are more nationalities represented than at the UN shows how much of a melting pot we are. Most Americans cannot trace their ancestry back to one country, nationality, or ethnicity, but instead find that they are a mix of many different cultures, peoples, and ethnicities. I've had ancestors on both sides of both world wars, yet I'm able to find pride in both cultures, and still be proud to be an American. Our great seal says it best, E Pluribus Unum ~ Out of Many, One.

      And (at least when I went many years ago)…. a video telling the story is shown at the visitors’ center. At the end of the video they naturally play the Star Spangled Banner. The right wall in the small auditorium is glass but covered with curtains. As they slowly open during playing/singing of our National Anthem at the end of the video, there is the replica 15 star and 15 stripe flag still flying.
      To be there and hear the story, then the National Anthem is played and unexpectedly have the curtains drawn back to reveal a replica of the same flag flying on the staff was pretty emotional.

    As the teams from all the countries
    paraded in front of the King, lowering their flags in respect, the American didn't. When asked why, he said- "This flag bows to no earthly king."

    • @dominicbuckley8309

      To the rest of the world, the US attitude to the flag is very strange. Every other country also believes that their flag is sacred: at a funeral, battle or a contest, laying the flag on the ground is *not* a sign of submission, but of consecrating the ground and imbuing it with the ideals of that country. The flag is more powerful than the ground.
      For the US, a flag touching the ground means the flag has been desecrated, made dirty and has to be burnt. It is patriotic, but only on a superficial level, as it implies that Americans think the ground is more powerful than their flag.

    • @Tijuanabill
      @Tijuanabill 27 днів тому +5

      @@dominicbuckley8309 No. Nobody thinks that. What are you talking about? We don't think any flag is "powerful". We think letting something sacred get dirty, is bad. It's the same reason you dress nice for church, or that the priest doesn't show up all dirty. If you are doing something sacred, it should be done cleanly. By your logic, we baptize babies because they are weak. Like...could you miss the point more? Is it even possible?

    • @dominicbuckley8309
      @dominicbuckley8309 27 днів тому +1

      @@Tijuanabill You have literally just proved my point. Americans think of lowering the flag as 'letting something sacred get dirty'. Every other country in the world sees lowering the flag to the ground (usually in salute to the fallen) as _the flag making the ground sacred_ . Of course, we're not talking about accidental dropping (which is always bad), but a deliberate salute performed at funerals and memorials. In the past, it was also done prior to battles or contests, as a symbol of making the ground your own.
      To use your baptism analogy: to the rest of the world, the US attitude to lowering the flag is like saying that a baby shouldn't be baptized because the holy water would get dirty.
      Anyways, from an historical point of view it needs to be pointed out that the US attitude to lowering the flag did not date from this incident. It actually became a tradition during the Civil War, but was not made official until the Flag Code of 1923.

    When I was a youngster and didn’t know anything about the star spangled banner I remember the first time hearing it it brought me to tears and 41 yrs later it still does . We are American first and foremost , respect 🫡

    One of our local news stations here in the Chicago area interviewed several people who had just become citizens. It was either on July 2 or third of this year and there was one lady who said Americans don’t know how good they have it and that is why people want to come here. We need to all listen to that message and one of the quotes in this video, that Americans will die on their feet before they live on their knees. We do not need a dictator. We need to save our democracy.

      Why are you going to have a Dictator?

      Fine. Except bother reading the founding documents. We are a Constitutional Republic not a democracy. We are living under a Facist president right now. We need to get back to our founding MAGA!

    I thank you for taking off your hat and respecting the anthem. My husband served in the Navy for 30 years to protect the rights of fine Americans like you.

    BP, and you didn't think we were here.....we are ALWAYS here for you. I love this story and am so very proud to be an American. That feeling gets stronger every year I get older. No matter what our troubles are in the United States, we ban together and come out victorious. Happy 4th to all of you !
