- I have been hearing this Prolong charger for quite some times and finally decided to pull the trigger for the name of science, Prolong charger suppose to stimulate the NiMH cell and improve the overall performance, let's see what it can do to this battery pack with around 70K miles.

Thanks for taking the time to test the Prolong product! That is a great result, especially considering only did one charge cycle was performed. The charging process will equalize the voltage of the cells in the pack and deliver a small increase in usable capacity, but only a small portion of overall potential improvement. If the pack was also discharged a couple times, the increase increase in usable capacity will be much more - and longer lasting. Deep discharging the battery pack to a lower voltage than the car does is what breaks down the voltage depression and restores lost capacity. The combination of charging and discharging together is what is called reconditioning. This video was a single charge and balance cycle, a full reconditioning treatment will deliver a larger and longer lasting improvement. When a full reconditioning treatment is done, the benefit usually lasts for 9-12 months. Hybrid Automotive recommends repeating the reconditioning process every six months to 'reset' that 9-12 months clock again and again and keep the battery performing it's best, delivering multiple years of prolonged life.
Hi Jeff.. I must be doing something wrong with my charger and discharger as I have not gotten good result after 3 cycles... after the first 24hrs I got back the lights on dashboard. I am lost to the next move. Please help me.
@@remaldorose5079 this device will not restore faulty modules, only extend. You likely have bad modules that need replacing.
@@JasonLeef33dm3 Long Story Short. This device does absolutely nothing besides giving false hope. Once the battery is degrading, it is already permanent damage. You are like getting out juice from rotten lemon. You may get some out but practically it will not make it fresh again. For $400, safe your money and get real whole new battery for about $2000, and install it to get another 12-15 years good life of hybrid car or even longer if you live in colder climate or garage kept.
@@rondhole Where are you getting new batteries for $2000-2200? A number of us are looking decently priced new batteries but they all seem to be over $3500
@@mickm5097 Import Authority, Tallahassee, FL offer New battey replacement directly from Toyota dealership parts. They offer it for $2800 few years ago for Prius 2006. I believe they will take all old cells out and put new cells in but we have to return the old battery through them to Toyota dealership. Now, I am in Frankfurt, Germany. For Auris 2015, exactly the same battery and powertrain as 3rd gen Prius they quoted me total with labor 2350 Euros. With the same deal, return old battery for recycling. NiMh battery is more than 60% recyclable, not like Lithium battery.
Just started using the full charge and discharge kit. I had no warning lights but the signs were there that the battery was losing some power. I have used NiMH and Li batteries in RC flying for years and know that these batteries need balancing once in a while to make them last. So it's not snake oil like one rube says. So after using the charger, my battery is now well balanced and the car has more pep and better mileage. It worked!
I recently did a single charge - deep discharge - charge cycle on my 8 year old, 100 000mile Prius C - and got from 73% to 100% according to Dr Prius. But went a much cheaper route, using an LED Constant Current Driver as the high-voltage, low-power supply. A DIY Grid Charger in other words, and a 60watt light bulb as a discharge load, taking the pack down to about .9 volts per cell.
Would you please drop a link for LED power supply you used? Also how long did it take to finish one cycle?
pls link us up!

I didn't see you remove the negative battery cable as described on the Prolong website
The cutoff voltage is 240 volts for the 2010 Toyota Prius
Thank you I watch both of your videos .what the name of the charge and this charge equipment ?where do you buy them?
hybridautomotive.com/product/prolong-deluxe-reconditioning-package?aff=4
I believe this called 'Top Balancing' - it gently overcharges the cells in order to bring them all into balance. It's the equivalent to 'equilising' a SLA battery.
Hi i just seen ur video i no its very old video but for me its new , can u plz tel me how much cost u to buy this charger nd where do i go to buy this charger plz let me no sir
What obd2 connector did you use for dr Prius app?
Hi plus u not disconect orange service plug ? Just why i think ur battrey voltage show 214 vots ?
If you don’t leave the cover on the top of the battery pack the fan will not cool the battery sells while you’re charging. Maybe that affected why you didn’t get a better charge
Pretty cool. I just inherited a 2011 p4. I think it has original hv battery and 240000 miles. I suspect I need to do some maintenance!
48 hours charge is way too long.
Also this is an over simplification.
This charge should be utilized with the discharge process up to 3 cycles.
What tablet are u using i use a iphone and it does not speak directions
From where i can get this prolong charger in pakistan
Why are my test results only a white watermark stating dr Prius?
3:35 looks to me like it's still charging?? .355A going into battery?
Do i need gloves if i want change connectors
I bought my 2010 Prius 4 with 196k miles, was getting horrible, 43, fuel mileage, I ordered the Prolong charger/discharger, ran the charge/discharge cycle as described and instantly started getting 50+ mpg As I started learning pulse/glide, I have seen as high as 67mpg on a 15 mile trip, car has 226k on it now and just had to replace a couple modules due to a P0AA6 code, I had 2 modules shorted to ground. Replaced the modules and got an instant p0a80, so I hooked up the Prolong system, ran 3 cycles and no more code, back to getting 50++ mpg
Hi. Can I purchase this in the uk
Is it not better to recondition the battery then this?
Isn't this reconditioning?
Good Video- Thank you!
To prolong battery life, get a car garage and park it there. The main killer is heat from Sun when you park a whole day. Most prius in North last 50% longer than in southern usa with hot humid summer
Right man. I bought a prius from the north and a prius from the south. My Northern prius is a rust bucket but the most reliable car ive every freakin had! My prius from the south looks cooked. The clear coat is damaged and the battery is on its last leg. Since there is no rush im going to go ahead and fix the clear coat and replace the battery with lithium cells. But yea the south cooks these batteries if they arent in a carport or garage. And driving around in the summer without having the A/C on. You can always tell the performance difference when its hot outside or when its more on the cooler side.
PRIUS HYBRID BATTERIES OPERATE AT 116-118 DEGREES
THE BATTERY FAN WORKS UNLESS THE FAN IS NOT SUCKING ENOUGH AIR
THIS IS THE TEMPS
@@21boxhead that's why we must turn the AC on in any hybrid. It's part of the cooling
@@rondhole I HAD MINE ON FULL BLAST COLD I LIVE IN LAS VEGAS STILL THE BATTERY TEMPS GETS TO 116-118F
@@21boxhead yes, it is normal and fine. They will last at least 10 years if you keep the fan clean. If you always keep it in garage it will last 15 years 500k miles or more. In UK, they have 15 y warranry unlimited miles because they rarely have sun
The Prolong website specifically states do not charge to 48 hours
Wow from 41.9% and you were able to get it up to 65.8%!? I purchased a used 2012 Prius V today and now finding out about this prolong kit. It really makes me nervous now but also understanding and learning a lot about these hybrid batteries. I really need a garage because I understand the temperature will hurt the battery life.
MY PRIUS HYBRID BATTERIES OPERATES AT 116-118 DEGREES
Hi there, can u explain the color's cells ? Green, Yellow, Light green, ?
Can you just specify the software that is used to test battery? I think that shall be the proper way to test my battery before I decide to buy a charger. Thanks ☺️
It’s called Dr. Prius on the apple store, also you can go on their dr Prius website to look for a Bluetooth obd2 compatibility
I am considering getting this for my 2005 prius . with the dr prius app, it is showing a 65% state of charge
Save your money and prepare to buy a battery instead. $1000, your ass is covered for the rest of your Prius life. State of charge from Dr. Prius apps is not accurate. it reads high after you are in long high way speed trip, and low when you are just goint in town. After all it is 2005, It is time for recycling it. 2nd Gen Prius typically have 10-11 years battery life in hot climate and about 15 years in mild climate. MIleage does not really matter but if it is always in the garage kept, they tend to last longer.
Check this guy video update. His battery at the end is indeed just dying and he needs replacement. This device does not safe him anything besides $500 extra spending. Check GreenBean Battery if you are in USA. If you are in Europe, go to Toyota dealer and it cost no more than €3250 installed with recycling. program. But it is 2005, it worth less than €4000.
@@rondhole thanks!! iw il check out the green bean battery.
@@motiahmed8972 But don't buy if it is not broken. Trust me, just keep driving it, I saw many pass 15 years 400k miles with original battery, really depends on how it was used. Just prepare the money if you need it. Mine died after 12 years 240k miles in hot Florida and has no garage. I sold it after putting $800 used battery. I still can drive it around for more than 400 miles before getting battery replacement. You are not going to be stranded when the battery is completely died. You still can drive the car safely but with less torque and power.
@@rondhole One thing though if purchasing a $1,000 hybrid pack, is they are composed of used battery modules that have been reconditioned. Who knows maybe the pack last you 30 days, maybe 6 months. Please tell me where one can find this Hybrid pack for $1,000 with a lifetime warranty. I have looked all over.
is this good for all prius ?
I would also like to know
@@thetorvic21 yes
D better thing to do is to charge and discharge d battery pack I will get this charger with d 2 bulbs to do discharge cycles to truly recondition d hybrid batteries.
i got this charger it work nice for one battery but on my second battery stared having problems send it back they took 45 days to send it back i try to charge my second one and display doesn't work and no charging have to send it back again
It's exactly like slow charge and discharge in nimh battery that can regain temporary additional capacity. I think it's not useful enough for most people. The only solution is new battery from Toyota for about $2200 and repack it your self and get another 12-15 years of you park in garage or non hot area. You can see from His #2 video, his battery is still dying after all and need replacement after Prolong illusive reconditioning.
ok but this charger is like $500 whic is a fraction of that cost and it will keep the car alive. for a high mileage prius, 2200 is almost the value of the car ?
@@motiahmed8972 But it does nothing, just an illusion. A dead battery will still be a dead battery. You need to get one and it is realatively cheap from greenbeanbattery for instance. 1000 dollars transferable lifetime warranty. $500 is already 1/2 price and $500 more is just like buying a set of good tires. Don't give false hope, get a real thing.
@@rondhole on a dead battery you are probably correct but if your battery is low like this situation then it seems worthwhile ? This is basically rebalancing the load as well between the banks
@@motiahmed8972 Hybrid battery has 15 years warranty unlimited miles in UK/Ireland or about 10 years in the rest of the world. It is aging and chemical process that increase the internal resistance. Yes with Dr. Prius, you can check it. That's the most important parameter, not the paid battery tester with an incorrect diagnostic of battery condition. Just drive your hybrid in highway regularly, it will cycle the hybrid battery fully. OIl and ATF change, HV battery vents cleaning yearly helps you more than anything else.
@@motiahmed8972 It is your choice to dump your money on such a device. $500 is a lot. I won't buy it even if it is $50, too much unnecessary hassle for the placebo effect.
get a recondition or new battery and call it a day less headache lol. a dead battery is a dead battery
Battery was not dead though.
Without discharging each module below 1v is just a waste of time.
1v? is this for real?? men you kill it. Charging in series??, the car do it all the time.
This is not using the prolong charger to it's potential. Additionally the prolong charger is not at all the optimal way to recondition a hybrid battery. There are way way better options.
That à shit
have you thought about installing it permanently so its like a plugin prius upgrade
also i had an idea how about using a 12v lithium battery to power a AC inverter to run the prius hybrid battery charger, installed into the car so its like a plugin EV mode range extender !
basically make our prius's into DIY plugin EV's and then charge them off solar and be living the off-grid dream on a budget driving around on free solar power
