Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at for the first time ever "Un Peu Plus Haut, Un Peu Plus Loin." PATREON request said I should take a look at these three stars: Jean-Pierre Ferland, Céline Dion and Ginette Reno sing this song. Stunning and very emotional, I had to take a break midway, see if I got to finish this reaction!

This song was written by Jean-Pierre Ferland in 1967 or 69 and its about a love rupture. He wrote that in a hotel room in Paris while beeing completely demolished emotionally. He calls it an Hymn to hope. Gave that song to Ginette Reno and the rest is history

@@carlbernaquez3449 It's also about climbing - in position, in fame, climbing so far up that you leave the ones you love behind, going where they cannot follow... and being all alone on top, afraid of falling down if you try to reach for them, while at the same time, being so awestruck by what you've achieved! All alone at the top, seeing the wonders of the world, not wanting to let it go, but losing what you love for it. Being an international star, constantly touring around the (francophone) world, adored by thousand of women, did not help Jean-Pierre to keep his long-distance relationship alive.

This was part of a Celine Dion show for the 400th anniversary of Quebec City. As part of her show, she did several duets with several important Quebec singers, probably none more important than Jean-Pierre and Ginette. As others have mentioned, Jean-Pierre wrote the song. It was Ginette's song. This is Ginette's son. (That's why everything shifted in her court, as you say.) Jean-Pierre also sings, but he's what is called in French a chansonnier, meaning the texts of his songs are more important than his vocal abilities (which have indeed been affected by age). PS - What you're seeing from Celine isn't sadness. It's emotion. Ginette was young Celine's idol. And this song... this song isn't about the words so much. They're about pride in being Quebecois.

Ginette had everything for her, jean pierre whrote that for a show on top of mount Royal the sky broke open, it’s a song talking about someone going up to heaven and not able to come back, it’s a sad song, but a great song, she could have had a carer like celine with rené Angelil, but she was stuck with lovers that took adventage on her and i think she had a kid too at the moment, so she pass on the international career, but she sang all her life she is like our diamant only for us… sadly you wont be able to listen all jean pierre ferland repertoire, but it’s incredebly rich and soo great !

There is a big emotional story also between Celine and Ginette. Because at first it was Ginette who was René Angélil’s protégé, she had the voice to go international and this was Angélil’s project to do so but Ginette didn’t want to and decided to pursue her career in Quebec , Canada leaving Angélil with his international dream without an Artist to pursue his ambitions. After that he couldn’t find a singer like Ginette, he was loosing everything until he met Celine when she was 13 years old, then he figured out he had the possibility to pursue his dream with Celine. On her side Celine wanted to be an international artist…. The rest is history.

The song, to me, has always been about someone wanting more, wanting to be bigger, wanting fame and fortune and leaving a most cherished one behind in the process. She wants to climb higher, go further. She says let go of my arm but keep hold of my hand. Then later, without meaning to, she's the one to let go of the hand. She cries out 'Look, I'm so high, it's beautiful''. I love you, I'll come back to you, if I can climb back down without falling. I still love you but I don't see you anymore, I'm too high, you're too low.

This moment was quite special and emotional... This concert was for the 400'th anniversary of Quebec City. 400 000 people were there. Ginette Reno is the first signer René Angelil, who became later the husband of Celine Dion, was manager for. Ginette had a wonderful career, but choosed to continue signing in french and not pursue a carreer in English, in USA. So René Angelil began to manage the carreer of Celine and the rest of the story is well known. This moment is the reunion of those 2 marvelous women. Ginette is really loved in the Province of Quebec. Her presence at this show was a total surprise, so you can now understand why her persence made people so happy. A warm "hello" from one of your follower from Quebec City, Canada. (Sorry if I did some English mistakes, for I'm french speaking person and don't write often in English)

Yes, Jean-Pierre Ferland is the songwriter of “Un Peu Plus Haut, Un Peu Plus Loin”. He is a good singer but not the best male vocalist, so yes, Céline did overtaken him but she has such powerful voice.
Jean-Pierre Ferland is an awesome songwriter, he has written so many hits over all the decades of his career. He has written hits for himself first but for others too like Ginette Reno and a very young Céline Dion. He is iconic here in Québec. And he has a knack for writing those deeply emotional songs. Now, he is mostly retired (he is 87) but no one has forgotten him, far from it. Ginette Reno is still singing.

Also at his age, his voice isn’t what it used to be. That’s why he kept on announcing his retirement. He kept missing the stage so he did a few comebacks. My dad repaired some of his antique furnitures back in the 80’s-90’s and Jean-Pierre invited him to do some horseback riding. My dad declined the invitation but he still talks about how nice he was.

This song can have a lot of different interpretation, someone's passing, how life can change two people and then separate them, etc. There is also a political/nationalistic uundertone to the song, it was written during the quiet revolution here in quebec. In that decade, Quebec emancipate itself from the catholic church; schools, hospitals became public, education was made widely available and a lot of the public institutions we have today were created at that time. French-canadian became proud of their culture and their unique heritage in nord america and the english superiority over the french speaking part of the population became less and less important. So, Jean-Pierre Ferland was in a way celebrating every opportunity his people had nerver have and now had but at the same time, thinking about the fear of losing a part of ourselves in all those changes.

Québécois singers have perfectly succeeded in mixing and synthetizing the tradition in french de "la chanson française" with good written texts and the tradition in english of the great north american voices... that made their music so beautiful, so typical, peculiar, and emotional.

For me, it sounds like people you love can not always follow you through the course of life as sometimes, we are not at the same level of consciousness and can not make the moves and decisions we know are the best for them or vice versa. Un peu plus haut, un peu plus loin
A little higher, a little farther
Je vais aller un peu plus loin
    I'll go a little farther
Je veux voir comment c'est là-haut
I want to see what it's like up there
Garde mon bras et tiens ma main
Hold my arm and my hand
Un peu plus haut, un peu plus loin
A little higher, a little farther
Je vais aller encore plus loin
    I'll go a little farther
Laisse mon bras, mais tiens ma main
Leave my arm but hold my hand
Je n'irai pas plus loin qu'il faut
I'll go no farther than needed
Encore un pas, encore un saut
One more step, one more leap
    Une tempête et un ruisseau
    A storm and a stream
Prends garde, j'ai laissé ta main
Watch out, I've let go of your hand
    Attends-moi là-bas, je reviens
Wait for me over there, I'll be right back
Encore un pas, un petit pas
One more step, one small step
Encore un saut et je suis là
One more leap and I'll be there
Là-haut, si je ne tombe pas
Up there, if I don't fall
Non, j'y suis, je ne tombe pas
No, here I am, I'm not falling
    C'est beau, c'est beau
    It's beautiful, it's beautiful
Si tu voyais le monde au fond là-bas
If you could see the world, right down there
    C'est beau, c'est beau
    It's beautiful, it's beautiful
La mer plus petite que soi
    The ocean, smaller than oneself
Mais tu ne la vois pas
    But you can't see it
Un peu plus haut, un peu plus seule
A little higher, a little more alone
Je n'veux pas être loin toute seule
I don't want to be far all alone
Viens voir ici comme on est bien
Come see how good we feel here
Quand on est haut, oh comme on est bien
When we're up there, oh how good we feel
Un peu plus haut, un peu plus loin
A little higher, a little farther
Je n'peux plus te tenir la main
I can't hold your hand anymore
    Dis-moi comment j'ai pu monter
Tell me how I managed to go up
    Comment descendre sans tomber
And how to get down without falling
Un peu plus haut, un peu plus fort
A little higher, a little harder
Tu es trop loin, je t'aime!
You're too far, I love you!
    Adieu, adieu, je reviendrai
    Farewell, farewell, I'll be back
    Si je redescends sans tomber
If I get back down without falling
    C'est beau, c'est beau
    It's beautiful, it's beautiful
Si tu voyais le monde au fond là-bas
If you could see the world, right down there
    C'est beau, c'est beau
    It's beautiful, it's beautiful
La mer plus petite que soi
    The ocean, smaller than oneself
Mais tu ne me vois pas
    But you can't see me
Un peu plus haut, un peu plus loin
A little higher, a little farther
Je vais aller encore plus loin
    I'll go even farther
Peut-être bien qu'un peu plus haut
    Maybe a little higher up
    Je trouverai d'autres chemins
    I'll find other ways
    c'est beau
    It's beautiful
(Si tu voyais le monde au fond là-bas)
If you could see the world, right down there
    Au fond, là-bas (c'est beau, c'est beau)
Right down there, (it's beautiful, it's beautiful)
(La mer plus petite que soi) The ocean, smaller than oneself
La mer plus petite que moi (c'est beau, c'est beau)
The ocean, smaller than oneself (it's beautiful, it's beautiful)
(Le monde un peu plus haut)

@Dereck Reacts I'm so glad you liked it and that it touched you without understanding the meaning of the song while reacting to it ! I cried like a baby when I first saw this. It's so emotional on so many levels. Because of the meaning of the song first, and most of all because it was the first time that Céline had the chance to sing with Ginette, who was her idol when she was young, and whom René was the manager just before he became Céline's manager. So it's like the ultimate loop in Céline's career. Singing with the biggest star from Québec when she was a child, now that she is the biggest star herself, and singing with the woman that René managed before her, who, if he didn't stop manage her first, who knows what may have come to Céline's career ? That's why she can't help crying during the song. So so touching...

You might want to check out this version from 1975 played at the Quebec National Holiday in Montreal. It ended up being a defining moment in Quebec's musical history. It is a toned down version, less orchestral where the voice is the central piece. It shows how good Ginette Reno is: ua-cam.com/video/90YHdWGyesk/v-deo.html

The story behind this song is that ginette renaud stole the show of a whole festival by singing it with 10 time more emotion then this in the 70's ( when Québecois started to affirm themself as a nation) and Ginette was the blueprint for celine dion. When ginette refused to go world wide, is manager took celine and applied is plan to celine and made her what she is now... genitte is the original celine dion

Ginette Reno published her first album in 1962, and she still sings at 75 years old. That is almost 60 years of career. Very few singers from the 60's are still singing today. Her voice is more powerful then Celine.

English below. Thank you for taking the effort of opening up to our French Canadian music and culture! It was very touching to witness how someone who doesn't really know us, nor understand our language can be so moved by our music. We love to describe life in our songs and are not shy to develop on our emotions. We have a lot of artistic talents, although Céline Dion and Ginette Reno are our pearls and Queens. We see how it is important for Céline to honor Ginette, of whom she is an heir in many ways. And yes it was Jean-Pierre Ferland who composed the song and who was also singing, although he never had a huge voice, so he started the song and left the space for the two queens to sing. He was in heaven, it showed. So was everyone else. And my understanding of the song is of two lovers for whom higher achievements are leaving him/her alone and is separating them, so he/she asks the other one to make a few steps higher, a jump and says that he/she will take a few steps down, hoping not to fall, but to reach a place in between where both can see each other and be together to witness the beauty that can be seen from soaring above the world and life. - I discovered today a musicologist, Dereck, truly open to diversity, whom I will have great pleasure in listening to his analysis and heartfelt discoveries. Merci! Thank you! :-)

in this sole video, you have a wonderful piece of the Quebec and French international music History. Jean-Pierre Ferland, one of our pillars songwriters, among Félix Leclerc, Gilles Vigneault, Claude Léveillée and some others. Céline, our most acclaimed singers around the world. and: Ginette, the true Queen, who opened the way for Céline as before her, she had René Angelil as manager and refused to sacrifice all for having the career Céline has today. 3 monuments, 3 essential parts of music, 3 huge God-given talents and eternal artists. quel bonheur et quelle fierté d'être Québécois comme eux! and Ginette, it's my very personal opinion, IS the best singer in the world.

One thing that really stands out is how powerful Ginette's voice is, even in her middle to upper age. She didn't lose any of her vocal range and the emotion of the lyrics drives her performance. It's clear that Céline stands in awe of Ginette and recognizes her talent and lingering devotée of fans. You don't have to understand the lyrics to feel the raw emotions in the song. Ginette put her all into it, even unto the last note. What a phenomenal performance by a dynamo singer.
I've been reading other commentators saying Ginette could have had an international career. She did have it. She won awards at Cannes and sang in London and on the BBC and released several English albums. She recorded an album in France: "Ce que j'ai de plus beau" which contained the hit "La Vie." The accolades are numerous. She also received the office of the Order of Canada.
This is, without question, the very definition of "international stardom." I myself first heard Ginette sing "Beautiful Second Hand Man" (1971) on the radio as a child, and even as young as I was -- she made an impression.
Her talent is and always will be on par with Céline's.

On June 24, 1975, Ginette Reno performed Un peu plus haut, un peu plus loin in front of 250,000 people on Montreal's Mount Royal as part of the festivities (St-Jean-Batiste Day, our Quebec Day ). What was a wounded love song has become a hymn to hope and the emancipation of a people in an explosive political context. “Contrary to what everyone thinks, it's a song of separation, assures Ferland. There is therefore a whole socio-political context of the time that is extremely important. The rise of the Parti Québécois with the objective of separating Quebec. The interpretation with Celine Dion remains just as touching and makes a connection with the fact that Ginette Reno has already had the same manager as Celine Dion, but unlike Celine Dion who has become an artist known throughout the world, Ginette who will have chosen not to go a little higher, a little further... Their interpretation remains masterful and gives a whole new meaning. Céline Dion struggling to hold back these tears. The text of this song, although simple, remains extremely powerful and full of meaning and will have been the hymn of an entire era in Quebec.

Jean-Pierre Ferland is 87 years old and Ginette Reno is 75 years old. Ginette is one if not the greatest singer we have. This song was first interpreted by Ginette and Jean-Pierre in the late 60's. You must try 'ceux qui s'en vont, ceux qui nous laisse" by Ginette Reno.
