Skinningrove Jetty was built of slag in the 1880s for the export of pig iron from the ironworks on top of the cliffs to Grangemouth in Scotland and to the continent. Between 1848 and 1865 when the railway arrived ironstone from Skinningrove Mine was exported to County Durham and the River Tees from a wooden jetty nearer the village. The concrete pillbox used to be higher up the cliff but erosion has caused it to fall onto the beach and it's now upside down. Many years ago I met by chance a chap on the beach who said he spent quite a few nights in that pillbox with a Bren gun waiting for the invasion that fortunately never came. Near the bridge by the base of the incline railway used to be a pumphouse and other plant with masses of smelly water pouring onto the beach but that ended in 1971 with the end of ironmaking at the works.
Good morning Neil interesting video of the erosion of our shorelines when I was up that a few weeks back Bob Taylor showed me where it’s all given away and local fishermen climb down on ropes was amazing to it thanks for sharing 👍👍🙏
Hi, Neil! Very nice video ... lovely beach. Love all the puppy-prints in the sand. That rock with all the layers was really beautiful. Isn't Mother Nature amazing? Hope y'all are doing well! Amy xoxo
