My 1st train I got was for Christmas in 1968, I was 7 years old, Tyco/Mantua steam set called The Iron Horse, It was based on a Tv show by the same name. I still have it and it still runs great. What has really made it special and I didn't know at the time and found out years later was that my father had always wanted a train set but his family couldn't afford one, So he not only got it for me , he also bought for him and it was both of our 1st train together.

I received my first Train set in 2014. It is an Allstate Mechanical Train set, Model 9740. My youngest Daughter gave it to me for Christmas that year. She got it from her Elementary school rumage sale. I had mentioned to her about taking her to the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. She declined, but brought the train set home a couple weeks later. We set it up around the Christmas tree that year. I suppose, she thought I was interested in model trains. I wasnt at the time, but I have recently ( the last year or so) been thinking of taking up the hobby. I am now estranged from her, but take the set out every now and again to imagine her laughter and smiles for a few moments. I watch a few channels like SMT trains, and Sams trains, and a couple others. I have been looking at perhaps getting a small set in N gauge or TT120.

I received my first train set Christmas of 1981 when I was 7 years old and it was the Tyco Chattanooga Choo-choo set #7318. I received it from an aunt and uncle who lived in Chattanooga Tennessee at the time and when my family would visit them we would always go see the Chattanooga Choo-choo train terminal in downtown Chattanooga. The terminal is now a hotel with lots of rich history about the terminal and city of Chattanooga on display. We still drop by there as well as the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (TVRM) whenever we are passing through that area and I highly recommend checking them both out anytime anyone is in the Chattanooga area. I still have my Chattanooga Choo-choo train set and enjoy runnning it with my son (now 10) who enjoys trains as much as I did when I was his age and still today. Thank you for a great channel and for reviewing/repairing many of these great treasures from the past.

Nice train set. I have two sets, one steam and the other is a diesel. Do you live in Tennessee? I'm on Ohio now, but was born and raised in TN.

My first train set was an HO Bachmann Golden Spike set. It came with an Union Pacific GP-40 diesel #866 with a UP reefer car, Great Northern stock car, Canadian Pacific coal hopper, a Quaker tank car and a UP caboose. It also came with a plasticville station, signal bridge, plastic figures, road signs etc. with an oval loop of track and a siding. I think I received it around the time I was born, but didn't use it until I was 9 years old, around the time I got my first Lionel O gauge set, which was a New York Central Flyer set with Railsounds. It was really great set to get started with, plus over the years it allowed me to learn how to repair my model trains as needed. I still have it, even though it doesn't get much runtime compared to my newer trains. I plan to fix the cars some more to get them back into service.

I am in my mid 40's and my first set was last Christmas. I picked up the Bachmann Rail Chief to go around the Christmas tree and was hooked. It was special because I set it up together with my daughter and in no time we had it hauling candy canes and Hershey kisses around the tree. 😂
Being a Tyco slot car fan it was a natural progression to start picking up old Tyco trains. I really enjoy working on them and getting them running again.

Love the Silver Streak trainset, looks so cool. My first trainset i got, was during Cbristmas of 2021. It is a Bachmann Santa Fe Trainset, it comes with a FT diesel, a UP Gondola, a D&H Hopper, and a brown and yellow Santa Fe Caboose. It was only a circle of track, so naturally I bought some used straight track for it at my local hobby shop. Now this set is important, because it sparked my obsession with collecting model trains, before I was hesitant to start a layout/collection, but ever since then I finally have a reason to start a collection. Since then I now have 8 locos, those are as follows
    1. Bachmann FT as previously mentioned
    2. Athern Bluebox UP Dash-9
    3. Tyco Santa Fe Alco C630
    4. 80's Bachmann Santa Fe F unit (Non-running)
    5. AHM C-Liner (Also Santa Fe)
    6. 2 Life-Like GP38-2 locos, Santa Fe (Broken), and CSX (Dummy)
    7. Tyco GP9 shell in Yellow paint, (forgot the road name)
I also have a lot of old used freight cars, I love collecting vintage freight cars (especially boxcars).
That's the history of my collection as of now, I have videos of my collection on my UA-cam Channel.

My first train set was a bachmann trainset from1979/ 1980.It may have been a special dealer edition Georgia Pacific set.It came with an santa fe
U36b #350 ,an heavy duty flatcar with logs and a rock island hopper wide vision caboose and i belive a swift reefer and a dual crossing gate with blue power pack with yellow contril knob
I havnt been able to find it anywhere even in catalogs
I believe it was a special Georgia Pacific set that the retailer had and was unique to their store, but it was the old 79 or 80 version bachmann released another special georgia pacific set in the mid 80s in white and red boxes with a gp 40 santa fe, mine was in yellow boxes. Idk but its not in any bachmann catalogs that ive saw, maybe im missing it, the closest thing to it was the silverado set. Maybe it was that one but with different cars than in the catalog..Bachmann did that sometimes. The u36b was a pancake drive ....the log car was a 4 truck heavy duty log car and was blue..the caboose was red and yellow with roof walks. It came with brass track and we expanded it with moore track and a tyco kellogs covered hopper a tyco railbox box car and a tyco The Rock crane and boom tender. It also came with a freight station. We nailed all the track down on a 4x8 piece of plywood..I thought it might have been the santa fe version of the King of the Road set but that one didnt come with a crossing gate and a building but mine did..I know it was around 79 80 or 81 that i got it.. i sure wish i had kept it. The newer mid 80s georgia pacific set is availae used right now on ebay i believe for around 400$
Very rare set both versions..the newer one comes with a coronet car ..and bachmanns offset streamline cupola cabooseand a atsf gp40 instead of u36b
I just remember something about it saying georgia pacific and my grandpa got it at a hardware srore he always went to in Clayton county Georgia.

Years before we met, my wife had saved a few of her dad's model trains including a Tyco Silver Streak C430. Might be a rehab project down the road so it can join other Alcos on my layout.
If memory serves, my first train set was AHM Thunderchief (Baltimore & Ohio), followed by Tyco Over & Under (Santa Fe). Both are long gone but childhood memories eventually convinced me to get back into the hobby years later. Nice collection of Tyco tank cars. Considering current prices of rolling stock, it's difficult to comprehend $0.99 for the Texaco tank car. Wow, bring back that pricing!

Well I’ll go off of HO gauge. My first HO set I got when I was a kid, I don’t remember how old. But it was a hawthorn village marine train set, which I thought was cool cause I’m big into military and history. And since then the collection has grown

Great video! My first set was the 1982 Life-Like Campbell Soup train set. I don't know what happened to the original locomotive shell, but I was reunited with the drive for it several years later, and it now powers a second Campbell Soup set that I bought!
The oil tank could have easily been sourced from Bachmann, or its manufacturer. My Campbell Soup sets have a boxcar from Bachmann tooling (but in a Life-Like box), and the tank car is from Pemco tooling! That one took quite a bit of searching, as it closely but not exactly resembles the Tyco tank car!

My first train set was a Lionel set received for Christmas I think it was 1963 or thereabouts. It was a simple circle layout with a model steam locomotive, tender, couple of cars and a caboose. Jump ahead many years later to around 2002 or 2003 and I bought my kids a Bachmann HO scale 'Harry Potter Hogwarts Express' train set and that reignited my love of model trains. Kids are grown up now and I still have that Hogwarts Express train set. Bought a Bachmann HO scale 'Rail Chief' set a couple of months ago and I enjoy it too. I found a Tyco Silver Streak loco at a local flea market/antiques emporium unfortunately it turned out to be a non-runner so I turned it into non-powered rolling stock and pull it around with my GP40 model loco the Silver Streak loco looks snazzy in the setup.

Lionel Thunderball Freight Train set for Christmas with a plywood board my dad mounted more track than what the set came with. There was a sheet of “grass” on it that gave me splinters. Nothing of that set remains as I played with it very hard. My wife still has her Lionel Blue Streak Freight set and it still works to this day. What are the odds? I have a very very simular story to you, but I got my first train set for my birthday in 1986. Now that I am 42 as well, my Santa Fe F7 had split nylon gears. CE glue and baking soda, with a minimum amount of filing around the gear teeth; my first loco roared back to life. I also converted it to DCC and updated to LED lighting while I was in there.

I got the silver streak as my first set on 79 Christmas. I got my use out of that set as a kid being my first train. So 2 yrs ago I saw that train set on ebay and little behold I bought it and 1500.00 worth of accessories I think tyco should've put this set in in a city expander layout with pipe loader unloader and a few other accessories. I got many buildingings to go with it. Wouldve looked great in an industrial setting. I also like your idea of a chrome special edition too. Tyco wouldve stayed in business had they had creative thinking ideas like these.

The cars were the great northern flat car with the 3 tractors, the 50 foot pulp wood flat car, the Hershey's Reefer, a Burlington Northern green 50 foot boxcar and a matching Santa Fe caboose. The track was a figure 8 over and under setup. I cherished that train. Unfortunately it has long been gone from my posession. I have been looking for a complete set of it, but I can't find it.

You made a blooper on one of the tank cars. You called it "Sunco" You left out the middle 'o' from the word. Sun-O-Co is the acronym for Sun Oil Company = Sunoco. My first train set, still have it and it works, is an original A.C.Gilbert American Flyer "S" Gauge train set. I received on my 6th birthday in January 1957. A 4-6-2 w/tender, box car, flat car, tank car and caboose. When power was applied to the rails, the brakeman would move into the lighted caboose.

My first train set was an Athearn Hustler set. It contained the hustler loco(red) , caboose, gondola, and stock car. Mom and Dad had a good sized dinning room table. It was large enough to hold the loop of track. I sat at that table for hours running that train. Finally had to take it back to the store as I had to have the rubber bands replaced.

I remember just dreaming about that set lol I wanted that set so bad for Christmas and I seen it at KB Toys in our mall and little did I know my parents seen it as well and told me all Christmas season they couldn't afford it that they were getting me some old ho scale set from a flea market and yeah I was disappointed by that as a kid because man I really wanted that TYCO silver streak set just the chrome and red as a kid I mean wow did that set stand out! But anyway sure enough on Christmas morning under our tree was a huge square box and I knew there was one thing I wanted came in a box like that I tore that thing open as fast as I could on Christmas morning and sure enough it was that TYCO silver streak set man was I excited I played with that thing for years wore it out and I actually still have it today runs excellent! Anyway that's my first train set story! TYCO trains are just awesome I loved em when I was a kid and still love em I can put that silver streak set on the tracks and run it today and man does the memories just come flooding back!! First let me help you out It's Sun Oil Co. So it's pronounced Sun No co or if you look in the yellow diamond with an arrow thru it; Sunoco ! I was cringing just a little lol I was pretty entertained by your idea but when I got my Silver Streak I was drawn to the glow in the dark Intermodal crane piggyback loader so I begged my mom for it I NEED the Silver Streak !! Let me back up though She wasn't my first train !! In '76 I turned 11 and I had a grandpa building layouts up in his attic first in HO and then N but he told my mom those cars are too delicate for little hands . If he wants a train get him a Lionel So I asked Santa for a Train I didn't specify I just said train but mom playing Santa Claus didn't wanna chance that I'd hate what Santa brought me so she followed us kidd to the toy section ( there were 4 of us 2 boys and 2 girls ) so I had time to look at them and I like two so I showed her two ! One was the Lionel Thunderball freight I liked it coz it had a steam engine and a green caboose ( just like what passed our house ) I seen this set on TV too and the boy on TV was on the box it HAD to be good !! Well Christmas came and we raced down the hall to see what Santa brought and I didn't even have to open mine it was sitting under the tree ready to go YAY!!!! You wonder why it wasn't running ?? Coz it had the Sound of steam ( the ball bearings kind ) and I would have heard that but, I got to run it immediately 2 loops coz other people had gifts to open !! I got a couple other things but not much !! I still put a Lionel up under the tree and I bet my kids will too!! The Next year I got TCR Total Control Racing Lighted Blazers that's why I was drawn to the Silver Streak in 78! Mine incidentally, didn't work my grandfather the train modeler couldn't fix it and didn't wanna void any warranties and sent it back Slot cars won out again I got the X-wing Death star Jam set I think it was also TCR but I could be wrong !! I have a Silver Steak and caboose now not the whole set ! I just wanted to modify the caboose with windows and real chains across the steps and add lights inside !! One last thing I would have wired up the diesel horn !! HAVE FUN !!!

In the Meantime I'm adding glass (acetate) to the silverstreak caboose and a few other details and trying to make handrails for the locomotive!! The Alco C430 is one of my favorite locomotives !!
