FD RX7 Gauge Cluster & Interior Update and Drive

  • In this video, I wrap up the gauge cluster and dash LED light conversion and address the issues I came across. Unfortunately, a few of the sockets needed to use the standard E74 bulb (see link below) instead of the LEDs. After that, I get most of the interior back in the car. I have been so anxious to drive the car after this long interior restoration. So, with the interior mostly back in the car, it is time to take it out for a rip! I also stop by a local car meet to hang out.

    I changed all the dashboard lights of my old Land Rover Discovery, for LED. I don’t know if it’s because of their quality (or lack of, since I bought them from China), but they gave so much problems (not lighting, flickering, being to bright, etc) that I decided to go back to the original ones. The car looks new. Congrats.

    Hi Matt the way you yanked the e-brake on looked like a lot of travel in the lever. Makes me think it needs some serious adjustment to tighten it up. On my car (Ford) my handbrake (UK speak) is fully engaged on two or three clicks max. We were always told to hold the release button in when applying the brake. My apologies if this is teaching you to suck eggs. I couldn’t live with the wonky steering wheel!

    Is that your ABS light on while you’re driving? Mine is on too right now; I isolated my issue to the front driver abs sensor. Brakes lock up in that condition which I’m sure you know. Nice work man!

      The ABS system is disabled on my car. It came that way and I haven’t dug into why. I have an ABS delete kit. I may remove the whole thing to clean up the engine bay. Thanks!

    have you tried sanding the tops of the leds with fine sandpaper to mist up the lens, it helps defuse the light and looks better when lighting up guages

      I’ll look into it. The ones I picked up have good distribution. I’m pretty happy with them so far.

    This content is amazing, I really enjoy how in depth you get and the time you take to thoroughly explain what you’re doing or using. I’ve always wanted a FD RX-7 and the time has finally come for me to pull the trigger on one. Hoping to secure a RHD model within the next 6 months, your videos will be gold for me when i begin to work on mine, keep up the good work!
    One question for you: why not single turbo swap with the engine bone stock? It’ll clean up the engine bay and allow more time to save up for a proper rebuild while still respectively enjoying the benefits of a single turbo. Obviously wouldn’t be able to push it too far but I don’t hear many good things about the stock ECU and sequential setup.
    Cheers from Florida!

      Glad they will help. That’s one of my goals. I actually haven’t showed it yet, but I do have a new standalone ECU. My thought process was to get that first and I can adapt the build along the way. So I will go single turbo eventually and do the ports and all of that good stuff, but to make the car more reliable now and along the way, I spent my money on the ECU. I can probably run a reliable 300 hp (max) on the stock twins until I have the money (lots of money) to pull the engine and do the full rebuild.

    Replace the seat with new ones, TJ hunt is letting go his RXZ stock seat which is in good condition

    • @IconGarage

      Mine are in decent shape for now. They look worse in camera than in person for some reason. I will eventually get them redone with real leather or something like that which is probably cheaper than buying a seat from TJ.

    Love seeing how far this car has come. I recommend these LED bulb replacements, have them on my FD and they make a huge difference: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HQFCPN7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    • @IconGarage
      @IconGarage  4 роки тому

      Are project cars ever done? Lol. The most expensive and time consuming parts lie ahead of us. When I pull the engine, I will more than likely have to ship the short block off for all of the machine work. The body work will be the last thing or occur while the engine is out. Nothing set in stone, but I need to save some $ to do what I want.

    Good Job. Now get rid of that stupid Ricer Bunny kit and put something else on there like the Feed replica kit from Shine.

    • @IconGarage
      @IconGarage  4 роки тому

      I just spent $5,000 in necessary parts for engine and drivetrain! The body kit will have to wait, but I will eventually go to a new kit. I am thinking about the old Burnout style kit that Shine makes a replica of.

    I keep hearing about the transmission tunnel getting hot, in FD RX7's is this a USDM FD RX7 thing? Because my Stock JDM FD, the transmission tunnel never gets hot at all for me.

    • @IconGarage
      @IconGarage  4 роки тому

      Not sure on any differences between RHD and LHD other than RHD driver side is over the exhaust. Mine is JDM, but it didn’t have the stock carpet. I know the padding in the stock FDs is pretty thick so it probably does a decent job. Mine had an after market carpet with thin pad and it got really hot. Might depend on engine mods too. Completely stock cars hold a lot of heat under the hood.

    • @Tsukki345
      @Tsukki345 4 роки тому

      hmm, I guess with the factory carpet being thick as you mentioned I don't feel anything, as for underhood temps being high, oh yeah that's indeed true, it's like opening an oven for sure after a spirited drive. I suppose I better thank the stock carpet for being thick for the heat insulation.
