That app is such a great planning resource and helpful on the trail too when I get into "are we there yet" mode. 😂 It's great to be back out there. Thank you for checking out the video!
Hey JG! Great to see another video on the OT. You must have filmed this in late fall or winter. The black fork shelter is a great place to get out of the wind if needed. Thanks for sharing this section. Until next time, take care and god bless
Hi! It's always great to be out on the OT...that trail has certainly dug its way into my soul. 💙 Good eye on the season! We did this hike a while back, but I just finally got around to editing the video.....I'm such a procrastinator. I'm hoping to get one more video out before another attempt at taking on my nemesis, since trying to shoot this "how to" series while on a thru hike can be a bit much. Thank you for your support and always watching!
I'm so glad you found the info helpful! Looking forward to getting this series finished up on my Thru hike next month and getting the info out there. Thank you for taking the time to comment. ❤️
Great video, as always. I'd rather see you on the trail, but this is the next best thing. Looks like Jessica decided not to bother switching into her Crocs for the 72 water crossings. I've gotten into the habit over the last couple years of starting at or before sunrise every day. It's great to watch the trail come to life.
Thank you! We really enjoyed this hike an were thinking about you further up the trail from us. Luckily Jessica's not a big shoe changer, to that's definitely a plus for continuing a consistent pace. I do like getting an early start on the trail, but the problem is that I equally like sleeping in. 😂 Thanks for taking the time to watch, and we'll see you in October!!
We felt so honored that y'all hiked halfway up Wilton Mountain just to say hi. We need this darned weather to cool off so we can get back out there on the trail. 💙
I was thinking Wilton Mt for solar eclipse section hike! Are there any vistas up there without trees in the way? Thanks for very informative video and we hope your ankle is on the mends!
Hi! Thank you for commenting! Wilton Mountain has a good sized open area at the top with no trees to obscure your view. I will say that I already know of quite a few people who plan to go up to the top of Wilton to watch the Eclipse, so it (and the trailhead) might be pretty crowded. I would think that Suck Mountain will also be crowded. Thank you for the thoughts on my ankle. It's doing well and I plan to try the thru hike again next month. Excited! I'll be finishing up this youtube informational series on that hike but if you're interested in following the hike to see how it's going, I'll be posting daily video clips to the Jetgirl Hikes Facebook page.
Great to see you back out there! Planning to hike the OT in the Fall and love all the information attached. I'm driving from DFW. Sounds like you recommend leaving the vehicle with someone instead of the Eastern terminus. Any suggestions?
Hi! It's so great to be back out on the OT. For a thru hike, I like to leave my car parked at the Bluebell Cafe in Story then have Lori shuttle me to the starting trailhead. That way, when I get to Hwy 27, Lori picks me up at the trailhead (it's about 4 miles from the Cafe) and I have my car right there to change out gear, drive into Mt. Ida for any groceries, and stay in a hotel/air BnB for the night. Next morning back to the Bluebell for breakfast then Lori drives me back up to the trail. (Also, if things aren't going as planned...like my ankle, I don't have to shuttle all the way to Pinnacle to get my car) It works out really well. The Bluebell is around 5 hours from DFW. Please don't be afraid to ask if you have any other planning questions, I'm always happy to help!
Thank you for the informative video. I am curious why spending priority was building shelters every 10 miles vs. bridges to allow safe passage over the many creek crossings? Perhaps part of a long term plan?
The Kiamichi sits in a Wilderness Area, so all wood, tools and other supplies would have to be hand carried in, no power tools are allowed (maintaining the trail through there means we have to cut fallen trees with hand saws and cut grasses by hand with sling blades). There's also a host of requirements regarding what materials can be used to build the bridges, so it all makes building bridges a tough endeavor. Some of the other more difficult creeks further east like Crystal Prong and Red Banks for example had bridges, but they keep getting washed out (the large I-beams still sit at the bottom of the Crystal Prong swimming hole). Hope that information is helpful.
You're very welcome! That's awesome that you're going to thru hike it! I plan to do a thru Spring of 2024 and finish making this series. Perhaps we'll see you out there!
Nice catch!! This hike was back in February, but me being the master procrastinator that I am, finally got around to editing and posting it months and months later. 😅 Thanks for watching the video!
Thanks for the Far out lesson too! Glad to see you back on trail!

Love the sunrise scene! Well-done on the video!
That sunrise definitely made the early morning a treat and thank you for the compliment....next up, the Womble!
JG RETURNS!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
🎵 Dun dun duuuuuun!! 🎵 😂
Definitely felt good to be back on the OT! Thank you for watching and for your support.

You posted this in August, but leaves are off the trees and things are not overgrown. What time of year was this?
