They were smart. Waited until after the show to spend money on things they can do themselves. If you can style your own wigs, and well, why spend extra money in that department when there’s SO much more to spend money on, right? They’re really busy now and likely didn’t have the time to design a wig for the finale, so spend that money on QUALITY, especially because since they know how to do it, it has to be made better than they’d be able to do, if they’re gonna spend the big bucks on it.
I feel like it’s because they have the doll aesthetic that the cheaper wigs work for them so they can have that doll like hair! But good for them for upgrading too!

Also the expensive human hair wig is paid for with post-season coin, and they likely had only synthetic wigs while on Drag Race
