I dont immediately need the storage space but I know as life goes on we all tend to accumulate junk so this will be a good start for storage.

Thank you Jay for the excellent idea, I was contemplating buying a garage storage unit from Costco but your design works great and cheaper than $222.00. I would recommend to others to use lag screws to attach to the ceiling to add strength.

For those that are looking for a place to store long items, I did the same thing in my old garage, only I pulled it way out to 8 ft and was able to store sheet goods on one side and 8ft long lumber. I learned real fast that laying sheet goods flat was not the best idea I ever had, but at least it got it up off the floor

I've been looking for some storage solutions for over my garage door. I am definitely going to do this. Thank you so much. It's funny how when you buy a house, a lot of the projects shift toward things you need for your home. When you own a home, you never run out of projects.

Hi Jay, I have started building the Overhead Garage Storage Shelves in my garage. I built a 4 ft one above the door to the basement and found that the cleat attached to the ceiling got in the way when I put stuff up there. So on the ones down the rest of the side of the garage I put the cleat on the outside of the shelf brace. This seems to be working better.
Thank you for all your inspirations.

  • @woogaloo

Nice guest bedroom you built there. I'm at a similar stage to you in that I've grown tired of my one-circuit basic garage space. I just caught up on the electrical and now you go and fill another one of my Saturdays with a no-bogus above-door storage space on the cheap. Keep up the good build, and I'm a huge fan of your approach to projects and Sketchup tutorials.

  • @1972Russianwolf
    @1972Russianwolf 8 років тому +5

Nice. I learned long ago that storage like this should be done with wire mesh for the bottom if at all possible. makes seeing things easier and prevents dust and debris from accumulating. Wire shelving for closets works great and usually has a piece that you can hang things from when you need. But it does cost a bit more.

Hey Jay. great video and thanks for all the cool shop ideas. Not sure if this was mentioned previously however a good tip for working on a ladder in this area is to DISCONNECT/disable the garage door opener to prevent a family member from opening the garage knocking you off the ladder by accident. This tip is from a close call experience I had while building a tire rack above the door. luckily no one was hurt but I did need to change my shorts after. lol

Thanks again Jay Bates I just got around to building this. Worked out amazing and going to build more. Happy I had the riving knife to rip the 2x4. Pinched when cutting. Used a spacer to measure off the wall as well which was easier for me. Perfect project for those w/o big tools though. Handsaw and drill! I used 2'x4' sheets of plywood so didn't have to cut them

I put in similar shelves when we moved into our house 12 years ago. But, with 11-foot ceilings, mine have 4 feet of height. They do accumulate a lot of stuff over the years. A suggestion: put doors on the fronts to keep out dust, etc.

Jay Bates I know some editing software has plugins to remove the "fisheye" if ever you want just a B camera w/o it - but I really like the look of the wide angle, I feel it tells more of a "this is the whole picture" type story.

Pretty much the same thing in my garage... It's a great place for off-season storage. Snow shovels and sleds go up there in the summer, and patio chairs and tables (disassembled) go up there in the winter. And so on.
I used 3/8 or 1/2" osb (I forget which) on a frame of 1x2 stock. No sag after 10+ years. I put double-decker shelves on the opposite wall over the nose of the van - holds all my winter tires, as well as other stuff.

I'd say you made pretty good use of an otherwise flimsy situation. Nice shelves. 2:35

your neighbors dont mind the noise at night!? mine go crazy, but I have to listen to their kids screaming all day when i'm trying to sleep (I work nights). Love seeing the new additions to your shop =]

ausguitarist Most of the property around here is about 1 acre or more so the houses aren't really that close. Thanks for watching :)

Gr8 vid. Just what I needed
    Based on what I saw
Per 8 ft section of 4x8 plywoodor osb
    Supply list ?
    Not include drill or saw
    1 - 4 x8x 1/2 inch plywood
    3 - 2x2x8
    2 - 2x4x8
    - Stud finder
    - Wood Screws various lengths
    3 inch
    2 inch
    1 inch
The section on the wall above the garage door is 12 inches section cut off the plywood where the plywood will lay.

Duhh, my supports aren’t 12 inches on center to be able to do 36 inches, Mine are 24 inch on center so I would have to make the support on the ceiling at 48in from front So that just means I will have to adjust the design some .

      Built
      ua-cam.com/video/D4H0vSzvEHc/v-deo.html
I ended up using 2x3 instead of 2x2
And apx 1/2 inch plywood. And 4 inch lag screws and wood glue.
