What exactly do you mean? Do you mean how can someone get right with God? If this is what you mean, accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour. Or do you mean how can someone who is already a Christian live in sync with the Spirit? If this is what you mean, turn away from all sins, pray continually and read the Bible a lot, and you will make progress in living in the Spirit.
@dhsjdjjsk KFJDSJS I just came across your question today. Have you found any satisfactory answer to it? Open your bible to Leviticus 18:11 and read what it says then check google for any cross references (i suggest you go to biblehub.com). I trust once you have done your own study your then mind will be enlightened as far as your query is concerned. Be blessed.
TRUE CHRISTIAN Thank you. I have to remind myself that others out here have rituals, cultures and beliefs that they have to unlearn and may be confused about. P.s. I’m a sister :)
Forget everything that John Piper says about Ephesians 1 for 3 hours and slowly go through it verse by verse multiple times and allow yourself to have questions and not make assumptions about who the “we, us, and you” are. Remember ALL scripture is FOR YOU but NOT ALL scripture is TO YOU. Ephesians one is written to the believers of the Church that is in Ephesus. Remember Paul writes letters to specific people and groups of people for specific reasons, in service of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The modern chapter divisions must be ignored when we are reading scripture to UNDERSTAND what it is SAYING on the page. The original purpose of the original author to the original audience in the original context that it is written. Cross texts to keep in mind, some are used for general context and some are used to give understanding to verses or sections: (John 16 & 17) (Acts 10) (Acts 19 & 20) (Paul's Epistles) (Romans 1:16-17) (Habakkuk) (Romans 8:9-11) (Romans 8:18-25) (Romans 8:28-30) (Matthew 7:21-23) (Revelation 2 & 3) Breaking down Ephesians 1 Verses 1-2: (Paul's Epistles) Paul uses his standard greeting almost all of his epistles begin with him appealing to his office of apostleship toward those whom he is writing except for maybe the Thessalonians and Hebrews if he wrote Hebrews which it is highly possible. Verses 3-12: (Romans 8:9-15) (Romans 8:18-25) (Romans 8:28-30) (Matthew 7:21-23) (Romans 1:16-17) Before assuming the we and us include the Ephesians read all the way through to verse 12. In Romans 8:23 Paul states explicitly what the “adoption” itself actually is. So Paul says “we/us” (not assuming who the we and us are) “in Him/in Christ” (the most important qualifier) were chosen before the foundation of the world “THAT” (this is connecting the people chosen to the purpose for which they were chosen) and that god has predestined (the) us TO adoption (Romans 8:23). He opens saying people were chosen to receive blessings and then he goes on to list all of the blessings. One of these blessings is the mystery which was made known “TO US… THAT” (connecting the mystery made known to them to the reason for which it was made known) God’s purpose might be fulfilled. Then Paul lists more blessings which are available only IN CHRIST. “THAT” WE WHO FIRST TRUSTED IN CHRIST “should be” (connecting “we who were the first to hope in Christ” according to the ESV which demonstrates that this refers to the first people to believe in Jesus to “being”) to the praise of His Glory. QUESTION: Were the Ephesians the first people to trust in Christ? You will find your answer in the Gospels, in Acts as well as in Romans 1:16-17. This is not the only clue within Ephesians 1 itself that demonstrates the Ephesians are not included in what Paul says in verses 3-12. Keep reading. Verses 13-19: (John 16 & 17) (Acts 10) After Paul discusses all of the spiritual blessings that seemingly he and the apostles were chosen for and predestined to receive along with “the mystery” spoken of in this passage which I believe is shown in Acts 10, Paul then states that the Ephesian believers ALSO received all the blessings AFTER they heard the Gospel and having BELIEVED it, being placed in Christ by the sealing of the Holy Spirit which brings with it promises, blessings and inheritance. Then he goes forward stating that he prays that God would give them the spirit of revelation having the eyes of their understanding opened THAT they may know God’s great power towards BELIEVERS (not unbelievers unto belief). This may or may not have something to do with the mystery, but it definitely has to do with the blessings. But if Paul was talking about the Ephesians earlier in verses 3-12 not only would the Ephesians have to be the first people to trust in Christ according to the text, but Paul has totally FORGOTTEN that all these blessings and mystery were already made known to the Ephesian believers and have been fully realized by them, therefore his prayer is redundant and makes zero sense. You have been predestined to know that 2 + 2 = 4 and the fact that 2 + 2 = 4 has been revealed to you, therefore, I pray that you may know that 2 + 2 = 4. The rest pretty much talks about how awesome God is and all of this is only because of the power he worked in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Paul is known to forget his cloak places (2 Timothy 4:13) and sometimes who/how many people he has baptized (1 Corinthians 1:16), BUT he DOES NOT forget the TRUTH revealed to him by the Lord of Glory who appeared to him on the road to Damascus. He was not won to Christ by the Calvinist definition of “regeneration” but by Jesus LITERALLY appearing before him, rebuking him, blinding him, and commanding him to the service of the Gospel. Paul was Zealous for God before he believed in Jesus but he had the veil over his eyes (2 Corinthians 3:12-16), Paul also says “I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died.” (Romans 7:9). If everyone throughout the bible and today are by the immutable, pre-determined, sovereignly chosen, and unchangeable decree of God pronounced dead (Paul didn't literally die after the law "came alive" in him, he is obviously talking about spiritual death) before we are even born, then how was Paul once alive? He is obviously talking spiritual life. If he was regenerate how could he die spiritually? I think if you are honest with yourself and hold the actual text of scripture above John Piper and the "giants of the faith" you know the answer. Also, when Paul turned to the Lord as he lays out in 2 Corinthians 3, the veil was removed. (2 Corinthians 3: 12-16) So we have the question: what came first? Read all of 1 Corinthians 15, he discusses what came first and why it matters. When Jesus appeared to him Paul responded in belief not due to some internal extra working of the Holy Spirit, but because Jesus “pulled up” and said “Cash me outside howbowdat.” And Paul having seen God, whom he was zealous for, knowing the disobedience, sin and blasphemy that he had committed against Him, and he “understood the assignment” and said “bet, full send.” Thomas also did not come to believe in Jesus due to some inward effectual working. He said “I will NOT believe UNLESS I SEE and TOUCH the wounds. And God being merciful, Jesus allowed him those requests and he believed. The bible believers issue with Calvinism has nothing to do with free will and exalting men, it has everything to do with THE AUTHORITY OF SCRIPTURE and WHAT SCRIPTURE actually SAYS and the propensity for the Calvinist to run from it. I do not make this comment to belittle, to hurt or to be rude. But this is how iron sharpens iron, if you have ever heard the sound of metal being grinded against each other, I have worked sharpening knives for 7 years, and been to the factory where they make our knives. it is not a soft sound, as brothers and sisters in Christ we must be able to in love, including tough love come together and seriously take our understandings and compare it side by side with the text of SCRIPTURE. Not RC Sproul, not John Piper, not John Macarthur, not AW Pink, not even AW Tozer or CS Lewis which neither of those two are reformed. But ONLY SCRIPTURE. We must put our money where our mouth is when it comes to SOLA SCRIPTURA! God Bless and may the piece and love of Jesus Christ be with you always! Hebrews 2:9
I just can't find it in commentaries and other places, but here's my question: who is the "us" in verse 4? Is it Paul and the apostles? Is it Paul referring to himself and the apostles and the original disciples? Is the "us" Christians who have accepted Jesus? Or is the "us" the Hebrews, the Israelites, the family line God used to bring Jesus? The way that Paul talks about the Hebrews and the gentiles later in Ephesians makes me wonder if the "us" is the Hebrews. Please please know I am not asking for any other reason than curiosity to understand the scripture better.
Amen, Glory to God in the Highest. Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior. Hallelujah.
