my father fought the war with an panther at the 1.SS Panzer Division, Leibstandarte. He was at Charkow, Kursk , Caen, Falaise, Ardenne , Hungary in March 1945. He had to change the Panther only one time when they agreed with General Patton to leave the tanks back(no fuel anyway, and the 1.SS Panzer went back over the Rhein River for new weapons and equipment. He got a new panther, with infrared light for night fights. The Panther was a with a good crew a killer machine, compare to the Tiger II which was called the life insurance. The Tank never broke down and got countless hits from T34 and Sherman’s and Churchill’s without get damaged. During the 1945 offensive at Hungary he was named at the Nazi News, Wochenschau, taking out eleven T34/85 in just 15 minutes. Later the same day they faced two IS2 which hit his Panther twice on the front. Big dent and noise but they took out both IS from around 1,000 yards . However, the battle for Vienna end of March 1945 he could not participate because one IS Tank hidden in a house hit him from around 500 yard at the side . Because of lack of half tracks his Panther was ordered for surveillance and moved slowly in the village. Two more Panther were 300 meter behind him and 200 meters behind the Panthers three King Tiger followed with some infantry. The rest of the pack recognized the villages was a trap and each house was occupied from an IS . The driver and radio man could make it out and burned, the tower crew made it out but got killed running for cover. Guess my father was lucky because he was not able to run, he lost the left food but did not realize it and felt all the time when he wanted to run as well. Eventually he was saved from Hungarian civilians which hide him till the other Panzer came after took out all the IS Tanks camouflaged in the houses of the village. At the German field hospital they took out all the metal shrapnels and amputated his left lower leg. Shortly later the Russians took the field hospital and he was a POW for the rest of 1945. Actually, the Russians gave him good care which was for SS not always a guarantee. In 1946 he walk out of the POW Camp , on his crutches , and the guard asked were he like to go? He answered in Russian he want to go Home to Munich, Germany. The guard gave him a pack of cigarettes and wished him good luck for the 900Km walk.....the rest is history.....

Last time I checked, Wittman can be credited for 27 destroyed armored vehicles of which 12 can be categorized as tanks.
The allied lost 22 Cromwells, 5 Sherman (4 fireflies) and several m5 Stuarts. That just the tanks. Furthermore they lost a large number (to some sources up to 30)
of armored cars, halftracks and bren carriers . 217 Men KIA/MIA/WIA
German losses 6 Tigers and 2 Panzer IVs. 21 Men KIA/MIA/WIA
In terms of personal the allied had 10 times the losses.
Wittman was awarded. 100 alied officers and leading personal
were removed from their positions and reassigned.
Furthermore half of the video material you used is from the Swedish postwar tank mobility trials. The Panther competed against a Sherman and a Churchill in the original video. The sherman failed on almost every obstical that the Panther mastered easily. The Panther was much faster in light to heavy terrain than almost every tank you mentioned. Even claiming that the horribly underpowered m26 is faster than the Panther is pathetic.
For someone dealing with historical fotage on such a professional level, your are very badly informed about the historical context.

A vehicle with such beautiful lines and awesome power, it can be said that it even looked futuristic compared to other tanks of the time. No wonder the M1 Abrams has more than a few characteristics and details and that are obviously taken from the Panther.

The panther (Ausf.A) starting at 4:27 must be an Allied test vehicle considering two facts 1) that there's an operational Sherman in the background @ 10:58 and 2) its been modified. Some of these features include non standard headlights, a bar/ladder welded to the front right hand side of the glacis plate, its missing all its external accessories (including both stowage bins) it also has a small oblong box attached to the rear turret. It would make a good subject for a modeler.

MorangRus. Panther was still lower profile than M4 Sherman though, but yeah, t-34 was much shorter in height for a medium. Those sloshy tracks as they return over tops of bogies, i noticed how loose they seemed too! Maybe a couple too many shoes? As long as they stay on i guess...there's a science behind it all that depends on terrain conditions & speed i suppose.

Fabio Ganassini but the Panther was the Best and most modern . The French Army took over 3,000 of them after the war and kept them till 1956! My father was in the war with the Panther and Said they called the KingTiger a Life insurance but loved the Panther more. They where mentioned in the Nazi News at February 1945 when they destroyed 11Russian T34/85 in 15 minutes. They took out two heavy IS tanks but was tough. Each took two hits before they took them out between 900-1,100 yards away. They got hit twice in the front which made a big dent and loud gong, but no damage. However, in March a IS took out his Panther with a hit in the side armor from less as 400yards. Only he and two comrades went out of the burning Panther , but his comrades got shoot from MG fire. He survive as prisoner of the Russians and in 1946 the Russians let him walk home, literally. Later he was hired from the Americas to prepare a German/US Tank brigade 1948:49 to fight against the Russians ....

@@ralphhofmeier8840 "best" is a very loaded term. Strategically, Panther was simply a BAD decision. Panzer IX with updated 88 gun was more than adequate to take on T-34s and later Shermans. Panther was substantially more expensive and had numerous defects and in turns prompted allies to update their tanks like T-34-85s and IS heavy tanks. At the end of the day, Panthers made no difference on the battlefield.

I’m an Army veteran & some of the impetuses for me to join beyond wanting to serve our country is that I am a huge history & military history buff. Two of my favorite eras are the Roman Empire & World War 2. The influence that the Wehrmacht had on modern warfare including weaponry & tactics cannot be overstated. E.G. the Sturmgewehr or StG 44 was the first widespread assault rifle which was the grandaddy to the AK-47 & M-16/M-4. The Panthers & Tigers influenced the Leopards & Abrams tanks. Blitzkrieg revolutionaed warfare which we know today as combined arms. Now the German leadership & military industry didn’t “invent” everything as they were influenced by many different countries & individuals such as the English who saw the potential of armor early on. Much of the concepts & weaponry they developed & perfected were from some of the nascent ideas that had yet to be realized, tested or implemented. Nonetheless they invented or revolutionized a lot of the weaponry & tactics that we use today.
Anyway, I was a 19kilo Armored Tanker in the US Army. Most of my career was spent in 4th ID, 3rd Brigade, 1st Battalion 68th Armored Regiment. I was in Charlie Company. At any rate, our battalion commander was LTC Ralf Zimmerman who was a US born 2nd generation German. He was a cool BC, & luckily enough my unit was blessed with awesome commanders & First Sergeants. The Battalion Commander had a model of a Panther on his desk & his father served in the Wehrmacht during WW2. He was a tanker but am unsure of the exact unit - not sure if it was the regular army, the Heer or the Waffen-SS. Funnily enough as the BC, he enjoyed some perqs & he gave his father a ride in an M1A1 on the tank trails behind the motorpools at Fort Carson. I’m sure it was a vlast for the old man who was probably in his late 60’s or so at the time in 1996.
My unit got a special deployment that fall. We did an exchanged program with the 1st Royal Tank Regiment of the British Army who was stationed at Paderborn, Germany at the Sennalager barracks & training grounds. This was the Wehrmacht’s old WW2 panzer kaserne & barrack. It was one of the Wehrmacht’s main panzer training areas & proving grounds. We also got to tour Wewelsburg Castle, which was Himmler’s “Castle Wolfenstein” that was supposed to be the “Camelot” of the SS. This was special training which we were paid for but man, you don’t get to do training like this often. It was a blast & the British tankers trained on our tanks at Ft Carson while we spent about 6 weeks in Germany. The Germans treated us like rock stars in Paderborn & complimented us on how polite & well behaved we wereZ. We did a fare amount of training but given the special circmustances, we were given more that an ample amount of free time. It was an absolute blast. I hope more units get to enjoy such deployments.
By the way Our NCO’s were completely gobsmacked at how well the British NCO’s are taken care of. They had a dinning facility that even US Officers would blush at. Their dinning hall was downright regal & they had a pair of private chefs who prepared gourmet meals. Of course the British Army has a long & stories history, & given it’s much smaller size, it affords them such pomp & circumstance. I mean, the dining facility & food quality cannot be overatated. Our command & NCOs were in complete shock & jealous. This wasn’t a US Military dining facility which produces underrated chow but it’s not even the same ballpark. Funnily enough too the junior enlisted in the British Army enjoys perqs & comforts that wouldn’t even be fathomed here in the US. In the barracks instead if CQ where someone is on formal duty as aomeone must be on hand 24/7 at our front desk, the Brits had a small pub in their barracks which a soldier mans as “duty” to serve pints to soldiers off duty. Some of the differences are mind blowing. The Brits were non too happy with us calling cadence at 0600hrs during our PT as they don’t get up as early either. The US Army is great & frankly our country would arguably benefit if more people experienced it even if only for 2-3 years as it’s a great experience. However, our military is huge & doesn’t enjoy the comforts afforded to the Brits like they enjoy. Man, that was a blast & a rare experience as exchange programs like the one we enjoyed was rather unique. If you ever get the chance don’t hesitate, if at all possible. One of my best friends arrived at the unit basically the day we were flying to Germany so he missed out on the once in a lifetime trip unfortunately & had to stay back at the unit on “Rear Detachment.” Totally sucks. Like most things in life, it’s all about timing.
Peace everyone & try to be kind. Life gives us enough drama so there’s no need to create more for yourself.😉👍🤘

Sure, having the center bogies helps reduce ground pressure, but at a great cost of maintenance time. The double bogey design as used in christie suspension types(such as t-34), and also double bogies in m4 sherman & pretty much every other tank regardless of whether it had track return rollers or not, was & still is the prefered design.

german engineers always think they have to create the best possible solution ....but often it lacks practicallity and simpleness for easy building in large numbers and easy repair .....russians were perfect in taht matter i think .
Today we build perhaps the best cars with the superb technics but are they really the best cars ??? I think not because when it comes to reliabulity, practicallity, warranty time, price, repair costs there are mostly Asia cars on the top ! After over 29 years of AUDI/VW i changed to Korean and wow these things just work like a clockwork every day at every condition and with double warranty time.....indeed they are very good; not so superperfect in finishing or tuning but reliable workhorses which dont need much attention.

kubanskiloewe. Many things become overengineered when the backing behind them is overconfident. Porsche did well with the VW Beetle, the Kubelwagen & Schimmenwagen by keeping them simple...a trend that stuck for decades after the war. Fords & Chevys did well too for a time...but so much tech & dependency on computers & AI are making modern vehicles a nightmare. As nice as new cars may be, i'd rather find something 20 years or older with low mileage on the odometer. I don't trust a car with no direct mechanical link between steering wheel & front axle. Many now are 100% "fly-by-wire". Screw that.

Molotov cocktail scene came from a German training footage on how Panther crews could prevent Russian troops from getting on their tanks. The other footage with the Panther and Sherman firefly was testing the abilities of both tanks in climbing, trench crossing, going through dense forest, wading through deep snow and swampy grounds The Panther came out on top in every test that the Panther was put through. The only obstacle that the Sherman could match with the Panther was the trench crossing.

Most footage appears to be from captured tanks during allied testing. You can see they are really careless when they drive the tank through a dense forest with the gun turned forward which is a recipe for disaster when the gun snags behind a tree. Compare this to actual german footage in comparable situations in which case the gun will be turned backwards to prevent gun/turret damage.

I knew an old guy that was in an AVR crew. He said it wasn’t uncommon to try to recover units while under fire. The tanks would often have burnt crews still inside. It was always a matter of retrieving, accessing, scavenging parts and getting units back in working order. When he talked about his experience, you could see the pain in his face. He did all of this by the time he was 21 y/o. Even as an old man, his memory was sharp and clear recounting his service. I see these videos and now can understand what he was saying to a small degree.

Fw190 was sick. A bit overweight but better armed & armored compared with bf109, british Spitfire was inferior as ground attack plane but perhaps better suited as a dogfighter in later versions. • @pex_the_unalivedrunk6785
      @pex_the_unalivedrunk6785 6 років тому

Aircraft arguments get complicated...besides overall combat performance, combat range, lethality, availability, production cost, radar signature, reliability, & track record, one must also consider ease of operation & safety for ground crews & the aircraft itself....which is why i am biased towards the few planes which had tricyclic landing gear at the time.

Then you had to dismantle the tank, gun out, turret off, tracks off, driving wheels off, interior stripped, to crane out and replace the sealed gearbox,
To do the same on the tough, reliable gearbox on a Sherman, you undid 20 bolts and removed the front transmission covers to reveal the gearbox.
