    My Logitech G25 was broken for quite some time and I wasn't sure what to do. After a few long hours of searching online I figured out what the problem might have been and after I opened up the Logitech G25 I found the problem. There is a little black disc, which is called an optical encoder disc, that usually cracks after regular wear and tear. This part either needs to be fixed or replaced. I tried to fix mine by glueing the crack but I was unsuccessful. I decided to purchase a brass replacement and the logitech works like new!
    Here are some photos of the broken original plastic encoder disc:

    Here are some photos of the new replacement encoder disc, which is made out of brass:

    Just to add a note here that I ordered the brass encoder disk from Thailand last week and have already received it - so I can confirm they are still available in 2021. Many thanks for this video - you saved my G25!

    My G25 has been sitting in a box for over 5 years. With iRacing getting popular, I pulled it out and found this to my dismay. Thank you for the tutorial. I'm going to see if I can use my soldering iron to melt the cracks back together for a temporary fix, I ordered a 60 slot from CM Laser. Thank you for that link as well!

    Thank you man, your two videos really helped me. I managed to fix it without buying the brass encoder. So here is my story if it can help someone:
    The first time i tried to glue the crack, but when I put back the encoder on the motor it cracks again. So the second time I bought a washer. M5 inner diameter. I put the washer, It didn't crack anymore. I assembled everything back and plugged in the wheel. It calibrated but it was slightly off (like 10 degrees). The problem was that the washer was too thick, the encoder wheel was far from the black sensor (make sure your encoder wheel is close to the black sensor but doesn't touch the circuit board) so I dissasembled again and removed the washer. I cut a piece of metal form a cola can. I made it the same dimensions as the washer. I put the new washer on the encoder wheel and I couldn't believe it but this has worked.

      Awesome stuff! Did you make a video tutorial on what exactly you did with the cola can? Or will you make one soon?

    good video man i used it when doing my first encoder, but just a heads up for anyone looking at doing this. you can just pop the plastic cover on the motor off and change the optical encoder as the g27 is seen at the very start of this video. no need to remove circuit boards, plugs (apart from the one in the back of the motor) or the main steering unit with the motors attached. its more fiddly and you have to be more careful but it can be done. i just done it tonight on my 2nd wheel

    How did the plastic encoder wheel crack? In my case the encoder wheel was moving freely on the axle and I managed to glue it and fixed my problem but it wasn't cracked luckily. Thank you for doing this video, you're helping many people out there!

    My wheel was shifting more and more to the side. As it turned out, my disc was indeed cracked exactly like in the video. I then glued it together. It works for now and I hope it will do until the brass disc arrives in 2 weeks.
    Anyway, thank you very much, you helped me a lot!

  • @mikeschmeeedotcom
    @mikeschmeeedotcom  11 років тому +2

    Since you purchased the wheel from eBay and it never worked to begin with, I can't say for sure that nothing else may be broken. However, since you mentioned that you have the same crack on your optical encoder disc then my best guess is to replace the disc and see what happens. I know its a risk spending 37 USD on the brass replacement and it might not even solve the issue but thats what I did when my G25 was broken and it fixed the problem.
    Hope this helps!

    I expect that it's a polyamide (Nylon) disc. If that's the case, it cannot be glued, the low chemical surface energy causes it to reject adhesives.
    When the material comes out of the mould, it's somewhat brittle, and is conditioned for several hours or about a day in humid environment to absorb around 4% of moisture (by weight and by volume approximately the same). It becomes tough and flexible and expands in size a little. Then after it's installed on the shaft, it will lose a little moisture and will hug it tight. It will continue losing moisture, because it sits on a pretty warm shaft on a pretty warm motor, and it will continue shrinking and becoming more brittle. Eventually, the shrinkage forces will cause it to split, as it continues shrinking around the shaft, the forces are immense.
    I tend to repair some mechanisms which share the issue. I repair small polyamide gears by copying them, creating a single-sided mould with silicone putty, and then casting epoxy into it. I usually use Uhu 300 epoxy, and i mix about 10-20% more hardener than binder, to make it more flexible, since in 1:1 epoxies the hardener usually contains plastifier, in this one for sure. Then i hot cure it, i throw it on the bed of my 3D printer at 80°C or before i used to have one, i'd just used a hair drier.
    I don't know whether i'd be able to copy the encoder this way, whether the silicone that i use can actually be encouraged to go into all these little holes and then stay together while the master is removed, or maybe liquid casting silicone needs to be used instead. Nowadays, one could also 3D print a replacement. You can find ready made 3D models on Thingiverse. You can then order the prints in polyamide from Shapeways, or in polyamide or resin from PCBWay or any number of companies - this is all very inexpensive. It also seems barely just about printable on a commodity FDM printer in PLA, won't look great but might just work, or might need a tighter nozzle than standard (0.4mm is standard, but down to 0.2mm are available) but it is doable.
    There appear to be a bunch of guys in China offering 60-slot encoders specifically as "steering wheel encoder for Logitech", not cheap though. These are made from stainless steel. So you aren't limited to a single supplier.

    I just want to confirm that I got my encoder from the same guy within a week (Shipped from Thailand to The Netherlands). I placed my order on June 26, and got it today (July 3, 2013). I should also mention that I used mike's G25 disassemble videos to open up my G27, so hereby Narain's question is also answered with a "Yes". Now ... let's re-assemble the thing! I'll reply the results when I got to test the new encoder .. -fingers crossed-

    1: Close the crack with som fast glue and some pressure. 2: Glue a steel washer on the disc, for enforcement. 3: Clean for glue residue near the small encoder holes.

    The optical encoder for my G27 recently broke and its out of warranty, so I am having to replace it which is why you video is so helpful. But I was wondering does the inside of the g27 look like the inside of the g25 or is it radically different? just want to know before I take it apart

    I honestly don't know if its the same or not. I'm going to assume that it is maybe with an extra wire or two but I really don't know. I recently sold my G25 but hopefully I'll be picking up a G27 when I get some extra funds. I'll open it up and compare.

    You should REALLY include something about the wheel stop (toothed plastic piece) that falls out when you pull the servo motors. I'm the second person I know who this has happened to and I had no idea where to put it. With a little help I eventually figured it out but my buddy gave up and had yo buy a new one. You assumed we were too smart :) GREAT VIDEO THOUGH, saved me 300 bucks and I didn't even need any glue. Mine turned out to just have all four of the mounting screws loose! Thanks!

      Is that the part that connects with the steering column? If so, I think I lightly covered that in Part 2 of this video. I wish I still had my G25 :( I'd open it up and make another video going into further detail on that toothed plastic piece as I get quite a few questions regarding that piece of the G25. Thanks for watching though, it means a lot :) Cheers!

    I watched your video and left a comment. My best guess would be that you have a cracked optical encoder disc but before you start replacing anything, check to see if you have the same issue with another system such as a PS3. That's if you have access to one.

    The light blinks aswell when you have another hardware that interfeares with the nadwith the G25 is running on. In my case my web camera and my headset when on at the same time, makes the g25 act up. So before you complete disasample your G25/G27 Try to remove webcamera´s or headsets and see if its still doing it :)

    Thanks for the video, very helpful. I have a couple questions though. When you remove the old encoder disc and put the new one on, is the shaft/disc keyed and if not how can you be sure the holes are in the right position for the purpose of calibration? Also, if not keyed to the shaft, what's to keep the disc from spinning on the shaft?

    hi thanks for this. my encoder actually looks ok (no cracks at all). The problem i was having was the steering (left and right) wasn't regisering in the game. the only thing working on the steering wheel was the rev light stay on constantly and the paddle shift would work. i too had the blinking light on my shifter which is why i have opened it up and found the encoder disc in good condition. any idea what else could be causing this issue on the steering?

    Thanks for the video! My G27 has recently got an issue when it is plugged in, and does the calibration thing, it makes a fully right turn, a fully left turn, then stays there without coming back the dead center. Is this a rotary encoder issue? Should I be worried?

    Excellent video. I definitely have a cracked wheel. Sigh. Exactly as predicted. I'm about to order a new one.
    Question though as I seem to be missing a tiny piece of info... There's a rectangular piece of plastic with gear teeth and grease in there.... How do I know exactly how to get it back in properly? It seems like it would have to be aligned in some way otherwise the wheel would have limited travel in one direction or the other.
    Thoughts?
    And thanks for the great work. You've done us all a great service here.

      +Bill Griffith Thanks.
      I lined it up as center as possible. It was trial and error for me. Luckily I got it right the third try. I do not know of another way of aligning it perfectly.

    • @bbigpaws
      @bbigpaws 8 років тому +2

      +mikeschmeeedotcom I stared at it for a while and I ended up getting it REALLY close to perfect. Just an FYI...I didn't get the brass part. I took my cracked wheel and found a small nylon washer that was a little too small to fit over the shaft. Then, carefully trimmed the washer with my Dremel too for a nice firm fit. It constricted the cracked wheel back to perfection. A tiny bit of cyanoacrylate to keep it safely in place (it's tight and I'm sure it won't move anyway) and it's been working like a champ. 19 cents to fix.

      Make sure the new optical encoder disc is not touching any of the sensors. It has to be in just the right spot for the wheel to work correctly. Be sure to watch the second part of this video. It's on my UA-cam Channel

  • @pedroluisramalhoalmeida7885

    Great video.Thanks a lot for your help. I also had my encoder plastic disc cracked. I glued it with loctite and the problem persists (software does't recognize the wheel - green light blinking on the shifter - , only recognizes pedals, shifter and all the buttons, including the ones on the steering wheel). Then I noticed that the encoder disc was a bit loose on the 3mm motor shaft. I,ve glued it too. The problem persists.
    I can order one of these brass discs that you refer, but honestly, What difference it will make as my plastic disc is now well glued and tight to the shaft? I wonder if it is not another problem. In your oppinion, what difference can make the brass disc to the original one well repaired and tightened? Do you know any other hardware or software problem that causes this?

    • @mikeschmeeedotcom
      @mikeschmeeedotcom  6 років тому

      Hello, thanks for the comment and compliments.
      I don't know of any other hardware of software issues.
      The brass disc is simply stronger and will not (or atleast should not) crack as you have seen from the plastic disc. That's the only difference I can think of.
      If I had to take a guess I think the plastic disc is just simply not strong enough and overtime its prone to cracking?
      I hope that helps.
      Cheers!

      I'm currently on the same situation I have the same symptoms you guys mention that of the blinking green light on the shifter. I am not sure if the problem will be fixed if I buy this expensive brass encoder however and it's quite a bit of money to try... Is your issue fixed after you replaced the encoder with the brass?

    • @pedroluisramalhoalmeida7885

      I didn't replaced the plastic disc with the brass disc. I found a second hand G25 Wheel and I bought that wheel. But I suppose that If I had replaced the plastic disc by one of those brass discs the problem might have been resolved.

    Mike, tanks so much for sharing this info with us. I suspected mine might have small crack as well (G27) opened it up and it confirmed it. My calibrated slightly of centre as well. What I wanted to ask was if ur force feedback got any weaker because of this? my ffb is much less vs my buddys g27 on the same game with the same settings. Basically what im asking is did this only solve your calibration or did it improve other aspects of the wheel as well. Btw the G27 is exactly the same inside down to ever connector.

    • @mikeschmeeedotcom
      @mikeschmeeedotcom  10 років тому

      Honestly, I cannot remember. I sold the G25 a long time ago as I was in need of some money and I haven't gotten back into the scene just yet. I don't think the force feedback got weaker but like I said, I honestly can't remember. Sorry about that. When I installed the new optical encoder disc, I noticed that the disc has to be in a specific sweet spot in order for everything to function perfectly. I think it has something to do with the slightly larger thickness of the brass disc. Perhaps its weight as well. So maybe it has something to do with the positioning that you currently have it in? I'm not sure. Sorry I couldn't have been of more assistance.

However, now I have a really weird problem.If I have FFB set to on, pressing any key on the wheel or pedals sends the wheel in to a crazy spin. If I set the FFB off, then all the buttons and the wheel work perfectly. I've obviously done something really stupid with the rebuild but I can't see what. Any ideas??

I would add, to make sure you align the geared board fully to the left to ensure it can calibrate properly - and I also had to gently push the encoder disc closer to the black optical reader as it couldn't read it the first time.
      Other than that it works beautifully and I don't need to buy a new wheel now. Thanks so much guys!

      mehdi maybe google search the name/model of your wheel for some fix results - most wheels of this age will use an encoder to translate your turning of the wheel to a unit of measurement that your PC can understand. Hope that helps

      my G27 doesn't steer anymore, all other buttons work, pedals and shifter, the only issue is the steering.
      The shifter light blinks and if I plug the wheel to a different USB, it doesn't detect as G27, it detects as Logitech Driving Force model.
      I checked the encoder and it's cracked indeed (but still in one piece).
      I'm not so sure that issue is causing this problem, can it be that a slight crack can do all this? anyway I tried to glue it, but the issue was not solved.

I started a lap at to test G25 but after a couple of minutes alligment was gone. Tried maybe 20 times so far but alliegment just goes off during the driving. Do you have any advice?. Thank You

      Hello, I'm sorry to hear about your experience. It sounds very annoying, atleast I would be annoyed if I were in your position. The only thing that I can think of is the disc is not set in the right position. I mention in part 2 of this video that the disc has to be aligned a certain way in between the sensors. That would be my best guess without seeing the Logitech unit in person. Other than that, it may be something else that's causing the issue.

      Glue it to the shaft it's probably shifting while you are moving the wheel resulting in it no being aligned

    Hey Mike thank you for your video!
    I have applied the new encoder correctly but now I have a weird problem, the wheel after around 10 minutes shuts off of windows, the green light on the shifter is perfectly lit and it also keeps the last position the pedals were in (if it shuts off in the middle of a straight then it keeps on the gas fully) if I replug it, it works for 10 mins again. Any idea what have I done wrong because this didn't happen before I've took it apart.

    • @GyenesLaci1
      @GyenesLaci1 9 років тому

      +GyenesLaci1 *Update*
      I have unplugged the g27's shifter and it works great no problem with pedals and steering wheel but a new problem was born somehow in someway the brass encoder spins or does something on the metal thing you put it on and it starts steering off center and then the steering dies. It slides off of it's position after a few laps progressively and bam it looses the connection of the wheel.

  • @RuneLokke

    Mike! Thank you!!
    My G25 started drifting off center and thanks to your guide I was quickly able to establish that my disk was indeed cracked.
    Ripping apart a few old ball mice I found a VERY similar disc, that when drilled trough made the wheel usable again.
    Still I am a bit of center with the new disk, It calibrates 100 % but immediately drift off to one side a few degrees when in use...... :(
    Question: Can This be cause by misalignment of the center "cog" plastic piece or do you think my disk is not precise enough?
    I am a bit hesitant to splurge for a Thai metal disk, unless I am sure this will work 100 % as funds are limited...
    Thank you in advance for your thoughts on this!

    • @mikeschmeeedotcom
      @mikeschmeeedotcom  9 років тому +1

      Rune Løkke It could be either or. Start with the centre column or "cog" as you call it and try to get it as perfect as possible. If it's still off a bit then it could be the disc from the old mouse.
      From what I remember, the disc that can be found in an old computer mouse has to have the right amount of holes or slots that perfectly match up with the G25 optical encoder disc. If you look at your optical encoder disc in the G25, you will see tiny holes or slots near the edge. The G25 computer reads those slots in order to calibrate the wheel correctly each time it starts up. So make sure the disc you found in your mouse has identical.
      I guess the last resort would be to purchase the brass optical encoder disc from cmlaserservice in Thailand.

    • @RuneLokke
      @RuneLokke 9 років тому

      mikeschmeeedotcom Thank you for the quick reply; I am going to try to realign the center column first I guess, even though my solution was a bit "ghetto" it did seem to work, as the wheel perfectly centers on boot..
      ..its damn hard to count the holes, but it certainly looks identical when held on top of the (partially broken) old one.
      I guess if this does solve it, ill splurge for the Thai solution.
      Have a great day Mike, and thank you again!

      I'm honestly not too sure if you can grease the gears. I mean, I'm sure you can but I wouldn't. It's not too loud, my room echos a lot. Maybe try it out at a store that has it on display before purchasing? The G25 and G27 are the best wheels that are available, in my opinion.

      mikeschmeeedotcom I finally bought the G25. Not disappointed at all! Its not noisy at all! The videos on UA-cam are so misleading for the G25's noise level! thank you for the reply :) Got a question: do you have any way to make the shifting noise less clicky ? tonytober I'm not sure how to do that. I've only modified the shift stick so it has a heavier feel as it would in an actual vehicle. Just nudged a little bit and I had a flashing light on the shift stick. I opened the G25 up and I noticed that the disc was cracked in three spots so I replaced the disc and now it works again! Well, I can't make a video because I need to dissasemble my G25 again and I am afraid I will break it :D. But this video pretty much explains what I did:
      /watch?v=gnGY0lLnv0A&t=2s.
      But I instead of the washer I put a piece of a cola can or beer can. I just cutted a square from the can with scissors. Then i placed the washer on top of it and i glued it so it doesnt move when I cut around the washer. So I cutted the square and now I have circle the same diameter as the washer. While the two pieces are still glued togheter, I grabbed a screwdriver which had the same inner diameter as the washer. I started twisting it (drilling) it until the inner diameter of metal piece had the same as the washer. Now I have two washers - one thicker and one thinner glued to each other. I seperated them and put the thin washer on the encoder wheel. If it doesn't fit you can try again to enlarge the inner diameter, but don't make it too large because It will be loose. When my homemade washer finally fitted to the encoder wheel, I put a very little amount of glue and then putted back the encoder on the electric motor.

      It's been a while since I played around with the G25, but I remember having a bit some small calibration issues if the rectangular bar that connects to column of the G25 unit does not align perfectly. Maybe it's that? It basically has to be dead center, otherwise the calibration will not work on start up, and the gaming system might not recognize the wheel. That's all I can think of at the moment.

      Make sure the 2 screws that mount the plastic piece (mounted to the back of the motor) that the small circuit board mounts to are tight and make sure the screws are tight on the small circuit board itself. There is a sensor on the back of the small circuit board that reads through the holes as the encoder disc spins and if the screws to the plastic mount or the circuit board are loose they will wiggle around enough to give the wheel an inaccurate reading during calibration. From what i have seen and read while researching the cause of my wheel problems, it seems that the screws coming loose on that plastic mounting piece is as notorious of a problem with these g25/27 as the factory encoder discs breaking, both of which tend to cause the same problem.
