- 1967 - Shirley Bassey recorded and release this song, 'If You Go Away' on her 1967 LP titled, 'And We Were Lovers'. Rod McKuen, who wrote the English Lyrics for this song, said he was very fond of Shirley's version of this song.
ABOUT this song:
"If You Go Away" is an adaptation of the 1959 Jacques Brel song "Ne me quitte pas" with English lyrics by Rod McKuen. Created as part of a larger project to translate Brel's work, "If You Go Away" is considered a pop standard and has been recorded by many artists, including Greta Keller, for whom some say McKuen wrote the lyrics.
Damita Jo reached #10 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #68 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966 for her version of the song. Terry Jacks recorded a version of the song which was released as a single in 1974 and reached #29 on the Adult Contemporary chart, #68 on the Billboard Hot 100, and went to #8 in the UK.
The complex melody is partly derivative of classical music - the poignant "But if you stay..." passage comes from Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6.
A sad but hopeful ballad, the lyrics are told from the perspective of someone telling their lover how much they'd be missed if they left. This is described in vivid, hyperbolic terms, such as "there'll be nothing left in the world to trust". If the lover stays, the narrator promises them both devotion and good times ("I'll make you a day / Like no day has been, or will be again"). Some lines show that the narrator is speaking to the lover as they are already leaving, or considering doing so ("Can I tell you now, as you turn to go..."). The lines "If you go, as I know you will" and later "...as I know you must" make clear that despite the narrator's protests, the lover's leaving is inevitable.
McKuen's translation is significantly different from the original Brel lyric. The English version is based around contrasting what would happen "if you go away" and what could happen "if you stay".
In the original French version, the singer begs for his lover not to leave him and is more supplicant and almost self-humiliating (the title "Ne me quitte pas" translates "Do not leave me"). Significant is the last image of the French version; although the McKuen version has lyrics that come close to the original sentiment, the French lyrics are far bleaker (as is the song in general): "Let me become the shadow of your shadow, the shadow of your hand, the shadow of your dog" (lit. translation of the original) as opposed to "I'd have been the shadow of your shadow if I thought it might have kept me by your side" (English lyrics).
LYRICS:
If you go away, on this summer day
Then you might as well take the sun away
All the birds that flew in the summer sky
When our love was new and our hearts were high
When the day was young and the night was long
And the moon stood still for the night birds' song
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away
But if you stay, I'll make you a day
Like no day has been or will be again
We'll sail the sun, we'll ride on the rain
We'll talk to the trees and worship the wind
Then if you go, I'll understand
Leave me just enough love to hold in my hand
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away
If you go away, as I know you will
You must tell the world to stop turning till
You return again, if you ever do
For what good is love without loving you
Can I tell you now as you turn to go
I'll be dying slowly till the next hello
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away
But if you stay I'll make you a night
Like no night has been or will be again
I'll sail on your smile, I'll ride on your touch
I'll talk to your eyes that I love so much
But if you go I won't cry
Though the good is gone from the word goodbye
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away
If you go away as I know you must
There'll be nothing left in the world to trust
Just an empty room full of empty space
Like the empty look I see on your face
I'd have been the shadow of your dog
If I thought you might have kept me by your side
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away

I was introduced to Shirley Bassey when I still very young by my farther, who had a great passion for music. He passed away a few months ago and I find myself listening more and more to the music he loved so much, I suppose its my own way of feeling a little closer to him.
I am glad he opened my heart and ears to great music like this, with lyrics that tell a story and to a point everyone can relate to.
I'm very sorry to hear about your father. My mom is 88 yo, and I'm greatful that she is still in pretty good health. People who take an unbiased and open listen to the huge discography of Shirley Bassey's recordings and live performances normally become fans. It makes no difference the generation. A great vocalist transcends generations, and Dame Shirley is one of those vocalist/performers. Regards, Scot USA
Exactly the same has happened to me my dad died of covid last year he adored Shirley Bassey. He took me to one of her concerts as a child in the 1970s, even then I was awestruck.
Müziğin evrensel ve ortak dilinde buluşmak neguzel. Shirley sen harikasın.😊👏👏👏

Awesome vocal ... Shirely bassey
Shirley you are one of a kind.
Mon Dieu de bonté et de justice sauver mon âme. Amen.
MASTERPIECE
This song is the "Maradona" of all English language songs. I'm not sure if there is another that tops it; it's the "classic" love song, that is Love in all directions---love of parents, siblings, spouses, children, relatives, clan, society, nation, faith, everything!
First of all it's a french song... a chanson with a text which ist much richer, much more a poem!

Hi Dennis: I really like all the music that Alma Cook wrote for Shirley Bassey in the 1960s and 1970s. Shirley and Alma made a great team. And, with Shirley's exceptional vocal ability, she was able to transform Cooks words and music into something special. Regards, Scot

+wolverine3566 - Thks Wolverine3566...Shirley's ability to see a song and then approach it differently is one of her greatest assets as a vocalist. Then, of course, you have to have the pipes to make it happen. Most everyone knows that Bassey can belt a song to the rafters, but I am hoping that if they take some time to view her huge discograhic recording history on UA-cam, they will also come to appreciate this amazing ability of hers to be able to take a song and add some complexity to it, and then vocalize the song as it views it. Here, Shirley combines soft whispers with some hi-fidelity bars, and she both slows some phrases while speeding up others. She knows how to tell the story, and is capabile of executing it vocally. An amazing talent Dame Shirley is..
Shirley Bassey Music and Vids, you're absolutely right! Every song that she sings sounds as if it's hers own and has its own life.
If I had to choose my top five songs song by Dame Bassey, this song would be on that list. This performance demands that you stop what you're doing and listen because she tells the story so convincingly that you believe she is telling the truth about what she is singing. It is simply amazing how she tears into the very core of your heart with this version. She grips you in her emotional tentacles right down to very last word of the song. I'm not sure if the accompanying musicians were the same after this recording!
If you go away... мне это чувство знакомо.......
But you did I! What should I do of my life?
beautiful cover

Very similliar with the song "May be I,may be you" Scorpions. I think ,they did the plagiarism
You think the Scorpions copied some of the melody from this song? Very interesting. I'll have a listen. thanks,
I really love that song from Scorpions, but you made me think about plagiarism maybe. There are some similarities but in my opinion it's more about the whole vibe of the song and singing becoming "stronger " through the song and emotional aspect that they share. :)

Shirl threw the kitchen sink at this one.
Also the garage door, including the lock & key for good measure.
007 JAMES BOND OPENING
Weak translation , over all that lost the true despair, the bleak point of view...it is almost syrup compare to the original lyrics...the english are good to make syrup of words of despair.... it reflects how much problems they have to express themselves...and their feelings...this song could never have been writen by an english person except Peter Hammill...who can reach such despair..this being said, Shirley is very good...not as much in this song as Nina Simone...but still a giant in this now empty world of true interprets...
❤
