I had to do this a few years ago. Easy enough job, but imagine my bewilderment learning of a filter in the power steering system! Watched the whole video anyways like I do all of them. I love these cars, and I love love love your videos!
Jack up the front of the car with both tires off the ground. Take the return hose off and place collection pan underneath. Engine off, key in position 2, Turn the steering wheel left and right while adding fluid until all the old fluid is pushed out.
for my hyundai azera i learned very late that this forgotten steering fluid reservoir have built in filter! & when it's clogged it causes poor car stability, stiff steering & steering pump noises! i was pulling my hair to figure out the cause unstable steering my car! by the way all you need to drain the fluid is from the return pipe of the reservoir then jack up the car & turning the steering wheel repeatedly both ways (without starting the engine) untill it drained out
If your PS fluid is really dirty you can flush it by attaching a scrap hose to the hose going into right of the reservoir (plug or turn the reservoir connection up so it doesn't leak). Run the hose into a bottle and have a friend start the engine while you add new fluid to the reservoir until the fluid going into the bottle looks fresh. Change the filter and put everything back together. Voila!
Hi there, me again, just wondering if your expert knowledge have any ideas why my carpet behind the driver side RHD is soaking wet. Could it be the heater core leaking or blocked drainage? In what area? Thank you for all the videos and help!
I am not to sure to what extent they changed the evaporator core's drain location for the R?HD cars, but if they mirrored the design then this drain is on the driver's side tranny "tunnel". Remove the carpeted panel in that area. The "hose" is a very brittle foam like thing that turns to dust if you touch it. Chances are that this is your primary cause of the leak. Another one can be a plugged sunroof drain. There should be water marks though coming down the A column once you have removed all the under dash coverings. The last area can unfortunately be the windshield gasket. Start with the easy to get to parts and work yourself up to the more challenging items. Good luck.
There is one in the works about fixing one that leaks oil. Rebuilding the steering box is not a trivial undertaking, but the next one will need to be disassembled then I may be able to also put a video together for everyone.
You are correct. Totally depends on the condition of the fluid. If it is burned and totally unusable then the best thing to do is to try draining the fluid at the steering box. But you would also have to drain the cooler loop separately as that oil is unlikely coming out there.
I havnt changed mine since I got my 420 sel 89 I had it 3-5 years have the eha for get the word but I’ll dial her in a q turn at a time to match up but thank you you have been the most helpful ch on UA-cam for my 126 bless you bro
It all depends on usage. With a daily driver I would change oil and filter every other year. If the car has been sitting for a while I would change to make it road worthy,.
Good luck with the EHA. It is best to get a KE Jetronic pressure test kit. They are fairly cheap and take the guess work out of the adjustment. Good luck.
Ideally all fluid is drained and that can be achieved removing the plug on the steering box. I use this shortcut because neither lines nor the box have a lot of oil in them.
I became mechanical by watching your videos thanks for the knowledge now I fixed my car's by myself ❤️
That is awesome!

Thank you! Good luck to you and keep your classic Benz on the road.

Nice tip. Thx
Thanks for the video, beautiful and detailed shown!
Thanks. Glad you liked it.
Very help full videos going through all you videos 👍
Glad this is helping you.
great videos as always thank u Ralph!
Thank you!
Great tip !! I need to change the fluid in mine come to think of it. 😁
Good luck. Fortunately this is fairly straight forward.

That is a lot of work, huh? Glad you figured it out though.
Keep these videos coming.
We will give it a try.

Hello I was wondering if you had a video on how to replace a power steering gear box on a 87 w126 420 sel
Or a video on how to rebuild one thank you

@@conradtonsul7343 Thanks for your suggestions!
Do you ever get squealing from this pump? I have older belts on my car so I assume it's them but not sure if it's the pump itself
Assuming that your oil level is ok there should not be any unusual noise coming from the pump itself.
You have only drained the reservoir. There is a drain bolt on the steering box.

What fluid are you using?
I have been using Prestone Power Steering Fluid
I have a W201, would it be okay to use ATF Dexron as well?
@@victor90101 it has been awhile, but I remember using ATF on our 560SL.
@@brentkhack6404 Thank u

Was that a replacement for the power steering fluid in the reservoir only? What about the lines?
