My first time transcribing the legend Herbie Hancock~ sheet music trivia (first to answer correctly gets PDF) which scale is being outlined in measure 81?
It's Gb whole-tone. (I would probably class it rather as C whole-tone so it implies the V of Fm7.) Btw: the first left-hand voicing is supposed to have Bb (not B natural). Amazing transcription - one of my favourites! :)
I was there the night of that solo. At the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, in awe of Hancock, Metheny, Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland. There's video of the whole concert. I remember hearing this solo and thinking how Herbie made it seem like child's play, effortlessly taking his lines up and down, punctuating beats with Jack...just flying over the band and the structure of the tune he wrote decades before. And experiencing these 4 giants and their obvious appreciation of each other. A concert like no other. Thanks for this, and other great transcriptions!
With some of your transcriptions, I feel like I can take the ideas and add them to my own improv. But with Herbie here? I can't even dream of incorporating a fraction of this, because I don't have the skills to even come close to playing this, much less doing it with improv. What a legend!
I feel like my mind just walked out on me, from all the amazing stuff that Herbie has going on here. If I were to play it exactly how you notated it, it would have taken me weeks of practice. Also, I love how many repeated notes there are here (one of my favorite thing to play while I improvise).
@@Mathemarius Well, I guess it depends on a person. As for me, my trusted and tried method for repeated notes is alternating between fingers (I find it most comfortable to play with a thumb, index and the middle one).
Measure 42 @01:28.....What the h...?!?!? How am I supposed to even ever play that?!?! I can barely "hear" it!! Further more, there should be some type of warning before unleashing Hancock like that.....wow.

Whole tone scale?
I'm not entirely sure if I can say that Gb is its root, bcs the scale itself is symmetrical

Most of that measure is a hole tone scale, which fit well with the alterered chords that are just moved up a step.
Hexatonic, or whole tone scale, also is a symmetric scale. In this case, starting from Gb.
@Mr. Waa You were the first and yes it is the whole tone- congrats! Shoot me a message @timothygondola.com/contact

Herbie isn't afraid to slam 32nd or 64th notes on a single note, and its always incredible the amount of notes he can pour out with a single finger.

Timothy- you are a GENUIS
Reminds me of Kapustin 😁
I'd be shocked if Kapustin wasn't influenced by Herbie in any way! The 4th piano concerto in particular comes to mind
Your transcriptions are amazing! Keep it up!
