Rick Steamboat was without a doubt one of the greatest babyfaces in the history of the wrestling business. He was definitely at the top of his game around 1984.

Steamboat got it in 89, showed Vince what a match was at Wrestlemania 3, and Pistol a black pioneer in amateur wrestling. Both were state champs.

man! I was 16 back in '84 and watched World Wide Wrestling on WLOS-TV out of Asheville, NC every week and I don't remember Rick Steamboat ever having a beard!

@hbk2hhh No he'd return to the territory that had his contract. For example, Harley Race was based out of the Missouri territory and once he lost the title he'd basically stay in Missouri but still occassionally travel for rematches or other special matches. They all had contracts with their home promotions, which also acted as booking agents for them to work outside their territories and they were all part of the NWA as well so they had two different ways of outsourcing their top guys.

Pretty sure Midsouth just had the North American (later UWF) title and then the TV title (which for a long time was a medal and not a belt!). They also had like the Mississippi title which was unusual. World Class had the American (later WCCW) title and the Texas Title was behind that and I do think they also had a TV title to go with the Tag Belts and the Six Man Titles. That's a lot of titles.

@Piledriver86 #3 was the various regional champions. The National Title, American and North American Title were all supposed to put the two Atlanta promotions and World Class on par with Crockett in terms of having a major world title contender but those were also considered regional titles.

@Netriderceo So basically, holding a territorys top title, like World Class's American Heavyweight Title, or Mid Souths Mid Atlantic Title made you that promotions top challenger for the World title when the champion came to that region?

Usually the Florida heavyweight champion was first in line for a shot at the nwa title and around 84 that started to change to the U.S. Champion.

Which was the third-ranked title? The tag team titles? The TV title? The National title? Or one of the regional titles, like the Mid Atantic Heavyweight title?

@Netriderceo so does that mean when the main nwa champion is traveling and loses the title in say georgia championship does that mean hes stuck in that promotion from now on and who ever won the title travels??

@Netriderceo thanks i always wondered how that worked its good to hgear about old wrestling

@Piledriver86 Basically yes. Mid-South had the North American Title as well as the Mid-South Title being the #2 contender. Mid-Atlantic had the US Title and the Mid-Atlantic Title being the #2 contender in that territory. Georgia Championship had the National Title and then the Georgia Heavyweight Title. As far as I know, the other territories only had one regional title and then a TV title of some sort. Those TV titles were defended on ever wrestling show a territory had on every week.

@OrigLanceR He said that, didn't he? Was this '84 or '48? I'm surprised he didn't threaten to bust him up like a shiffarobe.

The nwa used Ricky steamboats talent so much better than the WWF , I'll never forget how Vince McMahon dressed Ricky up in that stupid dragon outfit made a complete ass out of him.
