All opinions are my own, 100% honest. Some of the links in this description are affiliate links. I'll earn a small commission if you make a purchase and it's no additional cost to you, I appreciate your support!
The only issue I have with bikes in this category are the rear axle. In this day and age, no serious mtb in my opinion should come with these skinny , quick release dropout axles. Especially a bike like this, that would be a great platform for upgrades.
Exactly my thoughts as well, 5x135 QR rear in 2023 is an absolute showstopper. Also, why fitting super budget material RT10 rotors in inadequate 160 mm size? Better steel rotors (accepting metal pads) in useful 180 mm size only cost single digit $ more, but actually works.
Exactly, there is no reason for any MTB to come without thru axles. Also, unless you are well over 6ft tall, there is no reason for 175mm cranks
Well, thru axles are definitely better. But back in the day, even dh bikes came with qr and it worked. So I guess it is not that bad. Only thing that sucks is when you remove your wheel and need to readjust the brake after that.
Agree with you on that. But TBH previous beater bike my son used was QR F and rear, and he did ride all over with it including the World Cup circuit in Mt Saint Anne. Ok he was younger/ lighter but still the QR did not hold him back. Boost front provides the stiffer wheel thiugh for more precise steering
I have zero trust issues in the QR axle, they have served many a MTB rider well for many years. The main issue is the industry has clearly moved on, and the thru axle is, and should be, the standard. If you want to upgrade wheels in the future, your choices will be heavily favoured to thru axles.
Fantastic review, it helped me decide this would be a good purchase for me. When I picked it up today it was 40% off, plus I was able to stack an additional 15%, so just over 900$ cad before tax. Paint job is different, but as an added bonus the drop seat is fully set up and wired. All else, same as your review.
That's an amazing deal! Enjoy!
Great in depth review as always. Looks like a decent bike esp. for the money. Diamond Back was a leading brand back in the day. I bought an Apex in 1989. Paid 589.00 for it which was a princely sum to spend getting into this relatively new sport. Only the DB Axis was higher within the line. The bike came with full Shimao Deore everything. For anyone that thinks the old cantilever brake couldn't put you OTB with a good squeeze, you're wrong. Don't ask me how I know. Full rigid steel, because that's all there was, with a straight fork. You got pounded when you rode but I think it helped you become a better rider. We had dropper posts back then they were called "Hite Rite" so it wasn't all primitive lol . Tioga Farmer Johns Cousin up front, and Tioga Farmer John "the Tractor Tire" as it was called in the rear.Color was Smoke Lilac and looked really good. Had the woods all to ourselves back then. My buddy bought an 89 Mongoose Iboc Pro back when Mongoose still made a respectable bike.
Wow 🤩 thanks for sharing! And happy trails!
I still own and regularly ride my 2017 Mission II although it has been heavily upgraded with a 12 speed, 4 piston brakes and a complete suspension change and a newly built set of wheels with Hope Pro 4 hubs. It handles and rides as good as anything I have ridden although it is a bit heavy, but I am not a weight weenie.
Same here, a bit heavy but with a couple of small upgrades it can be a perfect hardtail. Beater bike for us😉
Awesome review thx!!! Just stick on some studded tires and you would have a great bike for the Canadian winters.Cheers!!!!
Kind of our plan 😎
I love enduro hardtails. Have recently had a Dartmoor Hornet. An enduro hardtail with a steering angle of 64 degrees and 27.5 wheels is a shreddin' machine. My bike buddy had Diamondback Mission 2c. Great bike as well. A Diamondback Hardtail is definitely not a bad thing.
Thanks for sharing 🤘
Great review as always. This bike is nicely spec’d with SLX components if the the rear hub was a through axle would amazing at this price point, but I would look at Giant or Trek first.
Agree on both counts. But if you look at the price and specs, both, both TREk and Giant would kind of struggle. Look at Marlin for instance
Really impressive components for that price point 👌 not a bad looking bike either
Yup 💯
At that price you could get a Norco fluid ht 2. Dropper boost through axles.
Thats a great deal for the price. My first mountain bike cost close to the same price and i had to put about $600 into it to make it comparable.
2020 GT Avalanche .
Oh wow!
my dream mountain bike
It is pretty capable🤘
I wish I have a bike like that 😁😁😁
One of my bikes is a budget hardtail like that and honestly to do cross country I’m fast with the budget hardtail bike than with my expensive trail bike
Yeah a dropper, good pedals and tubeless can transform it in a very capable bike
@@LoveMTB I did that upgrades. Crank brothers dropper and Maxxis Ikon tubeless. The only thing that I feel difference is the levers. I still have 2 fingers levers and I’m used to 1 finger short levers
Man, your son is getting big! What do you feed them there in Canada? 😅
Yeah no kidding! He eats everything so we’re lucky 😎
This looks like a great ride - would you have a weight for it as well?
It’s 14-ish kg took a pic but can’t find it now
The groupset is very surprising!
💯surprising when it comes to parts, especially drivetrain
Ye like it but I have Trek Rosco 7 with good geo n components also with a little more spend can upgrade to even better
SAme category of bike and better deal on this one though?
I apologize if I missed it, but did you weigh the bike? A lot of us old timers have our original hardtail (I have a Klein Pinnacle), and it would be interesting to compare the weight of the Diamond Back, to my $1495 (1982 dollar year) Klein. Thank you for the clip.
Hi there I missed the opportunity to put it in the video, it is a bit over 14kg as is, pedals included. Very easy to drop some weight with tubeless but I would put it back by adding a dropper
@@LoveMTB Most excellent, thanks.
Buen video ,saludos de México Cancún, está muy bonita la bici mándame una jeje broma saludos
Kelsooo!!!! my playground.
Oh yeah 💯
Hmmm, might buy this bike and take off the SLX to upgrade another bike. Then downgrading this to Sram NX for my kid who will out grow this bike by next year anyways.
Yup not a bad idea😉
Slx crankset please!!😆😆
Can easily upgrade!🙂
Man this bike was looking great, but lost me at the QR at the rear...
Guess if they made it thru axle it wouldn’t be the the 1k bike category??
For some reason my reply isn't showing, so if there's three replies I apologize. The Cannondale Habit HT 3 sits in the low 1k with thru axle category.
@@williamyoung9501 good point
Better specs than anything cannondale would offer in that price range
And not just Cannondale, even Giant or Trek with their redesigned Marlin
The rear spacing makes this a no go!
For the price though…
Great bike for someone who is getting into mountain biking. Of course the people that are complain about certain specs are just bike snobs.
I would actually by this for green and possibly blue trail and for general riding, which is what is the purpose of this bike.
After watching your video. Sadly, this bike is currently out of stock or I would have bought it. I'd buy it off you if you don't have to send it back to sport Chek.
Thanks for the offer! Looks like my son is going to ride it for a while as his beater bike. He like the geo/ and the way the bike behaved overall, totally unexpected
No snobbery at all, it's called knowledge. A bike is it's frame and it has 4 corners, this frame got 1 out of 4 corners very wrong during construction. Nothing you can change or upgrade further down the line. QR will make this bike more expensive to own having to seek out more expensive non-standard components (wheelsets, hubs, non-boost spacing cranks/chainrings) during the bikes expected service life, eventually leading to the frame being retired/wasted earlier then necessary. How can a rabbit hole of bad investments be "great for someone who is getting into mountain biking"?
What the seat like is it comfortable?
I would stay away from any of these bikes, if you want to buy a bike to do trails and some cross country, I would research a bit more. IMO the whole statement, it is a good beginner bike, is a bit misunderstood. On one hand you will out grow bad geometry and really crap components pretty fast and two, there are much better values bikes out there.
I purchased a Diamondback and it is uncomfortable to ride, it doesn't know what it is. Too long and low to be for light trails, and the knobby tires are not appropriate for pavement riding and the front fork got destroyed going over some stones. Norco, Devinci and Rocky Mountain have way better options and cheaper
Yes and no, this is a bit of an exception in their line.
